M.N.: This piece looks more like the anti-tank missile: it is relatively short and thick, 1,5 to 2m, rather than SA-15, which is 5m long, or the shoulder held ones, which are relatively thin.
This one looks short and thick, and our friends specialize in taking the proper measures of men, and in cutting them down to their proper sizes, too. Almozt like their implied ancient Egyptian forebears. Zo, you can trust these specialists with their system of measurements, and with their proper or improper frames of references, und zi processes and practices of their framings. Or can you?!
Their ARROGANCE is immense, incredible, condescending, playful, seductive, pseudo-humorous, while in fact, of the suppressed and condensed for centuries rage, and specifically and unmistakably Jewish, whatever is commonly understood by this word; and without any doubts - CRIMINAL, und we all know, what ziz meanz.
This piece could be launched from a moving track or a car, and not necessarily from the stationary launcher in the Iranian Parandak military base.

Watch the Song 'Awara' from Hindi movie 'Dabangg 3' starring Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Arbaaz ...M.N.: I would like to express my deepest apologies and regrets regarding my apparent incorrect assessment of this accident and also regarding the expression of the lack of trust in the Western Intelligence agencies (those of the US, Canada, UK, and Australia), which shared their impressions regarding the unintentional Iranian involvement in it, and also to express my deep regrets and apologies regarding my specific suspicions of the Israelis and the Russians in this episode, whose roles in this affair, nevertheless, would benefit from some further clarifications: it is important not only to identify those who pulled the trigger, but also those who might have been, hypothetically, behind them.

"President Hassan Rouhani, in a message on Twitter, said, “Armed Forces’ internal investigation has concluded that regrettably missiles fired due to human error caused the horrific crash of the Ukrainian plane & death of 176 innocent people. Investigations continue to identify & prosecute this great tragedy & unforgivable mistake."
M.N.: Please, present the proofs, that missiles caused the crash.
__________________________________________
In addition to this, and as I discussed in my previous posts, the fact of firing the missile is not by itself the proof, that they downed the plane; and the cause and effect link has to be clearly established. So far there is no evidence of this link, and the data are in contradiction to this explanation.
If some type of the deal was reached on the purely "arithmetical" economic basis: admission of guilt and compensations in exchange for cancelling the sanctions, this type of the deal, and the pressures behind it, would only intensify those suspicions of the Israeli and Russian involvement, and not allay them.
This hypothetical deal would be an indication, that the suspected parties, Israel and Russia , are willing to settle with Iran, with US acting as the intermediary, so that their involvement as the actual cause of the crash would not be revealed, and to avoid the global scandal and the criminal responsibility. In effect, it would be the cover-up, their favorite political tool, and it would be no less criminal, than the original crime.
I think, that Iranian admission of their part of the responsibility is very good and healthy attitude and the sign, and this should be noted and appreciated. I hope, that the available evidence will be released now or soon, so that the reassessment could be performed. I also think, that the issue of the potential use of the new Laser Weapons, including their hypothetical use against the civilian aircraft, remains valid and should be the subject of clarifications and discussions. The questions, including those regarding the specifics of the assessment, do remain, and hopefully, they will be answered, at least partially, when more evidence and more related information are released.
Overall, it is a good development: revealing the truth always is, and I readily call myself the incompetent fool in this and possibly the other matters; and the discomfort of this "mea culpa" is soothed only by the fact of the resolution of this situation, and hopefully, by the positive future developments in the US - Iran relations. I will try to stay abreast of these issues and to address them in my posts.

Iran Says It Unintentionally Shot Down Ukrainian Airliner
Suspicions that an Iranian missile had brought down the plane were raised immediately after the crash Wednesday morning — just hours after Iran fired missiles at two bases in Iraq housing American forces.
The Iranians asked the National Transportation Safety Board to help with the investigation, and the State Department granted waivers to allow the American agency to help. A senior administration official said Friday that he thought the Iranians wanted American investigators there to keep up the appearance that they did not know what had caused the crash.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss these matters publicly, said the Iranian military had poor command and control, and that this was reflected in what had happened with the airplane. Communications among officials and between units are often lacking, he said, and confusion can be the norm. Western analysts often overestimate the capability of parts of the Iranian military, he said.
State television in Iran aired footage that it said showed two black boxes recovered from the crash site. Processing their data could take more than a month, and the investigation could take up to two years, Hassan Rezaeifar, the head of the Iranian investigation team, said Friday.
Official Iranian news media had cited technical problems as the cause in the hours after the crash. Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization chief, Ali Abedzadeh, doubled down on that assessment on Friday, saying nothing could be determined until the data from the black boxes was analyzed, and he characterized statements made by other nations as politically motivated.
The military announcement came as something of a surprise. As late as Friday night, officials were weighing whether to blame faulty jet equipment in acknowledging that Iranian missiles brought down the jet, according to four Iranians familiar with the deliberations.
Until Saturday, Ukraine’s main intelligence agency, known as the S.B.U., said only that it had narrowed the cause of the crash to a missile strike or a terrorist act and that it could not confirm Western intelligence that an Iranian missile system was likely to blame.

