Does the U.S. Intelligence Community Fear Donald Trump?

This set of problems in intelligence-policy relations has taken a distinct turn for the worse in the presidency of Donald Trump for several reasons. One reason is that Trump’s presidency, far more than any previous U.S. presidency within memory, is built on lies.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday picked Rep. John Ratcliffe again to be the nation’s top intelligence official, just months after abruptly ending an earlier effort to install him in the post amid bipartisan criticism that the Texas Republican was unqualified for the job.
Trump’s decision meant that once again the GOP-led Senate would have to decide whether to put the three-term lawmaker in charge of overseeing the 17 U.S. spy agencies that Trump has repeatedly scorned.
Trump initially named Ratcliffe last year, but in August withdrew his name before the Senate formally considered him. The president bowed to questions about Ratcliffe’s qualifications and bipartisan concerns that he had little experience in the field of intelligence.
Since then, Ratcliffe’s visibility rose as an ardent defender of Trump during the House’s impeachment proceedings against him.
“John is an outstanding man of great talent!” Trump said in announcing his choice in a tweet.
If confirmed by the Senate, Ratcliffe would replace Richard Grenell, a Trump loyalist who is currently serving as acting national intelligence director while keeping his title as U.S. ambassador to Germany.
Trump’s choice drew swift criticism from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D.N.Y.
“Replacing one highly partisan operative with another does nothing to keep our country safe,” Schumer said in a statement. “At a time when the Russians are interfering in our elections, we need a nonpartisan leader at the helm of the Intelligence Community who sees the world objectively and speaks truth to power.”
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has been in upheaval since Dan Coats, who had a fraught relationship with Trump, announced in July 2019 that he was stepping down. Sue Gordon, the principal deputy national intelligence director under Coats, left with him. Democrats accused Trump of pushing out two senior, dedicated intelligence professionals.
After withdrawing Ratcliffe’s name, Trump in August named Joseph Maguire, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, as acting national intelligence director. But earlier this month, Trump moved Maguire aside — before his tenure as acting director was set to expire on March 11 — and named Grenell as acting director.
Trump’s decision to bring in Grenell came amid controversy over a classified briefing on election security that intelligence officials gave members of the House intelligence committee.
That panel is chaired by Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., who led the House impeachment inquiry against Trump. There were conflicting accounts about what the U.S. election security officials told committee members during the closed-door briefing about Russian meddling in this year’s presidential election.
People familiar with the congressional briefing said election security officials indicated that the Kremlin was looking to help Trump win re-election, as it did in 2016. But a senior official with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said lawmakers were not told that Russia was actively aiding Trump’s campaign to boost his chances of a second term. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive information.
When asked if Maguire was moved out as part of an effort to purge administration officials seen as disloyal to Trump, the president said only that Maguire’s tenure as acting director was ending. He called Maguire an “excellent guy” and said he chose Grenell to replace him as acting director until he can announce a new nominee for the job.
Grenell said he would hold the post for just a few months until Trump nominated a replacement for Maguire. If Ratcliffe is not confirmed by the Senate, it’s possible that Grenell could serve in the post for a while.
Ratcliffe, who sits on the House intelligence, judiciary and ethics committees, is a fierce defender of the president. He was a member of Trump’s impeachment advisory team and strenuously questioned witnesses during the House impeachment hearings.
He also forcefully questioned former special counsel Robert Mueller when he testified before the House Judiciary Committee about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
After the Democratic-controlled House voted to impeach Trump, Ratcliffe said: “This is the thinnest, fastest and weakest impeachment our country has ever seen. … When voters go to the polls next November, I hope they’ll hold Democrats accountable for wasting countless hours and taxpayer dollars on this disgraceful impeachment hoax that was designed to control the outcome of the 2020 election.”
Before being elected to Congress in 2014, Ratcliffe was mayor of Health, Texas, and a U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Texas. Ratcliffe is the son of two school teachers and the youngest of six children. He attended the University of Notre Dame and earned a law degree from Southern Methodist University. He and his wife, Michele, have two daughters.

Every day, America’s intelligence agencies work hard to keep Americans safe. Their agents and employees are spread across the world, often in some of the most dangerous places. It is commonplace for our intelligence agents to risk their lives to get vital information on enemy threats for the purpose of safeguarding the national security of the United States.
Before Donald Trump was elected president, we gave credence to what we were told by these patriotic agencies and their dedicated employees. They have not always been right, but they have a remarkable track record of protecting America and its people from harm.
We are now in a time when the commander in chief no longer believes the intelligence professionals. Instead, as he often proclaims, Trump relies on his gut to guide policy. As he often demonstrates, he also relies on friends like Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean tyrant Kim Jong-un to give him the straight scoop.

Story continues below video
Trump’s remarkable gut and his despotic friends guide our nation’s foreign policy, which raises the question of whether we have any need to maintain an expensive intelligence-gathering apparatus. Why spend more than $70 billion a year on the CIA and some 20 other intel agencies to protect the country when Trump’s gut and friends can do the job? Isn’t it wasteful to spend all that money on intelligence work if the president ignores it and claims intel professionals are liars and purveyors of fake news?
Robert Mueller documented the Russian attack on our 2016 election in great detail, disclosing the identity of the people who played a part in the attack and even some of what they actually said. Despite fulminating about Mueller’s findings, the president has not lifted a finger to disprove them, merely writing them off as fake news. The Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee has affirmed Mueller’s findings of Russian interference.
There can be no question that Putin supported Trump in the 2016 campaign. At his July 2018 meeting in Helsinki with Trump, Putin answered, “Yes, I did. Yes, I did,” when asked if he had wanted Trump to win the election. Yet, Trump continues to deny that the Russians tried to manipulate that election.
Trump nominated Sen. Dan Coats to serve as director of National Intelligence (DNI) in January 2017. From that point forward, Coats repeatedly affirmed the unanimous conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia had interfered in the 2016 election in favor of Donald Trump. He affirmed Mueller’s conclusion that the Russians would continue interfering through the 2020 election. When Coats persisted in warning of the Russian threat to our democracy, Trump forced his resignation on Aug. 15, 2019.
Trump appointed a highly decorated Navy Admiral and former Navy SEAL, Joseph McGuire, as acting DNI the following day. In January, McGuire told the House Intelligence Committee in a classified briefing that Russia would interfere in the 2020 election in Trump’s favor. He was fired several days later and replaced by a political hack with no intelligence experience. Our nation will continue its national security journey relying on Trump’s gut and friends, blind to the dangers ahead.
This repeated pattern of ignoring facts, rejecting intelligence assessments and demonizing intelligence professionals is extremely dangerous. The man who took down Osama bin-Laden, William McRaven, a highly decorated Navy Admiral and former Navy SEAL, had this to say about it: “As Americans, we should be frightened — deeply afraid for the future of the nation. When good men and women can’t speak the truth, when facts are inconvenient, when integrity and character no longer matter, when presidential ego and self-preservation are more important than national security — then there is nothing left to stop the triumph of evil.”

