Just before the 2020 election, Michael Cohen and Bob Woodward have written books promising new insider information on President Donald Trump.
Rage, a follow-up to Woodwards 2018 bestseller, Fear: Trump in the White House, arrives Sept. 15, and Cohens Disloyal: A Memoir: The True Story of the Former Personal Attorney to President Donald J. Trump hits shelves Sept. 8. Already available is a buzzy foreword for the latter, which Trumps former personal attorney released Thursday and signed, Michael Cohen, Otisville Federal Prison, Otisville, New York, March 11, 2020. As anyone in law enforcement will tell you, its only gangsters who can reveal the secrets of organized crime, Cohen wrote in the intro. If you want to know how the mob really works, youve got to talk to the bad guys. I was one of Trumps bad guys. ... This is a book the President of the United States does not want you to read. Deeming himself formerly Trumps demented follower, fixer and designated thug, Cohens foreword begins en route to Trumps impeachment trial, where the lawyer testified earlier this year. I knew he wanted me gone before I could tell the nation what I know about him, Cohen wrote, apparently believing Trump wanted him dead. Not the billionaire celebrity savior of the country or lying lunatic, not the tabloid tycoon or self-anointed Chosen One, not the avatar @realdonaldtrump of Twitter fame, but the real real Donald Trump the man very, very, very few people know. As opposed to Cohen, who calls himself the least reliable narrator on the planet, investigative journalist Woodward, who helped break open the Watergate scandal that led to Richard Nixons resignation, has positioned himself as a thorough and objective observer who conducted hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand witnesses for Rage, according to publisher Simon & Schuster. The forthcoming sequel to Fear also contains notes, emails, diaries, calendars and confidential documents from witnesses, as well as 25 personal letters exchanged between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that have not been public before. Additionally, the Pulitzer Prize winners account will offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Trumps responses to the pandemic, economic disaster and racial unrest in the United States, featuring multiple exclusive interviews with the president. Despite a number of poll numbers that predict Donald Trump will lose his reelection bid, one political scientist says the president has a good chance of winning a second term.
Helmut Norpoth, a political science professor at Stony Brook University--who forecasted Trump's 2016 win eight months ahead of the election and has accurately predicted 25 out of 27 elections--said on Fox News' The Ingraham Angle that Trump's reelection chances are above 90 percent. "The key to the November election is the primaries," Norpoth said, adding Trump won Republican primaries quite easily while presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden had difficulty winning delegates. "On balance, a stronger performance in primaries gives Donald Trump the edge in November." Norpoth cited Biden's fourth-place finish in the Iowa caucus and his fifth-place finish in the New Hampshire primary as among his reasons for his forecast. "The list is long and discouraging for early front runners. Bush in 1992, and John Kerry in 2004, to cite just the most spectacular cases." "Where I would expect the pandemic to have an affect is on the approval rating of the president, and I don't see any dent in Trump's approval rating," he said. "Unless his approval rating collapses, I don't think this will have much bearing on my forecast." Norpoth said if Trump is able to refrain from commenting or tweeting about political opponents and instead focus on the continued economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, he stands a good chance of winning a second term. "He had some strong points that gave him that big win in the primaries, and I think that he has to take advantage of that," he said.
