Deutsche Bank’s loans to Donald Trump were underwritten by Russian state-owned VTB Bank, according to the whistleblower whose collection of thousands of bank documents and internal communications have captured the recent attention of federal investigators.
Val Broeksmit acquired the emails and files of his late father, Deutsche Bank executive William S. Broeksmit, after Broeksmit tragically took his own life in 2014.
Val informed the FBI in late 2019 about his knowledge of VTB’s underwriting of Trump’s loans, information he attributed to a network of sources connected to the bank he cultivated over the past five-plus years.
Underwriting is the process where financial institutions assess the ability of potential customers to fulfill their obligations. Underwriters have access to “credit and financial information, as well as the state of the [property],” according to US News, though underwriters can sometimes be unknown to the person seeking the loan.
Forensic News is not confirming the underlying claim that VTB underwrote Trump’s loans from Deutsche Bank.
Forensic News can, however, confirm that at least some of Trump’s loans were issued by a bank subsidiary with business ties to VTB. In the meantime Val Broeksmit a.k.a. @BikiniRobotArmy is teasing via Scot Stedman at Forensic News, whose web site is mysteriously down, a story, based on connections to Broeksmit and documents he possessed, that a portion of Trump’s Deutsche Bank loans were indirectly linked to Russian company VTB.
If the Documents go Deep it’s Huge, but So Far they are not Confirmed
As far as can be seen only a few smaller outlets picked up the story shortly before the original was unavailable due to the outage at Forensic News, for example “Inquisitr”. The article presents a summary of the original story and quotes the Deutsche Bank twitter response:
While it is true that larger media outlets have yet to follow up on this thread, the information trail does not appear to be at its conclusion and there me be details yet to come out that can be more widely corroborated.
According the the original Forensic News story, which is available in document form from download site Scribd, during the time that the web site is inaccessible, documentation, which they inspected, provided by Val Broeksmit, indicates that at least some of the loans extended to Trump where not from Deutsche Bank directly but rather a subsiary Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas (DBTCA) which had ties to VTB.
While not the smoking gun that was implied in the somewhat sensational title, this entire somewhat convoluted story to date, appears to indicate that the ongoing investigations into Trump financial dealings with Deutsche Bank are rife with potential bombshells.
Although Deutsche Bank is relying on “more responsible news outlets” to stay silent about possible negative connections to Trump, at the very least David Enrich’s book release, in February, is likely to contain a detailed account of this and much more potentially damning information about the inner workings of the bank.
It’s also not much of a stretch, as was mentioned in the NYT article sited above, that Val Broeksmit might just fulfill his dream of one day seeing a movie about his father and the scandals at Deutsche Bank that surrounded his death, if the threads of “Dark Towers” continue and expand.

Each era seems to have a bank emblematic of its excesses — in the 1980s, it was Drexel Burnham Lambert, the junk bond king; in the 2000s, it was Lehman Brothers.
The 2010s were different. No towering financial collapse marred the landscape; no Madoff or Enron blighted the business page. Yet never have good times felt so bad. In these early months of the next decade, America is prosperous but malcontent, solvent but anxious.
David Enrich, a former reporter with The Wall Street Journal and now the finance editor of The New York Times, has found, perhaps, the perfect vehicle for this murky, un-transparent moment. Name a banking scandal and Deutsche Bank was in the thick of it — interest rate manipulation, Russian money laundering, currency dealings with rogue states, the collapse of Italy’s (and the world’s) oldest bank, hidden derivative losses, a high-level suicide.
It would have been perfect had Deutsche bankrolled a shunned real estate mogul and made him king — and of course, they did that too, the one bank that lent to Donald Trump long after he had a reputation for stiffing its peers and for stiffing Deutsche itself.
No single thread connects these myriad scandals, but “Dark Towers” offers a compelling, if familiar, thesis: that unchecked ambition twisted a pillar of German finance into a reckless casino and fostered a culture in which amorality and, ultimately, criminality thrived.