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:
One of the byproducts of the Russia collusion hoax is that people like me have lost a lot of faith in law enforcement. And that is saying a lot, considering that, to a fault, I find myself reflexively defending the cops.
But thanks to all of the leaks, lies and partisan score-settling coming from Jim Comey’s FBI, I can honestly say that I don’t trust them anymore.
In fact, I haven’t had this dim a view of the FBI since J. Edgar Hoover was trying on the new spring line of dresses at Bonwit Teller.
And I’m not alone. According to Pew Research, since early 2017, the share of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents with a positive view of the bureau has fallen 16 percentage points, from 65 to 49 percent.

In spite of this loss of trust, all the evidence suggests that they’ve learned absolutely nothing from their failed attempt to remove President Trump from office.
In fact, these same agencies are now playing dirty pool trying to sink Bernie Sanders’ campaign for the presidency.
One day before the Nevada Democratic caucus, someone leaked a story suggesting that Russia was interfering with the Democratic primary to help Sanders’ campaign.
Sanders said that law enforcement met with him a month before the story broke to tell him about their intel.
And just in case anyone cares, the “intelligence” info turned out to be wrong and was walked back almost immediately after Democrats finished voting in Nevada.
I feel like I’ve seen this movie before.  If you liked “50 Shades of the Steele Dossier,” you’ll love the sequel!
Adam Schiff is probably already building a case for the impeachment of President Bernie.
Granted, I can see why Russians who hate America would want Bernie to be president.  They’ve already lived through Communism.
From what I hear, the only contact Russia has recently had with Bernie is trying to get him to pay the hotel bill from his honeymoon in Moscow. Something about the mini-bar.
Enough is enough.
Somebody needs to tell them that FBI stands for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, not the Federal Bureau of Impeachment.
At this point I’m not worried about the Russians trying to influence our elections, I’m worried about Jim Comey’s pack of politically motivated jackals.
This mess needs to be cleaned up, and fast.
When local police departments are caught abusing their power, the feds step in and force them to enter into a consent decree.
Under these decrees, corruption is rooted out and reform is implemented.
Unfortunately, there’s not really a mechanism to do that with out-of-control federal agencies.
Which is why President Trump’s appointment of Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell as acting director of national intelligence was so necessary.
If you’ve been watching cable news the last few days, you’ve seen Grenell batted around by his critics for not having worked in the FBI or CIA before.
But these days, that should not be seen as a flaw, it should be seen as an attribute.
The culture at the top of these agencies is clearly toxic.  An outsider is exactly what the doctor ordered to come in with a mop and a bucket, and make those agencies respectable again.

I would note that the failure of these agencies to perform basic duties goes well beyond their political hatchet jobs against Trump and Sanders.  They’re also the same people who falsely told us that Iraq had stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction, that a movie caused our embassy in Benghazi to be attacked and that the Egyptian government was in no danger of falling.
Wrong, wrong, wrong.
I know Ric Grenell and have relied on him as a foreign policy analyst on my radio show.  He has nerves of steel and a rock-solid commitment to fairness and justice.
Dirty cops, beware.  There’s a new sheriff in town.

Digging into the coercion and propaganda of J. Edgar Hoover

He was not a handsome man like some of the gangsters he pursued. He looked more like a snarling bulldog. We’re not sure what he looked like when he dressed in women's clothes, but we do know he had a way with words. As the nation’s top “Gangbuster,” a potent protector of the American way of life and the impenetrable firewall between the Red Menace, Nazis and democracy, J. Edgar Hoover served 42 years as the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
During those years he wielded sweeping — and sometimes illegal — police powers, while leading a public relations team that was second to none. Above all he knew words mattered, especially to polish his image, which in the end may have been more important than fighting crime.
Marshall University associate professor Stephen M. Underhill covers that aspect of Hoover’s career in his new book “The Manufacture of Consent: J. Edgar Hoover and the Rhetorical Rise of the FBI.” The book, published by the Michigan State University Press, is part of its rhetoric and writing series.
Underhill readily admits his book is meant for the academic world, but it also will be enlightening to Hoover followers and to those who, during the anti-war, red scare and civil rights movements, thought they were under surveillance.
Hoover and his agency not only developed surveillance files on criminals but also his friends and enemies, and he often used the content of those files to coerce them to do his bidding. Numerous presidents used Hoover’s unique talents to investigate their enemies and build incriminating evidence on them about something unsavory they did, such as drug use, homosexuality or infidelity.
Underhill first became interested in the FBI and Hoover because his aunt was blacklisted during the Red Scare of the ’50s. “She had visited Russia and had enrolled in Russian language classes and she was blacklisted. She was a nurse and was unable to find a job until 1970,” he said.
Underhill said that after reviewing her FBI file, he discovered the Bureau had not seen her as a risk. “She was blacklisted because she pinged,” he said.
Fast-forward a few years, and Underhill is working at the National Archives as a student assistant making $15 an hour as the lead reference person for processing records relating to the FBI.
In 1994, a truckload of declassified FBI records relating to its propaganda activities arrived at the Archives. It was at a time he was looking around for a dissertation topic.
“After understanding what was in these records, I knew what I was going to do. I have to write about this but I am going to take my time,” he said. Following the rules in place at the time, he began using Freedom of Information Act requests to access the files. His inside position, however, did give him a leg up.
“There was a Wal-Mart-sized wall of files in boxes,” he said. Because he knew what was in the boxes he could make more specific requests. Requesting records through FOIA at the federal level can be very wonky because you have to know what’s there before you can ask for it, Underhill said.
Not surprisingly, before he left the Archives he discovered the FBI had purposely slowed down the time to process his requests. The Archives now prohibits requests from student workers.
Underhill shows how carefully Hoover and his team of public relations practitioners chose his words for public consumption,  how he used and abused media along and spread popular myths.
For example, he used words and metaphors to create images of wrong doers, aligning them with vermin, contagion and dope.
He also borrowed from the masculinity espoused by the old frontier in defending Americanism. In a speech he once said, “the vital test of Americanism is the revival of the pioneer spirit of our ancestors.”
The venomous speech he used with African-American and foreign-born was especially derogatory.
While doing this, Underhill said Hoover masked his sexuality with his own portrayal of masculinity and his choice of words. Who could doubt his courage and his virility if they listened to his speeches?
He also was a master showman perhaps influenced by one of his staff, who was once a clown and a PR person for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
Tourists visiting the FBI headquarters in the ’50s were given a demonstration of a blazing 50 caliber Tommy gun and heard insider stories about gangsters, bootleggers, Nazis and commie spies the FBI had brought down.
Underhill said, “He was a genius, but an evil genius.”
The author now ponders what would the course of history be if we didn’t have Hoover. He asks, “Would there have been a Cold War?”