Russian, U.S. defense chiefs discuss Middle East crisis - Xinhua
MOSCOW, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu discussed the situation in the Middle East with U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper during a phone conversation, the Russian Defense Ministry said Friday.
"The situation in the Middle East region was discussed," the ministry said in a statement.
Tensions soared in the Middle East after a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad International Airport on Jan. 3 killed Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani, former commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.
Iran fired missiles on Wednesday in retaliation, striking military bases which house U.S. troops in Iraq's western province of Anbar.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted afterwards that "we do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression."
U.S. President Donald Trump said that no U.S. casualties resulted from Iran's missile attack, adding that the United States would impose additional sanctions against Tehran.

Ukraine Airlines plane 'was shot down by Iranian anti-aircraft missile'
President Donald Trump has said he has serious doubts the Ukrainian plane crash in Iran was caused by mechanical failure and he believes 'somebody made a mistake' after Pentagon officials said the jet was shot down.
US intelligence officials believe the Ukrainian Airlines flight which crashed in Tehran killing 176 people on Wednesday was blasted out of the sky by an Iranian anti-aircraft missile system.
Officials are 'confident' that Iran shot down the Boeing 737-800 jet after detecting a radar system being turned on before two missiles were launched, shortly before an explosion believed to have come from the jet, CBS reports.
Two Pentagon officials added that the missiles were likely launched in error by Iranian anti-aircraft crews awaiting a US response to Iran's rocket strikes against American bases in Iraq hours earlier, according to Newsweek.
Trump said Thursday that he has his suspicions about the attack, telling reporters at the White House: 'It was flying in a pretty rough neighborhood. Somebody could have made a mistake. I have a feeling that something very terrible happened, very devastating.'
The plane, a Boeing 737-800 en route from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport to Kyiv's Boryspil International Airport, encountered a problem moments after takeoff in the early hours of Wednesday.
Video showed the aircraft in flames in the air before coming down and exploding a short distance from the city.
If true, the incident would be hugely embarrassing for Iran which had sought to avoid killing anybody in Wednesday's strikes. Eighty-two of the plane's passengers were Iranians.
It could also spark fresh tensions in the Middle East just a day after Trump said Iran seemed to be 'standing down'., as the plane was also carrying 63 Canadians, three Britons, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans and three Germans.

US intelligence is 'confident' that Ukraine Airlines Flight 752 which crashed just outside Tehran on Wednesday morning was shot down by Iranian anti-aircraft batteries (pictured, missile wreckage reportedly found near the scene)
Questions were first raised when pictures of the plane debris appeared to show shrapnel holes in the fuselage. US officials now say they detected two missile launches just before an explosion, believed to have come from the jet
If true the news would be hugely embarrassing to Iran - which had 82 citizens on board the plane - and threaten to reignite tensions in the Middle East just a day after Trump said the regime was 'standing down'

Witnesses said they heard 'two very loud noises' coming from Parandak garrison moments before the Ukrainian airline crashed in farmland just after take off from Imam Khomeini International Airport. A section of rocket was said to have been found in front of a home in the city of Parand
The US intelligence officials spoke out as Ukraine confirmed it is sending missile analysts to the site to investigate.
UK officials also confirmed they are looking into 'very concerning' reports that the airliner was shot down by a missile.
Iranian investigators have insisted that the crash was an 'accident', but have refused to hand over the black box recorded to international investigators.
Some Iranian reports have claimed the black boxes were damaged, and parts of the recordings lost.
The head of Iran's Civil Aviation Organization, Ali Abedzadeh, was quick to reject any suggestion that the plane was shot down as 'scientifically impossible', insisting that its missiles were not capable of reaching that altitude.
New footage captured the moment a burning Ukrainian passenger jet exploded into pieces yesterday - as Iran said the plane was trying to turn back after a technical fault but Ukraine sent missile specialists to inspect the wreckage.
The CCTV footage shows the burning jet plane lighting up a dark street as it approaches before it explodes in a huge fireball.
The explosion sends flaming debris from the Boeing 737 flying in all directions.
Iranian television broadcast the footage today, while a separate 28-second clip taken from the front seat of a car appeared to confirm that the plane was already ablaze when it dropped out of the sky from 8,000 feet.