Deutsche is intriguing not only because its leaders chased growth at any cost — resulting in mountains of losses, as it always does — but because it once was the emblem of European institutional lending, the near-opposite of Wall Street short-termism. Founded in Berlin in 1870, just before German unification, Deutsche saw its mission as advancing not just profits but German commerce in Europe and America. And over the next century — save for a nasty lapse under the Nazis, when it pressured corporate clients to rid themselves of Jewish directors — Deutsche did that well. As late as the 1980s, when Wall Street was preaching the glories of debt, Deutsche stood for stability, social as well as financial. It had no C.E.O. excesses because it had no C.E.O. It was run, consensually, by a vorstand (board), an arrangement designed to promote harmony with labor unions and industrial partners.
However, as the West deregulated markets, profits from trading soared. Wanting in on the game in 1995, Deutsche recruited Edson Mitchell from Merrill Lynch to expand its markets desk. Mitchell was a gunslinger who would wager $10,000 on a golf putt — arguably, not much riskier than the derivatives Merrill peddled to clients. Merrill was so good at peddling these unprotected market bets that one high-profile institutional client, Orange County, Calif., purchased enough to wind up in bankruptcy.
Seeking just this sort of expertise at Deutsche, Mitchell went on a hiring binge, snagging 2,500 traders and such from his former firm and others, which Enrich calls “one of the greatest migrations in Wall Street history.”
In no time, Deutsche’s center of gravity (and 85 percent of its profits) shifted to investment banking and trading. The bank’s formerly prudent style came to seem as dated as the dark oil portraits lining its corridors.
The thing about risk is, until it stops working it works rather well. As profits soared, Deutsche wanted more risk. It blithely quadrupled its balance sheet, swallowing Bankers Trust (which Enrich generously labels a third-rate firm) and purchasing a dicey mortgage shop at the peak of the bubble.
One telling moment in Deutsche’s evolution came when an executive bragged that they no longer needed “clients.” Why bother writing loans when you can trade derivatives? Another was when Josef Ackermann was anointed C.E.O. The Swiss-born Ackermann understood Wall Street all too well. He ran the bank for short-term profit and set a target of 25 percent on equity, the banking equivalent of driving 80 miles per hour on an icy road.
Troops got the message: Internal controls were scotched or ignored. It was a short step from taking outsize risks to fleecing customers — but when whistle-blowers reported concerns, they were shoved aside. Enrich recounts numerous examples. A trader named Christian Bittar was in line for a $100 million bonus; when this (unsurprisingly) prompted an internal review, Deutsche staged a whitewash and Bittar got his check. Enrich says the traders were “incentivized to engage in fraud.” Later, Bittar pleaded guilty to trying to rig a key interest rate.
One of the bank’s more troubling activities was laundering billions of Russian rubles (via sham transactions known as “mirror trades”) into U.S. dollars. Then there was client Trump. Enrich’s portrait isn’t new, but it makes for painful reading: the smooth persuasions, the obsequious flatteries, the lying about his net worth to garner loans for office buildings, resorts, casinos.
When Deutsche’s real estate team cut off Trump, private banking opened the spigot. When a loan came due, Trump had “no intention” of repaying, as if the rules for him were different. Deutsche’s brass was so in thrall to Trump’s celebrity, and so eager to expand in America, one division lent $48 million to cancel the debt on a Chicago skyscraper — a debt Trump had defaulted on with another wing of the same bank. They bought his pitch as voters would. In what could serve as a requiem for the country’s lost innocence, the general counsel said, “What the hell are we doing lending money to a guy like this?”
Enrich hangs his tale on the story of William Broeksmit, a derivatives trader and Mitchell’s pal and would-be protector. Broeksmit played the part of “superego” at the increasingly wayward bank, questioning risky trades and asking quaint questions such as “How does that help the client?” But he drank too much and suffered spells of darkness. He got bogged down in the legal and regulatory mire into which the bank was sinking. Eventually, Broeksmit hanged himself.