In recent days, President Donald Trump has aimed his ire at the nation’s legal system. He has repeatedly attacked the forewoman of a jury that rendered a verdict against a longtime associate (Roger Stone); railed at a Democratic critic (House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff), goading his surrogates into demanding a federal investigation into Schiff; and urged two liberal Supreme Court justices (Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor) to recuse themselves from cases involving him and his administration.
And, oh yes, in the midst of all this, Trump anointed himself the nation’s “chief law enforcement officer,” a title that the Constitution does not confer on him and which undermines the important tenet that law enforcement be insulated from politics.
And what has the person generally called the chief law enforcement officer — Attorney General William Barr — done about this? Well, a couple of weeks ago, Barr called on Trump to stop tweeting about pending cases. But since then, as Trump responded to this mild rebuke by defiantly ramping up his attacks, Barr has been mum.
When Barr was nominated, we were encouraged that he would add gravitas and stability to one of the most important posts in government. He had served in the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and seemed far better qualified than Matthew Whitaker, who was occupying the job on an interim basis after Jeff Sessions was pushed out.
At Barr’s Senate confirmation hearing, he pledged “to provide the leadership necessary to protect the independence of this department.”
Barr has not lived up to that promise. In some respects, he has been more destructive than his predecessors: His pedigree has given him cover as he shreds the rule of law and promotes overly expansive views about executive power.
During his year on the job, the attorney general:
— Put a pro-Trump spin on the Mueller report, rushing to clear the president of attempting to obstruct justice despite substantial evidence to the contrary.
— Oversaw a department that took a nothing-to-see-here attitude toward a whistleblower’s complaint about Trump’s effort to shake down Ukraine’s government for dirt on a political rival.
— Reversed the decision of career prosecutors who were seeking a harsh sentence for Stone, a Trump confidante convicted of lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstruction. Four prosecutors quit the case, and one left the Justice Department altogether.
— Reopened the case of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, undermining the work of career prosecutors. Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in 2017 but later — at a time when Trump was pressing the Justice Department to be nice to his friends and harsh on his foes — asked to withdraw his plea.
— Until very recently continued the highly problematic pursuit of former Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who raised alarm bells about Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.
Before Barr, there had been some highly suspect actions taken by Justice, including a meritless lawsuit brought against the merger of AT&T and Time Warner that appeared to be based on Trump’s antipathy toward Time Warner’s CNN unit.
But the political interference has ramped up under Barr’s tenure. His actions have shocked former Justice employees (more than 2,600 of whom signed a letter calling on Barr to resign after his intervention in the Stone case) and prompted alarm among federal judges.
Barr said this month that Trump’s tweets and other comments are making it impossible for him to do his job. But does the attorney general see that job as doing impartial justice or the president’s bidding? Barr’s effort to straddle that line is growing increasingly untenable.

The FBI nabs four extremists for threatening journalists in Texas and other statesMike Nova's Shared Newslinks

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

In sifting signs of the times, one came through the other day like an alarm bell, the sort of horror that tells us just how dangerous things are becoming and how all people committed to a civil and just society must push back against the creeping darkness.
FBI agents arrested four suspects from four different states as part of a conspiracy “to threaten and intimidate journalists and activists,” according to the Justice Department.
The four targeted Jewish journalists and journalists of color, authorities allege. The threatening material they sent these journalists included Nazi symbols, images of Molotov cocktails and threats.
We live in a time when information, even the most basic facts, are in constant question. False information spreads like wildfire while the truth struggles to catch up.
Journalists who are tasked with sorting fact from fiction have too often become the first target of those who would obscure and even seek to destroy truth in the name of furthering their own will to power.
In this charged and dangerous environment, amplified in the poisonous echo chamber of social media, can anyone be surprised that extremists like those arrested this week single out journalists for attack and worse yet mix and mingle racism and anti-Semitism with their attack on the freedoms of press and speech?
In such a time, it is particularly dangerous to see the working press so persistently singled out for ridicule and diminishment.
These arrests are another opportunity for President Donald Trump to put aside his attacks on the free press and to support the work of journalists — even those whose reporting he disagrees with.
It is one thing to disagree. But planting the label fake news on basic reporting — something the president did 273 times last year — and standing by while supporters at rallies harangue and curse members of the press is not acceptable.