Iran says the plane had suffered a technical fault, caught fire and started to head back to Tehran, but the crew did not make a radio call to raise the alarm.
Nonetheless, Ukraine is continuing to probe a possible shoot-down and has sent a team of missile specialists to Iran to examine whether a Russian-made weapon could have brought down the plane.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday vowed to find the 'truth' as he declared a day of national mourning after the crash.
The crash came just hours after Iran fired missiles at US bases in revenge for the death of Qassem Soleimani, sparking fresh fears in the tense Middle East.
Witnesses on the ground and on board a nearby aircraft saw a fire 'growing in intensity' before the Ukrainian International Airlines jet came down, they say.
'The plane, which was initially headed west to leave the airport zone, turned right following a problem and was headed back to the airport at the moment of the crash,' the Iranian Civil Aviation Organization says.
'The plane disappeared from radar screens the moment it reached 8,000 feet. The pilot sent no radio message about the unusual circumstances.
'According to eyewitnesses, a fire was seen on board the plane which grew in intensity.'
Iranian investigators have not said what kind of technical fault, such as a mechanical failure or defective part, could have caused the plane to catch fire.
The agency said it had questioned witnesses on the ground and on board a second aircraft which was flying above the Boeing 737.
Issuing an initial report within 24 hours is rare and it can take months to fully determine the cause of an air disaster.
Last night a Canadian security source said Western intelligence agencies did not believe the plane was shot down, easing fears of a missile strike.
Security sources also say there was evidence that one of the engines has overheated.

Despite the claims of technical failure, Ukraine is sending missile specialists to examine the wreckage of the Boeing jet.
Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine's Security Council, told Ukrainian media that a missile strike was one of the 'main theories' along with a collision, an engine explosion or terrorism.
A special commission of experts sent to Tehran includes specialists who found evidence that a Russian weapon had brought down MH17 over Ukraine in 2014.
The team of 45 experts want to examine whether a Russian-made Tor missile could have shot down the Ukrainian International Airlines plane on Wednesday.
The specialists are awaiting permission from Iranian authorities to examine the crash site and look for missile fragments, Danilov said.
They will also seek to identify the Ukrainian victims with a view to repatriating their remains.
Russia delivered 29 Tor-M1s to Iran in 2007 as part of a $700million dollar contract signed in December 2005, and Iran has displayed them in military parades.
Danilov also referred to images which circulated last night showing what appeared to be the charred remnants of a rocket.
The images were unverified and could be a hoax, but Danilov said the 'information [which] has surfaced on the internet' had bolstered the missile strike theory.

Video footage appeared to show the Ukrainian plane already ablaze as it fell from the sky before crashing
British consulting firm IHS Markit released a report Thursday morning which said the plane was 'likely to have been shot down mistakenly' by Iranian forces.
Calling the missile pictures 'credible', the group suggested that the revolutionary guards could have mistaken a civilian airliner for a US military aircraft.
They added: 'Publicly available flight data for UIA Flight 752 is not consistent with the [Iranian] claim that the airliner was attempting to return to the airport.
'The aircraft's pilots made no distress call, and the flight data shows a normal ascent up to the point where it disappears suddenly at 8,000ft. This is consistent with a catastrophic incident on board the aircraft.'
A technical fault would heap further pressure on Boeing, which was thrown into crisis last year after two deadly crashes in five months killed 346 people.
The 737 was less than four years old and had been checked just two days earlier, with 'one of our best crews' manning the aircraft, the Ukrainian airline said.
Yesterday Boeing declared the air disaster a 'tragic event' and offered its 'heartfelt thoughts' to the 176 passengers and crew on board the plane.
'We are ready to assist in any way needed,' the airline said in a statement.
The doomed jet was a Boeing 737-800 - a very common single-aisle, twin-engine jetliner used for short to medium-range flights. Thousands of the planes are used by airlines around the world.
Introduced in the late 1990s, it is an older model than the Boeing 737 MAX, which has been grounded for nearly 10 months following the two deadly crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia.
According to flight tracking data from FlightRadar24, the jet which crashed yesterday reached an altitude of 7,925ft before tracking suddenly ended after three minutes.
It slammed into farmland at Khalaj Abad, in Shahriar county, about 30 miles north-west of the airport, Iranian state media said.