Broeksmit’s suicide elevated his usefulness as a narrative prop, perhaps more than Deutsche warranted. Enrich doggedly prowls the psychological shadows for clues about what might have driven him. He trails Broeksmit’s son, Val, who wasn’t close to his dad but who, after his death, embarks on a quest to find “answers” and to pin culpability on his father’s employer. Val gains access to his father’s email (and hacks into his mother’s credit cards) and shares the goods with journalists and investigators across Europe and America, often demanding money that he then spends on heroin and Oxy. This soap opera says much about the Broeksmits, less about Deutsche. To Enrich, the story shows that Wall Street lures good people “away from their moral and ethical principles.” However, he presents no evidence of Broeksmit acting immorally. He was, rather, a decent if imperfect banker who, as Enrich says, internalized his employer’s problems.
“Dark Towers” suffers some unfortunate tropes of business journalism: Val is “fueled” by Ritalin, traders are “fueled” by testosterone and “crazed” by adrenaline; the bank is “fueled” by greed. Perhaps “fuel” should be reserved for energy writers.
Enrich’s most tantalizing nugget is that in the summer of 2016, Jared Kushner’s real estate company (which received lavish financing from Deutsche) was moving money to various Russians. A bank compliance officer filed a “suspicious activity report,” but the report was quashed and she was fired. The suggestion that maybe the money was payback for Russian campaign meddling isn’t one that Enrich can prove. Similarly, we will have to wait to see if Deutsche can recover from years of banking malpractice that destroyed its capital and wiped out 95 percent of its stock price. In the meantime, Enrich has given us a thorough, clearly written and generally levelheaded account of a bank that lost its way.

Donald Trump just does what politicians have always done: That, in substance, was Republicans’ defense of their president in the Senate impeachment trial. But there is another interpretation of the Trump presidency, which Andrea Bernstein proposes in her new book, “American Oligarchs: The Kushners, the Trumps, and the Marriage of Money and Power.” Donald, his daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, represent the transformation of our political system into an oligarchy in which narrow circles of family members and business associates exploit public office to amass power and make money. In the words of journalist Sarah Chayes, “Networks made up of top government officials, captains of industry and out-and-out criminals, woven together, are hijacking government and economic function and bending it to serve the purposes of their personal enrichment.”
Bernstein weaves together two narratives: the rise of the Kushner and Trump families from modest immigrant origins to fame and riches, and the rightward shift in the political landscape that made the Trump presidency possible. The vast majority of the text details the questionable deals, political favors, deceptive practices and personal vendettas on which the Kushner and Trump family fortunes were built. This, of course, is not news. A cottage industry of Trump biographers and researchers has uncovered so many examples of deceptive, fraudulent and mean-spirited behavior by the president and his family that one succumbs to outrage fatigue.
The story Bernstein wants to tell, however, is not just about two families but about America, “a tale of specific choices about taxation, regulation, corruption, and campaign finance laws that brought us to where we are today.” In other words, the Trump presidency was a logical outcome of policy changes spearheaded by conservatives (with occasional bipartisan support), including tax cuts and deregulation, and the increasing influence of lobbyists and campaign spending. To make this point, the chronology of the rise of the Trumps and the Kushners is sprinkled with anecdotes about contemporaneous changes in the political landscape: the Reagan tax cuts, financial deregulation, the George W. Bush tax cuts and so on.
Donald Trump, however, was not a creation of the conservative revolution. The business model he inherited from his father, Fred, had been around for decades: Cozy up to local politicians, rake in government subsidies, siphon money out of development projects, bend the law, avoid paying taxes and call in political favors to cover your tracks. Fred got his start by cultivating Brooklyn Democratic Party bosses and lying to a bankruptcy court to buy a failed mortgage business during the Great Depression. Four decades later, Donald leveraged his connections with the mayor and deputy mayor of New York, claimed to have an option agreement he didn’t have and used his father’s financial backing to get a sweetheart deal to redevelop the Commodore Hotel on 42nd Street.