It’s important to note that it is the Justice Department, under Trump, that is bringing the case against these alleged extremists — Kaleb Cole of Montgomery in Southeast Texas; Cameron Brandon Shea of Redmond, Wash.; Taylor Ashley Parker-Dipeppe of Spring Hill, Fla.; and Johnny Roman Garza of Queen Creek, Ariz.
Everyone should be grateful for that.
But more should be done. Ideas shouldn’t be shouted down on campus just because they offer an opposing view. Free speech shouldn’t be squelched because it doesn’t fit an approved narrative. And leaders — starting with the president — should denounce efforts to undermine, intimidate and harm the press.
The founders understood just how critical a free and robust press is to the function of a democracy. But they didn’t love it, either.
George Washington, of all people, was the subject of brutal press coverage — much of it unfair and false in a way that wouldn’t stand up to modern standards of responsible news organizations. Even the great pamphleteer, Thomas Paine, turned on Washington in bitter response to Washington’s decision not to help free Paine from a French prison.
“Monopolies of every kind marked your administration almost in the moment of its commencement. The lands obtained by the revolution were lavished upon partisans; the interests of the disbanded soldier was sold to the speculator; injustice was acted under the pretence of faith; and the chief of the army became the patron of the fraud," Paine wrote.
Washington endured it all, knowing that a free Republic must have a free press.
Extremists would like to silence the American conversation. They would prefer a darkness where the only sounds were their own messages of hate and division and even violence.
Arresting and prosecuting people who would use violence to dominate our debates is essential to ensure the rule of law and the right to free expression. It’s the right step for the Justice Department to take.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Benjamin Grubb told KTLA that a member of the public had reported seeing the SUV on the highway.
The Los Angeles Police Department was pursuing the vehicle when it crashed.
Video footage from news helicopters showed that the vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage.
Grubb said the body did not appear to have been disturbed but it was unfortunate that the family of the dead person had 'to be put through further trauma'.
The hearse was stolen from outside the church while one of two bodies was being unloaded a night earlier.
The hearse belonged to a mortuary that had been contracted to transport two bodies to the church.
A mortuary attendant had taken one of the caskets into the church while the other was left in the vehicle outside.

Police said the hearse had been stolen by the time the worker came back out.
The sheriff's department had appealed to the thief on social media on Wednesday to return the body.
'Out of all the bad decisions you have made, at least make one good one and bring back the deceased person and casket inside the Navigator,' it tweeted.
The sheriff's office later tweeted their thanks to the person who reported seeing the stolen hearse.
'Huge THANK YOU to the good samaritan that called law enforcement when they saw the stolen vehicle,' they tweeted.
'We also want to send condolences to the family members of the deceased person, who had to deal with this tragedy.'

House Dems Unanimously Block Resolution Condemning Sanders’s Cuba CommentsMike Nova's Shared Newslinks

House Democrats on Thursday unanimously blocked a resolution condemning Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) over his comments praising murderous Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
After Sanders commended Castro for a "massive literacy program" during a 60 Minutes interview Sunday, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R., Fla.) announced a resolution condemning the Vermont senator. A Cuban American whose family fled to the United States, Diaz-Balart said the resolution declares "solidarity with the people of Cuba as they struggle against totalitarianism while demanding human rights, democracy, and freedom."
House Democrats blocked the resolution in a party-line vote Thursday, with two Florida Democrats skipping the vote despite previously criticizing Sanders's comments.
Reps. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D., Fla.) and Donna Shalala (D., Fla.) did not vote on the resolution, though both voted on the item immediately following it and Shalala spoke on the House floor just minutes before missing the vote. Both Democrats slammed Sanders following his defense of Castro. Mucarsel-Powell called the comments "absolutely unacceptable" and Shalala asked Sanders to "speak to some of my constituents before [deciding] to sing the praises of a murderous tyrant."
Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D., Fla.) also criticized Sanders's comments, calling them "ill-informed and insulting." However, she voted to block Diaz-Balart's resolution.
The three congresswomen represent districts with large populations of Cuban Americans. They have distanced themselves from Sanders as they face reelection.
"You cannot condemn Israel and compliment Castro and win in Florida," Murphy told Bloomberg News.
Sanders has yet to receive an endorsement from Florida's Democratic congressional delegation. Mucarsel-Powell told the Miami Herald she is "seriously considering endorsing another candidate."
Diaz-Balart's resolution condemned Castro's "use of firing squads, imprisonment, torture, and acts of repudiation to suppress dissent in totalitarian Cuba." The Florida Republican admonished his Democratic colleagues Thursday for voting to block the resolution.
"It's shameful that House Democratic Leadership refused the opportunity to condemn Senator Bernie Sanders's inaccurate, hurtful, and irresponsible comments on the racist, terrorist Castro regime," Diaz-Balart said. "Unlike Sen. Sanders and House Democratic Leadership, I'm proud to, once again, stand with my Republican colleagues in solidarity with the Cuban people and not with the regime that oppresses them."

The man who opened fire at the Molson Coors plant Wednesday, killing five co-workers and himself, had been involved in a long-running dispute with a co-worker that boiled over before he came back with two guns and started shooting, according to law enforcement and brewery sources.
Anthony N. Ferrill, 51, had worked as an electrician for more than 20 years, about 17 of them at Molson Coors, according to multiple sources and online employment records.
A co-worker who asked not to be identified for fear of being disciplined said Ferrill believed he was being discriminated against because he was African American and that he frequently argued with at least one of the victims, a fellow electrician.
The co-worker said Ferrill often watched movies on his phone during the day, which the other electrician took issue with, and that the two accused each other of going into each others' offices and stealing tools or tampering with computer equipment.
Complete coverage:Shooting at Milwaukee's Molson Coors brewery campus
About a year ago, the employee said, Ferrill started saying he believed brewery workers were coming into his home, bugging his computer and moving chairs around.
"I was: 'Are you serious, Anthony? What?' We all kind of joked about it, saying we should maybe get him an aluminum hat. Things just started getting weird. But he was dead serious about it," the co-worker said.
But another co-worker, Keith Giese, said Ferrill seemed fine when he saw him earlier this week.
"I never had a clue. I talked to him a couple of days ago and he seemed fine to me," Giese said. "I had no idea that there was a problem, that somebody could snap like that."
As word spread Thursday that Ferrill was the shooter, co-workers and neighbors echoed that surprise.
"He was a very good electrician, a very good worker and I couldn’t say anything bad about the guy," said Phillip Rauch Sr., who retired in April after working with Ferrill for 15 years. "Every time I worked with him he was always in a good mood."
Ferrill was a licensed industrial journeyman electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Milwaukee. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1987 to 1991 and was honorably discharged, according to Rick Flowers of Milwaukee County Veterans’ Services.
Ferrill received a VA loan to help purchase his three-bedroom ranch home in the 8200 block of West Potomac Avenue. He had lived there with his wife and family since 2004.