The plane had been delayed from taking off from Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran by almost an hour.
Video footage appeared to show the plane already burning before it fell out of the night sky, while the fuselage was peppered with holes at the crash site.
Authorities in Tehran are refusing to say if they will hand over the black box recorders on board the plane to outside investigators.
According to aviation experts, only a handful of countries are capable of analyzing black boxes - notably the United States, Britain, France and Germany.
However, Iran has indicated it will not hand the flight recorders to Boeing or the US, with which it has not had diplomatic relations for four decades.
French jet engine manufacturer CFM said any speculation about a technical failure was 'premature', while the Ukrainian embassy in Iran initially ruled out a missile strike but later backtracked.
The black boxes (pictured) from the Ukrainian airliner were found today but Iran says it will not hand them over to Boeing
Aviation experts were at odds as they struggled to explain the disaster, with some saying a shoot-down was unlikely while others said an MH17-style event should be the starting assumption.
'The plane was in working order,' company president Yevgeniy Dykhne told a briefing in Kiev where he choked back tears. 'It was one of our best planes with a wonderful crew.'
UIA Vice President Igor Sosnovskiy likewise said chances of a crew error were 'minimal'.
Dozens of people gathered in the departure hall at Boryspil airport outside Kiev to pay their respects to the crew, five men and four women.
A series of airlines have announced they will stop flying over Iranian airspace amid fears for Middle East security.
Just hours before the crash, the US Federal Aviation Administration had banned US airlines from flying over Iran, Iraq and the waters of the Persian Gulf due to the Middle East crisis.
Search-and-rescue teams yesterday combed through the smoking wreckage of the flight to Kiev, but officials said there was no hope of finding survivors.
Body bags were lined up on the ground, and the passengers' personal items - including luggage, clothes, a Santa Claus doll and a boxing glove - were scattered in the debris.
The Ukrainian foreign ministry revealed there were 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians and three Britons on flight PS752, along with 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans and four Germans.
The three British victims were later named as businessman Mohammad Reza Kadkhoda-Zadeh, 40, and engineers Saeed Tahmasebi Khademsadi, 35, and Sam Zokaei, 42.

Canada is home to a large Iranian diaspora community and UIA offers discount flights between Tehran and Toronto, with a transit in Kiev.
Justin Trudeau later vowed to 'ensure that this crash is thoroughly investigated, and that Canadians' questions are answered'. The US promised 'complete co-operation' with the probe.
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei offered his 'sincere condolences' to the bereaved families.
Aviation experts were divided in their assessments of the crash yesterday.
Stephen Wright, a professor of aircraft systems at Tampere University in Finland: 'There is a lot of speculation at the moment it has been shot down - I think that is not going to be the case at all.
'Planes fly the same routes day in, day out,' he said. 'You don't tend to put... missiles next to international airways for obvious reasons.'
He added: 'It could be a bomb or it could be some sort of catastrophic breakup of the aircraft.'
Against that, one aviation risk group said the first assumption should be that it was a 'shootdown event' like MH17 which was brought down by a suspected Russian missile over Ukraine in 2014.
Rescue workers in protective suits gather up the bodies of passengers who were killed in the Boeing 737 crash in Iran
A statement from OPS suggested there were 'obvious projectile holes in the fuselage and a wing section'.
'Whether that projectile was an engine part, or a missile fragment is still conjecture,' the group said.
'We would recommend the starting assumption to be that this was a shootdown event, similar to MH17 – until there is clear evidence to the contrary.'
Meanwhile, a former pilot and head of flight operations at Britain's Civil Aviation Authority cast doubt on the theory that a mechanical failure was to blame for the crash.
Captain Mike Vivian told Sky News that the Ukrainian Airlines crash was a 'puzzling accident'.
The Boeing aircraft was less than four years old and there was no sign of bad weather or pilot error, making it a 'difficult accident to explain', he said.
'It is a puzzling accident because the normal culprits like weather, like maintenance, like old aircraft or like possibly crew training - I don't believe they're present in this case,' he said.
'Obviously in this case they'll be trying to work out whether it broke up mid-air as indeed it appears to have done or whether it broke up when it hit the ground.
'They'll be looking for evidence of mechanical failure, although I find it difficult, troubling to suggest that engine failure may have caused this.
'Even with a double engine failure, these aircraft are capable of gliding - not far, but they can glide - so I find it very difficult to understand that.'