In other words, Trump made his fortune the old-fashioned way: through connections and what some might call corruption. He was supported by the Democratic Party machine in New York, just as Charlie Kushner (Jared’s father) invested in Democratic politicians across the Hudson River. The dubious schemes Trump engaged in – such as trying to get a “blight” designation for part of the Upper West Side so he could benefit from a federal subsidy – are standard currency in the world of retail government capture.
As rich men, Trump and Kushner certainly benefited from the Reagan and Bush tax cuts. But even as they gave more and more money to politicians, they remained largely incidental beneficiaries of the conservative revolution.
The parallel narratives of family and country come together with the presidential campaign and Trump’s election, which Bernstein frames as a capstone to our era of laissez faire, small government and dark money. The Trumps and the Kushners, she writes, “have both benefited from and fueled a system of widening inequality and greater influence of money in politics.”
Trump may be the answer to the past 40 years of political history, but perhaps not in the sense Bernstein describes. For starters, his electoral victory was not a product of unmatched amounts of money: He was outspent by several of his primary opponents (until they withdrew), and he trailed Hillary Clinton badly in both campaign fundraising and external spending.
It is certainly true that conservative leaders – and the billionaires who bankrolled them – set out to lower taxes, slash regulations, install a business-friendly judiciary and eliminate barriers to money in politics. What they produced was one type of oligarchy, which economist Simon Johnson and I described in 2010: a system in which big banks (among other companies) transmuted market power into political power, capturing politicians with fables of their economic importance – and with the prospect of high-paying jobs once they left office. “The Wall Street banks are the new American oligarchy,” we wrote then, “a group that gains political power because of its economic power, and then uses that political power for its own benefit.” The masters of the universe who ran the country’s largest banks had bent public policy to their will for decades, enabling them to earn enormous profits (and bonuses). In 2009, as their highly leveraged bets collapsed around them, they did what oligarchs always do: They shook down the government for a bailout, holding the entire economy ransom. Ah, the good old days.
The oligarchy of the Trumps and the Kushners, however, is something else. Where presidents once waited to leave office before cashing in on the speaking circuit, now the Trump International Hotel in Washington provides a convenient place for domestic supplicants and foreign leaders (and the president’s own inauguration committee) to pay tribute to the Trump family.Where regulators did favors for banks, perhaps hoping for future lobbying jobs, now the president, according to some of his own appointees, demands political favors from foreign governments in exchange for military aid – and gets away with it because the Justice Department and the Senate belong to him.
The replacement of the last decade’s oligarchs by the Trump-Kushner oligarchy is less the natural conclusion to our political drama than a surprise twist in the final act. Trump was clearly not the choice of the business elites who thought they ran the Republican Party and the country. Instead, he is a product of the Faustian bargains that the Republican establishment made along the way. By deploying racism tactically to get out the white vote, they paved the way for a candidate whom white supremacists could claim as their own; by fostering an alternative media universe, they conditioned their base to accept the most ridiculous lies as fact; by undermining and discrediting government, they made it possible for a billionaire showman to run as a truth-speaking outsider promising to drain the swamp.
Finally, Trump’s 2016 victory was a product of our age of rising inequality, but not in the sense that he, as a rich person, benefits from inequality. Indeed, his wealth has been dwarfed many times over by that of the new technology super-billionaires. Instead, with the widening chasm between the very rich and virtually everyone else clear to see, it is easy for ordinary people struggling with economic insecurity to feel that they have been left behind by the march of prosperity, that the system does not care about them.
Trumpism is an example of the alternatives that become conceivable when people have lost faith in their political and economic institutions. The Trump presidency itself only makes it more difficult to restore that faith.