Ferrill has a long history of back pain that was made worse when he was in car accidents in 2009 and 2010, according to court records. He was a co-plaintiff with the MillerCoors LLC Health Benefits Program in a 2015 lawsuit in connection with the second wreck.
A report filed as evidence in that suit, written by Glendale physician Jeffrey Gorelick, states Ferrill's back problems started about 25 years earlier.
He would use Vicodin, an opioid-based pain killer, and Cyclobenzaprine, a muscle relaxant, when lower back pain flared up, Gorelick wrote.
"In spite of the back pain, he works every day as an electrician and pushes himself to get through the day," wrote Gorelick, who filed the report in support of Ferrill's lawsuit. "However, he is known on weekends to sometimes spend most of both days in bed recovering to allow him to get to work the next week."
The physician quoted Ferrill as saying: "Anything involving low back stamina I can't do. Shoveling, bending over at work, stooping, awkward positions, lifting my daughter."
The report notes that Ferrill had three children, two who were in their 20s at the time and one who was 7.
Ferrill normally worked more than 50 hours a week, Gorelick wrote.
Ferrill underwent multiple shoulder surgeries and had been forced to take time off work intermittently for years, according to neighbor Erna Roenspies, who said she had become close to Ferrill and his wife during the 15 years they've lived on her block. A few years ago, he told her insurance investigators were parked in the neighborhood, watching to see if he was working around the house, which could affect his workman’s compensation claim, Roenspies said.

Police continued to occupy Ferrill’s home Thursday; detectives and officers occasionally emerged with items.
Police tape still surrounded the house, which has a playset in the backyard, as neighbors struggled to reconcile the helpful man they knew with the heinous act authorities say Ferrill committed.
Roenspies said Ferrill sometimes helped her around the house, especially after her husband of 60 years died three years ago. She last saw Ferrill about a week ago when he came to help her with a faulty hot water heater.
“He was like my son,” Roenspies said Thursday. “He was a person who would help anyone in the neighborhood. This, it’s a shocker. I still don’t believe it.”
She said Ferrill was a gun collector, putting them together in his home. He told her it was his hobby.
“I said, ‘I hate guns. I don’t want to see them,” she said. And she said she never did.
Elizabeth LaPine has lived in the neighborhood for 11 years. She said she once saw what she believed to be a gun safe delivered to the home.
“I knew he was interested in guns,” LaPine said.
She said it was hard to believe Ferrill was the shooter.
“I would never believe it ... that he could do something like that,” LaPine said. “He didn’t give me the impression that there was anything wrong. It didn’t seem like there was anything different.”
Ferrill had a Doberman pinscher named Lucas, LaPine said.
“He loved that dog,” LaPine said. “He played ball with it in the street when there wasn’t much traffic. He’d throw the ball down the street and the dog would chase after it.”
LaPine said Ferrill walked the dog every day before leaving for work.
She said Ferrill looked out for his home and his neighbors.
“He had given me his phone number about a year ago,” LaPine said. “He said ‘If you see anybody messing around the house or anything like that ... give me a call.’ ”
Neighbor Patricia Dibb said she felt “shock, anger, sadness” when she heard about the shooting.
“Sadness for the families; sadness for his wife; sadness for his daughter,” Dibb said while holding back tears. “Sadness.”
LaPine said she also feels terrible for the families involved, including the Ferrills.
“If you’re mad at somebody or something, talk it out, don’t shoot it out,” LaPine said. “You’re just hurting so many families.”

Trump campaign lawsuit against New York Times exposes honesty of New York TimesMike Nova's Shared Newslinks

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

On Wednesday, the Trump campaign filed a defamation complaint in the New York State Supreme Court against the New York Times over an opinion piece from March 2019. Titled “The Real Trump-Russia Quid Pro Quo,” the piece was published three days after Attorney General William P. Barr issued his summary of the Mueller report. Barr wrote that former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation “did not find that the Trump campaign or anyone associated with it conspired or coordinated with Russia in its efforts to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.”
In the essay, Max Frankel — who served as executive editor of the Times from 1986 to 1994 — appeared to be playing off Barr’s summary. Here’s the lead of the piece:
Collusion — or a lack of it — turns out to have been the rhetorical trap that ensnared President Trump’s pursuers. There was no need for detailed electoral collusion between the Trump campaign and Vladimir Putin’s oligarchy because they had an overarching deal: the quid of help in the campaign against Hillary Clinton for the quo of a new pro-Russian foreign policy, starting with relief from the Obama administration’s burdensome economic sanctions. The Trumpites knew about the quid and held out the prospect of the quo.
Based on such language, the Trump campaign is claiming damages in the millions of dollars. The allegations, argues the complaint, are false, as proven by the Mueller report and “many other published sources.” It continues: “Among other things, there was no ‘deal,’ and no ‘quid pro quo,’ between the Campaign or anyone affiliated with it, and Vladimir Putin or the Russian government.”
It’s tough to defame a presidential campaign, and the complaint is clear-eyed on this matter. The document concedes that for the purposes of the law, the Trump campaign is a public figure — meaning that it needs to prove the Times wrote false things with knowledge of their falsity or with “reckless disregard” of their truthfulness. That is the so-called actual malice standard.
And in its attempt to meet that standard, the Trump campaign complaint concedes that the Times, in fact, is not corrupt in the least. To substantiate the point that the newspaper knew the falsity of its opinion piece, the suit argues that the pages of the Times provided plenty of real, actual news: “Extensive information, including stories in The Times published before the Defamatory Article, established that, at most, there had been isolated contacts between individual Russians and some persons associated with the Campaign, which did not result in any ‘deal’ or ‘quid pro quo,’ ” reads the complaint. It goes on to cite four New York Times stories that pretty well established that the famous June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Trump campaign officials, a Russian lawyer and others produced nothing of value to the campaign.
By any honest — or even lazy — reading of the Frankel opinion piece, it’s clear that the author wasn’t alleging any acts of specific collusion or coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia. It was an “overarching deal,” not an illegal conspiracy. The freedom to write just such material without losing millions of dollars in a jury verdict is precisely why the First Amendment grants a wide berth for opinion and commentary on matters of public interest. Citing the landmark 1964 case New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, University of Georgia professor Jonathan Peters tweeted:
The Trump campaign’s complaint comes off the desk of Charles Harder, the attorney who represented Hulk Hogan (whose real name is Terry Bollea) in the privacy case that resulted in the eventual bankruptcy of Gawker Media. He sent a preposterous threat letter to CNN last fall.
First Amendment attorney Ted Boutrous provided an opinion on the complaint’s merits:
The New York Times has issued this statement: “The Trump campaign has turned to the courts to try to punish an opinion writer for having an opinion they find unacceptable. Fortunately, the law protects the right of Americans to express their judgments and conclusions, especially about events of public importance. We look forward to vindicating that right in this case.” The Erik Wemple Blog asked the Times to address the suit’s claim that the newspaper didn’t contact the campaign prior to publication — evidence of actual malice, according to the complaint. “It was an opinion piece on reported news, not reporting on new facts. We wouldn’t expect the writer to seek comment from the campaign (or Putin, for that matter),” responded Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy.
By the recollection of the Erik Wemple Blog, the Frankel piece didn’t cause an uproar in the public square. Frankel’s was among many voices addressing Trump and his inexplicable amity toward Russia. Yet the complaint suggests grand impact: “The Defamatory Article has forced, and will continue to force, the Campaign to expend funds on corrective advertisements and to otherwise publicize the fact that the Campaign did not collude with, have a deal with, or have a ‘quid pro quo’ with Russia regarding the 2016 election. The Campaign has been damaged in an amount to be proven at trial.”
If the Trump campaign were really so concerned about this particular opinion piece, surely it requested a correction or retraction at the time, right? “We never saw any demand for a correction or retraction,” Murphy noted in an email.