10:25 AM 1/10/2020 - I think, that this second video shows the completely different event; namely the filming of the hit of some object which might be the shoulder held missile with, possibly the laser gun beam, or another shoulder held missile. - M.N.
This second video, which claims to be the filming of the Ukranian plane downing, has emerged, and it is very different from the first one, shown in the MSNBC interview with Mr. Gazetti. In fact, I think, that this second video shows the completely different event; namely the filming of the hit of some object which might be the shoulder held missile with, possibly the laser gun beam, or another shoulder held missile. The debris of these types of the missiles were found on the ground in some proximity to the plane's debris. I think, this second video possibly confirms my hypothesis that these missiles were fired as the cover, to confuse and to mislead the investigators, which they, as a matter of fact, did so quite promptly: even my beloved BBC got mislead and confused in combining these two, apparently unrelated videos in the single one in their report, repeating the erroneous, from my point of view, assertions, that the downing of the Ukrainian plane is the "honest mistake", and the responsibility of Iran. "Iran" - whom: government, private players, some mysterious groups?
But the main problem with that BBC report was the practical absence of the critical analysis and the correct assessment. I would recommend the media to refrain from this erroneous and incorrect evaluations and reviews. Another interesting question is: was this erroneous report issued on purpose: to form a certain desired opinion, or was it the honest lack of the expertise and thoroughness? Be all of this as it may, we will wait patiently for the results of the official investigations. However, I would like to add at this point, that it is quite possible, that this event was staged and used by the private weapons traders, the Russian, the Israeli, or both, as the free and powerful advertising of their deadly wears, possibly targeted at the Gulf Arabs, whom they managed to properly scare, in advance of their pitch, with the "Big Bad Wolf Iran". This sales and advertising tactics would be in line with previously outlined patterns, and a part of them. It might be all about money, in addition to the other present but secondary aspects. Russian Jewish Mafia is "inventive and creative", and raised on blood and corruption. Michael Novakhov | This Post - 10:25 AM 1/10/2020