Top GOP rep suggests Durham probe will lead to charges | Fox NewsMike Nova's Shared Newslinks

Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., suggested Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference that U.S. Attorney John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Russia probe will lead to criminal charges.
Collins, who has served as the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee but is leaving the role after announcing a Senate campaign, described at CPAC what he believes will come out of Durham’s probe.
WHAT IS CPAC?
“This is not going to be a Mueller report; there won’t be a report,” Collins told Fox News, noting that Durham and his team have kept very “quiet” about their work. “When he’s ready to charge people, he’ll charge people.”
He added: “And that’s when we’ll know.”
Collins’ comments came just moments after he spoke at CPAC on the topic of the Russia investigation at the FBI, and the appointment of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller, as well as his nearly two-year investigation.
DOJ INVESTIGATES THE INVESTIGATORS: 5 INTERNAL PROBES UNDERWAY ON RUSSIA AND MORE
“Durham is investigating, Attorney General Bill Barr has expanded his reach into the intelligence community,” Collins said during the presentation, adding that he has “grand juries” and “everything else” at his disposal.
Last year, Barr appointed Durham, of Connecticut, to review the events leading up to the 2016 presidential election and through Trump’s January 20, 2017 inauguration. But, as Fox News first reported, Durham has since expanded his investigation to cover a post-election timeline spanning the spring of 2017 — when Mueller was appointed as special counsel.
Durham has investigated CIA officials and other officials throughout the intelligence community. Former CIA Director John Brennan has said that Durham plans to interview him and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. Those interviews have yet to take place, a source familiar with the investigation told Fox News earlier this month.
Top House Intelligence investigator Dan Goldman departing Capitol HillMike Nova's Shared Newslinks

(CNN)Dan Goldman, a former federal prosecutor who played a major role in the impeachment proceedings, is leaving his perch on the House Intelligence Committee, a move that underscores how House Democrats are shifting away from high-profile investigations into President Donald Trump in the run-up to the November elections.
Goldman, who previously worked as a top prosecutor at the US attorney's office in the Southern District of New York, was hired last year at the beginning of the new Congress as a director of investigations on the House Intelligence Committee. And after the House opened an impeachment inquiry last fall, Goldman took the lead in the House in questioning witnesses both in public hearings and behind closed doors.
Goldman is the third high-profile House Democratic adviser to leave Capitol Hill since the end of Trump's impeachment trial when he was acquitted by the Senate earlier this month. The other two, Barry Berke and Norm Eisen, served as top advisers on the House Judiciary Committee before they left Capitol Hill earlier this month.
Goldman, who is returning to New York, began to share news of his departure on Wednesday with his colleagues. Asked for comment, Goldman said it was "an honor of a lifetime" to work under Chairman Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, and the committee to "help provide a vital check on the President, as the Constitution requires Congress to do."
Goldman added: "I'm indebted to my colleagues for working tirelessly in pursuit of that objective. While I am eager to return to New York to spend some much-needed time with my family, I know that the committee's work will continue apace under Chairman Schiff's leadership."
Schiff praised Goldman's tenure at the committee.
"Over the past year, Dan Goldman has provided strategic guidance, wise counsel and steady leadership to our Committee through a turbulent, but critical time," Schiff said in a statement. "We know that the team Dan helped us build from scratch will continue their important work, and while we will all miss him in the committee, we know that his family is excited to get him back."
The next investigative steps for the House Intelligence Committee remain unclear. While Democrats have not ruled out issuing a subpoena to hear testimony from former national security adviser John Bolton, for instance, Democratic leaders have been mum about whether they plan to go that route.
Judge may hold Mueller-ensnared Russia firm in contemptMike Nova's Shared Newslinks

The special counsel filed charges in February 2018 against the St. Petersburg-based company and two other Russian businesses, as well as 13 Russian individuals, claiming that together they financed and organized an army of internet trolls that worked to sow discord among American voters and sway the last presidential campaign in Trump’s favor.
Only Concord has stepped forward to fight the charges in court, hiring a U.S.-based law firm to mount its defense. The company is controlled by Yevgeniy Prigozhin, a Russian oligarch with close ties to the Kremlin and known as “Putin’s chef” because his restaurants and catering business have hosted dinners for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Thursday’s order from Friedrich sides with the federal prosecutors who inherited the Concord case from Mueller’s since-shuttered investigation. The judge scheduled a Monday hearing on the issue and also ordered the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, D.C., to make public a redacted version of its initial motion spelling out its reasons for why Concord didn’t comply with its pretrial document demands.
Couple Buys Paul Manafort’s Trump Tower Condo for Nearly $3 Million – NBC New YorkMike Nova's Shared Newslinks

Paul Manafort's swanky Trump Tower condominium, which was forfeited to the federal government following his guilty plea in 2018, has been sold to a couple from California, property records show.
The property sale was recorded with the city of New York mid-morning Thursday. It was sold at auction by the U.S. Marshals Service.
The unidentified couple bought the ex-presidential campaign manager's chic digs for $2,92,925, well below the initial $3.6 million asking price, and have placed the property in their trust. They also took out a mortgage on it.