CNN's YouTube Videos: Iranian ambassador: US putting a knife to our throat with sanctions CNN's YouTube Videos Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Majid Takht Ravanchi: "As I said, we are not interested, we are not looking after killing the Americans within this operation." - Tape: 3.20 - 3.30 M.N.: I think, that this is the main part of the message, and it was said very clearly, loudly, and nicely. Thank you, Ambassador, and the Iranian people for your understanding of the situation, and your good will. I also think, in my humble opinion, that the Ambassador's point regarding the economic sanctions as "the knife at the throat" of the Iranian people does have a merit, and it deserves our attention, understanding, and review: we cannot pass and implement the punishing sentence before the proper investigation and the trial, so to speak and to use this metaphor: if the guilt is not proven and/or sufficiently demonstrated, as in the episode with the downing of the Ukrainian plane. It would squarely go against our own principles of fairness and objectivity. I humbly call on Mr. Trump and his Administration to review and to revise these policies and decisions, with the proviso and the honest, in good faith, understanding and cooperation from the Iranian side, that these and other funds will not be used for any hostile plans and activities against the United States or any other related targets. I hope, that there is a good chance for the fair working compromise and for "the meeting of the minds" in this area. I have to state with satisfaction, that the process of De-escalation does continue, and it is productive. Hopefully, it will lead to the continuous relief of tensions, resolution of the current conflict, and the further continuing and the genuine progress in improving the relations. This is long overdue also. At meantime, the investigations of the Ukrainian plane crash do continue, and I have some thoughts on this subject, which I will share with you later on. All is well, that ends well; as all of us like to think and to say. A New World War II Narrative
(Bloomberg Opinion) -- The 75th anniversary of the end of World War II was the only forthcoming event Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned in his New Year’s address to the nation. Creating an alternative to the dominant Western narrative about that war is key to Putin’s way of securing Russia’s place in the world.
Putin has appeared lately to be obsessed with World War II, discoursing about it at every opportunity — during an informal session with other post-Soviet leaders, at his big end-of-year press conference, in a meeting with Russian tycoons, at the Defense Ministry in the presence of top generals. He’s talked time and again about delving into archival documents; he’s mentioned working on a scholarly article about the war. Even for a leader who has made the Soviet Union’s victory over the Nazis (seen by many as a triumph over a rotten Europe) a cornerstone of the new Russian national identity, Putin’s evident emotional involvement and the sheer time investment are unusual.
That’s because Putin, his foreign policy advisers and his propagandists see the dominant narrative of the war shifting against Russia.
Throughout the Cold War’s worst years, the victorious alliance of the Soviet Union, the U.S., the U.K. and France was a reminder that cooperation was possible. There is, however, a tendency to dump that baggage now and to treat Russia as a villain without any qualifications. Late last year, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was asked to recall when he’d changed his mind. His response:
What I’ve really changed my mind on was whether it is possible to reset with Russia. I really thought, as I think many foreign secretaries and prime ministers have thought before, that we could start again with Russia. That it’s a great country we fought with against fascism. It was very, very disappointing that I was wrong.
The Kremlin is extremely sensitive to such signals — not just for domestic propaganda reasons, but because Russia’s global power is still based on some important spoils of World War II. As one of the nations that vanquished Hitler, the Soviet Union didn’t just win control over Eastern Europe, it received a place atop the postwar global order and an all-important permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. If the Soviet Union is primarily seen as Hitler’s ally at the outset of the war — which of course it was — rather than a Hitler conqueror at its conclusion, if Russia has never really been on the right side of history, it has no claim to moral authority and to a role as a global arbiter. To Putin, that role is, in a way, as important as Russia’s nuclear shield. The ability to say authoritatively what’s right and what’s wrong is, after all, a major part of what makes the U.S. a global superpower.
Kremlin-linked historians and propagandists see the shifting narrative as the result of Eastern Europe’s increased role in the continent as a whole. Since, of all European nations, Poland and the Baltic states are the most concerned with the policy and politics of memory, their loud voices have drawn the European political elite’s attention away from the victory and toward the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact of 1939, in which Nazi Germany and Josef Stalin’s USSR divided up spheres of influence in Europe. One result of this was a European Parliament resolution last year that equates the Soviet regime with the Nazi one in terms of the damage done to Europe, a document that has been a strong irritant to the Russian leadership and to Putin personally.
This year’s first issue of Russia in Global Politics, a foreign-policy journal with strong Kremlin links that often provides insights into the Putin administration’s geopolitical thinking, contains the transcript of a fascinating debate among prominent Russian historians on how Russia might try to shape the World War II narrative in a more politically advantageous direction. The debate casts Israel as Russia’s only ally in fighting the turning tide, and Poland as its main adversary.
The logic behind this is that Israel will never agree with the propaganda narratives of the nationalist governments in Poland and the Baltics, which aim to reject all blame for locals’ cooperation with the Nazis during the Holocaust. Indeed, as the Polish government has doubled down on its own nationalist memory policy — which casts Poland as an innocent victim of both Russian and German aggression — it has clashed repeatedly with Israel and the global Jewish community.
The Poles have also had their difficulties with the European Union: They’ve tried to push through a reform of their judiciary that is seen in Brussels as an attack on the rule of law, and they’ve torpedoed various common policies in areas such as immigration and climate protection.
So here’s the recipe for the Russian memory counteroffensive as formulated during the discussion by Moscow State University historian Fyodor Gaida:
So then our main scapegoat is Poland. If we and the European bureaucrats need a common enemy, I guess Poland will be the first candidate. Poland’s role should get the most attention, which is what’s happening today. Our main ally is, yes, Israel. I agree completely, this topic must be developed: Jews in the Red Army and so on.
Gaida also proposes that Russia should stress that all former Soviet republics contributed to the victory, rather than that Russia led the effort.
So far, Putin has played all these cards. He has repeatedly recalled Poland’s land-grab in Czechoslovakia after France and Britain agreed to that country’s carve-up in Munich in 1938. During the meeting with the generals, he recalled how a Polish ambassador to the Third Reich told Hitler he’d be commemorated with a statue in Warsaw if he managed to dispatch the Jews to Africa, as he once planned. “A bastard, an anti-Semitic pig, I have no other way to say it,” Putin raged.
Never mind that the ambassador in question, Josef Lipski, actually helped Jews fleeing Germany before the war get into Poland, as Polish Jewish community leaders pointed out. On Jan. 23, Putin will give an address at a ceremony in Israel commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Red Army’s liberation of Auschwitz, but Polish President Andrzej Duda has refused to go because he hasn’t been given a chance to speak.
As for the former Soviet republics’ role in the victory, Putin made it the focus of his meetings with ex-Soviet leaders last month, telling them, “For all of us — I’d like to stress that and I know you agree — for all of us this is a special anniversary, because our ancestors, our fathers, our grandfathers have placed so much on the altar of our then-common Fatherland.”
Over the next few months, we should expect the Russian memory counterattack to develop in new directions. During the historians’ debate, Alexander Lomanov from the International Economics and Foreign Relations Institute in Moscow proposed working more closely with China, which, he said, would appreciate more attention to its role in defeating Japan and thus allowing the Soviet Union to spare its forces for the anti-Hitler front. In return, he said, China would be happy to promote the idea that the Soviets were the main force behind the victory in Europe:
The Chinese narrative has retained many of the familiar positive images of the “great Soviet Union” and “mighty Red Army,” which made the decisive contribution into crushing fascism. Given the strict control over historical memory in China, any “spontaneous” criticism of the Soviet Union role in World War II is impossible. The narrative is created from above and controlled by the political elite.
Much of Putin’s foreign-policy activity this year will be directed toward trying to rebuild a more Russia-centric concept of the victory over the Nazis. This is territory where Putin isn’t prepared to give ground, and given the enormous complexity of the historical material as well as the cross-currents of Israeli, U.S. and European memory politics, he can put up quite a diplomatic and propaganda fight.
It's precisely these complexities, though, that make any kind of government involvement in shaping the memory of World War II so abhorrent. As politicians cherry-pick the blood-soaked record for political purposes, truth is the biggest loser. As Alexey I. Miller of the European University in St. Petersburg put it during the historians’ discussion, “The idea that we are returning to historical memory to overcome political differences and enmity has been superseded by the understanding of memory as one more area where political goals are being sought.” Russia, given its size and the dizzying extremes of its World War II record, shouldn’t get involved in this. It should take pains to recognize and atone for its crimes even as it celebrates its heroic past. Even if narrative wars are a reality, refusing to fight them is the strongest possible position.