Local

The couple has not donated to any federal political candidate in the last 10 years.
The Trump Tower condo, at 1,509 square feet, is smaller than the 2,061 square-foot SoHo loft Manafort also gave up, but boy does it come with a view.
As the listing read, "Towering high above Manhattan's 5th Avenue and Central park the unit known as 43G has large rooms, hardwood floor, crown moldings, wood paneling and 1509 S.F of luxurious living space. Currently configured as a one bedroom it can easily be converted to a two bedroom with a private bath. The views from the 43rd floor are spectacular and phenomenal overlooking Central Park, and down 5th Avenue towards the Empire state building."
Manafort agreed to forfeit the Fifth Avenue property, along with four others, after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian election interference. He is currently serving a seven-and-a-half-year federal prison sentence in Pennsylvania for bank fraud, tax and conspiracy.

Ex-FBI unit chief blows whistle on Comey, McCabe over warrantless spying

The FBI agent who ran the bureau’s warrantless spying program said Wednesday he warned ex-Director James Comey and his deputy, Andrew McCabe that the program was a useless waste of taxpayer money that needlessly infringed Americans’ civil liberties but his bosses refused to take action.
Retired Special Agent Bassem Youssef ran the FBI’s Communications Analysis Unit from late 2004 until his retirement in late 2014. He told Just the News he fears the deeply flawed program, which was started in response to the Sept. 11 attacks, was allowed to keep going to give Americans a false sense of security in the war on terror and possibly to enable inappropriate spying, such as that which targeted President Trump’s 2016 campaign.
“I have no doubt, or very little doubt, that it was used for political spying or political espionage,” Youssef said during a lengthy interview for the John Solomon Reports podcast.
Youssef confirmed that the FBI performed an audit of the highly classified program (also known as the NSA program because it searched call records captured by the National Security Agency) after Edward Snowden leaked its existence.
The audit showed that while the program had generated two moderate leads for counterterrorism cases, it had not helped thwart dozens of terrorism attacks as officials had claimed, despite costing tens of millions of dollars per year.
In fact, the program was generating large numbers of “false negatives and positives,” Youssef said.
The audit, he added, also showed “there was collateral damage in terms of civil liberties” of Americans whose phone records were unnecessarily searched or who were falsely identified as connected to terrorism.
Youssef said he discussed the concerns with McCabe both when McCabe served as assistant director for counterterrorism and then when he was promoted to acting executive assistant director, the No. 3 job in the bureau. But his efforts to pause the program and reform it so it could work better, cost less, and infringe less on American privacy fell on deaf ears, he said.
When McCabe was acting executive assistant director, “I explained to him again, the model that I was looking to establish and to let him know that we were not really getting good support from this program, and that maybe we should reconsider this whole thing, unless we can re-tweak it,” Youssef recalled. “And I remember, he was so adamant about, we need this program. We're keeping it as this, even though we're not getting anything out of it.”
Asked why the FBI would keep a program that was not producing any terrorism leads, Youssef said: “It was a way to say, you know, it's an insurance policy to show that we're doing everything we can, when in fact it wasn't giving us anything of what we hoped it would get.”
FBI and DOJ declined comment on Wednesday. Lawyers for Comey and McCabe also did not respond to requests for comment.
Youssef said that in September 2014, shortly before he retired, he was invited to brief Comey privately about his concerns in the director’s office.
“It was a very lengthy briefing,” Youssef recalled. “He was very interactive. He asked very good questions. And after I explained everything to him, his only concern was not that we should shut it down, or that we should change it so that we can protect civil liberties … his concern was, do you have a problem or concerns with the statutory authority?”
Youssef recalls explaining that while he had no reservations about the legal authority of the surveillance, which had to be approved by FISA court judges, he had serious concerns about both the “waste of human resources” inherent in the “hundreds of thousands of agent hours in the field” lost to the labor-intensive program and the threat the program posed to civil liberties.
“Unless we change it to a different model,” Youssef recalls telling Comey, “we're going to continue to get many false positives and false negatives. And you can imagine with a false positive, we would be knocking on people's doors who have nothing to do with any kind of terrorism act.”
Youssef said he had “no doubt whatsoever” that McCabe and Comey understood the severity of the problems. “I gave them the full monty brief,” he said. “I explained everything to them. They were fully briefed on the program.”
Youssef first publicly raised concerns about the warrantless spying program during a 2018 interview with me at The Hill. But his comments Wednesday went much further, prompted by the release of a White House civil liberties board report that showed the same problems Youssef flagged in 2014 to Comey and McCabe persisted for nearly five more years.