Greed, stupidity and raw instinct was the driving force behind Trump’s attack on Iran – Raw Story
The simplest explanation is often the correct one.
Why did Donald Trump order the assassination of Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, and by doing so push the United States and Iran to the brink of war?
It is more than reasonable to conclude that Donald Trump ordered this killing to distract the American people from his impeachment and many other scandals. Trump also escalated a conflict with Iran for other self-interested reasons such as pride, ego and, very likely, greed. Trump and his advisers also calculated that a war with Iran would help him in the 2020 election.
Tuesday evening Iran retaliated by launching ballistic missiles at two American airbases in Iraq. These attacks were an attempt by Iran’s leaders to make a show of strength and national pride. Later that evening, Iran’s government announced a cessation of hostilities on their part if the U.S. would reciprocate.
Military analysts are now suggesting that Iran targeted its missiles in such a way as to minimize casualties among American and Iraqi forces. No one appears to have been killed.
A regional conflagration was averted not, at least momentarily, because of anything Trump did but rather despite him.
In total, Trump’s Iran gambit is a gross failure that has further diminished the power and prestige of the United States.
Iraq has now demanded that the U.S. remove its troops from that nation (although this is unlikely to happen). Iran has announced it will no longer adhere to restrictions on its nuclear program. Iran’s retaliation has rallied its people against the U.S., and American influence in the Middle East and around the world has been further diminished. This creates a power vacuum that Russia, China and other hostile powers are likely to fill.
Ultimately, the Iran debacle is another example of the ways Donald Trump is singular and “unique” among American presidents — in the worst possible sense. None of his predecessors have embodied Trump’s racism, cruelty, ignorance, greed, corruption, violence, misogyny, apparent sociopathy and laziness all in one person.
Trump is also the first president to be impeached for matters related to foreign policy and election interference in the United States. He will be the first president to seek re-election after being impeached.
Trump has earned another “distinction” as well. He is America’s first mercenary president. Machiavelli’s famous treatise on politics, “The Prince,” describes such people:
Self-interest and corruption are the foundations of Trump’s mercenary regime. Trump was impeached for abusing the power of the presidency in his attempts to blackmail and extort the government of Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election. Watchdog groups have documented hundreds if not thousands of examples of the ways Trump uses the office of the presidency to personally enrich himself, and engages in corrupt behavior of many other kinds. He forces the Secret Service and other government agencies to pay him for using his hotels and other properties. He overtly sells influence (or at least the promise of influence) to foreign governments, corporations and other private interests.
Trump’s corruption has been highly lucrative for him and his family. It is estimated that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner — who also work as White House advisers — made at least $82 million in outside income during 2017.
Because of his innate personality and his authoritarian politics, Trump rejects the very notion of “public service” and the common good. He views the U.S. government as an extension of his will, personality and goals. To that end the public good is to be subsumed by what is good for Donald Trump (and his family and allies), whether personally, financially and politically. In all, Trumpism is the logic of organized crime imported into the White House and then applied to American government.
The mercenary nature of Trump’s presidency is amplified by his almost total lack of transparency. Trump will not release his tax returns to the public, an obvious effort to conceal all the ways he puts his personal financial interests above those of the American people.

Trump’s lack of transparency also raises profound and disturbing questions about his decision-making regarding Iran and other foreign countries. Is Trump personally profiting from investments in defense contractors? Are Trump and his family war profiteers?
And of course, do Trump’s many foreign entanglements include debts to Russian oligarchs, as has been widely rumored? As a practical matter, does that mean that the president of the United States is Vladimir Putin’s vassal?
Trump’s lack of transparency is another manifestation, among many, of his illegitimacy. The Russia and Ukraine scandals have made clear that Trump has no respect for the Constitution, American democracy and the rule of law.
Trump remains extremely unpopular among the American people. He lost the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election by close to 3 million votes. He won the election anyway because of a the regional and geographical bias of the Electoral College — and perhaps because of Russian interference, the FBI’s investigation of Hillary Clinton and numerous other marginal factors.

Trump leads a political cult and has no interest in expanding his base of support beyond a small group of supporters.
His chronic lying — as president, he has at least 15,000 times, according to the running count of the Washington Post — also undermines his legitimacy and credibility.
As Peter Nicholas of the Atlantic explains, Trump is in no position to convince Americans to support the “sacrifice and bloodshed” that would be required in a war with Iran: “He can’t assume people will accept what he says as true, because millions have concluded it never is,” and now must face “the gravest foreign-policy crisis of his tenure at a time when his credibility has been shredded.”
Nicholas continues by arguing that Trump is “a unique case”:

What was the political logic driving Trump’s attack on Iran?
It was meant to distract from the impeachment drama and to create a “rally around the flag” effect that would work to Trump’s benefit.
Did it work? That’s not clear. The situation is still developing, and the aftermath is unknown.
Because a war or other extended conflict has been averted for the moment, Trump has not received a boost from (more) human tragedy and suffering Middle East. A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that a majority of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran crisis.

But the mainstream news media has consistently normalized Donald Trump’s aberrant and dangerous behavior, and that pattern continues. The standards for Trump and his regime are now so low that the self-evident fact that the president attacked a foreign country’s senior leadership in order to distract the public from impeachment is not viewed as an especially significant story given the daily “firehose” of heretofore unimaginable and unfathomable behavior.
Donald Trump’s cult members, especially white Christian evangelicals, will apparently remain forever loyal. They are attracted to a war in the Middle East for many reasons, in part because it fulfills their mythological fantasies about the “end times” and the coming Rapture.
On Wednesday, Donald Trump gave a speech about the Iran crisis. True to form, he appeared agitated and out of sorts. Some observers have speculated that Trump may have been heavily medicated: He slurred his words and spoke, at moments, in a barely coherent manner.
He proclaimed “victory,” where of course the United States had no victory was.

Trump lied once again about Barack Obama by claiming that the former president had somehow financed the Iranian missiles used to attack U.S. and Iraqi forces. As we all know, Trump is an unrepentant racist who is obsessed with disparaging his predecessor, America’s first black president.
As befits an autocrat and tyrant in waiting, Trump surrounded himself with generals and other members of the national security establishment in an effort to project a sense of gravitas and power as he threatened Iran with America’s great and powerful weapons. Instead of demonstrating strength, dignity and power, Trump resembled a comical strongman from Woody Allen’s classic “Bananas.”
Trump has shown himself repeatedly to be a malignant narcissist and when he looks in the mirror he likely sees a god rather than a hapless buffoon. This is validated by his sycophants, minions, cult members and other enablers who constantly tell him that he is the greatest of all presidents, worthy of being an American emperor.
Those who believe such fables, unfortunately, are willing to force their nightmarish onto the American people and the world. They must be stopped before it becomes too late.