But his comments Wednesday went much further, prompted by the release of a White House civil liberties board report that showed the same problems Youssef flagged in 2014 to Comey and McCabe persisted for nearly five more years.
Youssef was one of the FBI’s early counterterrorism success stories, working on major cases like the World Trade Center bombing and the Khobar Tower bombings and singled out for praise by former Director Louis Freeh. But after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, he was sidelined in a Human Resources dispute with bosses, sued the FBI, and eventually was restored as a supervisor running the CAU unit that oversaw the warrantless spying program.
The New York Times reported Wednesday that even after the Obama-era audit flagged serious concerns, the FBI kept operating the program until President Trump shut it down in 2019. Between 2015 and 2019 the program only generated two more leads, the newspaper reported, citing the White House report.
“That's probably what grieves me more than anything,” Youssef said. “Here we have a program that was not doing what it should. It was leaked. And the Obama administration very quickly appointed a privacy and civil liberties board to look into this. And we were mandated to give, we called it the options paper. And so my option was really the one that would give us the best intelligence at the lowest cost while minimizing the false positive and false negative intelligence. And so it makes perfect sense that this would be adopted. And yet, the director basically didn't do anything with it.”
Youssef said he has developed deep concerns since his retirement that the NSA program may have been abused, like the FISA warrants, during the Russia collusion probe of the Trump campaign that included a highly flawed Foreign Intelligence Surveillance warrant against Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
"There is no doubt in my mind now, looking at the backdrop and the information that has come up since 2016 in the media, that the abuses were rampant,” he said, “and not just for the FISA process, the FISA program, but for other programs that were used to spy on the Trump campaign. That to me is almost the obvious conclusion of what I've seen.
There is “a high probability that that program was used to handpick selected targeted numbers for purposes other than fighting terrorism,” Youssef believes. “It’s kind of a mirror image of the FISA abuses on Carter Page. As you know, it came out much later that the FISA process was for counterintelligence and counterterrorism purposes only. That was not what they used it for on Carter Page. And so it's sort of the same type of situation with this other program. I have no doubt, or very little doubt that it was used for political spying or political espionage.”.

In one of the worst shootings in Wisconsin history, a gunman killed five people — and then himself — during a rampage Wednesday afternoon on the Milwaukee campus of Molson Coors.

The shooter was identified as a 51-year-old man who worked for the brewery. The identities of the victims and the shooter were not released pending notification of their families. Multiple law enforcement sources initially reported seven people had died.
All of the shooting victims died. There were no reports of injuries.

Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said at an early evening press conference that police were checking on the whereabouts of more than 1,000 employees. "We have to check off employees one by one," he said.
“This is a time for us to think about those families because there were five individuals who went to work today, just like everyone goes to work, and they thought they were going to go to work, finish their day and return to their families," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said at the press conference. "They didn’t, and tragically they never will.”

Tony Evers said: "The hearts of the people of Wisconsin go out to the folks that were needlessly murdered."
Molson Coors CEO Gavin Hattersley said in an email to employees that the Milwaukee office will close for the rest of the week and the brewery will remain shut down for "the time being to ensure our people have time to cope with today's events."
Ald. Russell Stamper, whose district includes the Molson Coors brewery, offered condolences to the victims and their co-workers.
“The vile and heinous deadly violence that was perpetrated at the brewery complex today has no place in our society and makes no sense,” Stamper said in a statement. “The cold disregard for human lives and the lack of value for human life that was shown must be categorically denounced across Milwaukee, across Wisconsin and throughout our nation.”
Indeed, the tragedy not only made national, but international news.
At the start of a White House press conference on coronavirus, President Donald Trump extended his condolences "to the families in Milwaukee where a wicked murderer opened fired in a Molson Coors brewing company plant."
"It’s a terrible thing. Our hearts go out to the people of Wisconsin," the president said.

'Get some more med units here'

Police were called to the complex where beer has been brewed for more than a century at 2:08 p.m. Ten minutes later, employees were notified by email that an active shooter was in or near the second-floor stairwell of the sprawling factory’s Building 4.
The shooter was armed with two handguns, one with a silencer, according to a police source. Silencers or suppressors are legal in 42 states, including Wisconsin. They must be registered with the federal government under the National Firearms Act. According to the latest report from the ATF, more than 29,333 are registered in the state.
Crime involving the devices is relatively rare, according to an often-cited study that said about 150 cases involving silencers were prosecuted in federal court from 1995 to 2004.

Fire Department emergency radio broadcasts from Broadcastify captured the first chaotic minutes when emergency responders arrived at the brewery at 4115 W. State St., painting a vivid picture of the horrific scene.
"I just overheard on the radio seven — seven — victims. We might want to get some more med units here," a fire commander said over the radio, repeating the number that other sources also reported.
"Start building rescue task forces," another fire commander ordered.
Then a third commander came on the radio.
"I just had a police officer inform me that the shooter committed suicide and (the officer) believes they have six victims besides the shooter," the third commander reported to dispatchers.
Shortly after that, a Fire Department commander called more paramedic units.
"Start the casualty collection point and let's start working on getting med rigs (paramedic units) in here," the commander said over the radio.
Paramedic units from Milwaukee and West Allis were dispatched, along with officers, some wearing ballistic gear, from the FBI, ATF, Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, Marquette University Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service.
Police blocked off the scene at North 35th and West State streets. Highway 175 was also closed at West State and Vliet streets.
The sheriff's department held all of its day shift officers, including deputies responsible for patrolling Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, on duty beyond the scheduled end of their shifts.
At 4:45 p.m., police reported there was no longer a threat but the brewery was still an active crime scene. By 5:30 p.m., employees who had been kept inside for more than three hours were allowed to leave the business.
"People are just going home to be with their families," said Anthony Rainey, international representative of the United Auto Workers union that represents some of the plant's workers.

Businesses, schools on lockdown

For much of the late afternoon, the brewery was on lockdown, as were nearby businesses and schools.
Employees inside Molson Coors frantically got in contact with those on the outside. James Boyles said his wife, Lasonya Ragdales, told him by text that she was locked in a room with co-workers. She works in the claims department.
One employee who asked that his name not be used told the Journal Sentinel he works in the corporate office about 200 yards from the brewery.
“We were sitting in our office and some of our co-workers started getting up and gathering at the windows and we see law enforcement with their guns drawn running towards the brewery," he said.
"Then we get this blast email confirming what is going on, that there’s an active shooter. And then managers were walking around, taking people into rooms across the building, away from the brewery."
A 23-year old Shorewood man said he arrived a half hour early for a 3 p.m. job interview but was turned away by a police officer who told him to call his contact at Miller. When he called, the contact sounded on the verge of tears and said there had been an active shooter incident.
The man, who did not want to give his name, was shaken up by the experience. He had been given the option of a 2 or 3 p.m. interview time slot. If he’d chosen the earlier time, he said, he would have been inside during the shooting.
“I guess I made the right decision,” he said. “It’s scary to think I was so close to being inside the building at that time.”
At Story Elementary School, 3815 W. Kilbourn Ave., a teacher was seen comforting a visibly shaken mother terrified that her children were in danger. She had rushed to the school after hearing the news.
At Woodlands School, 3121 W. State St., Andre Kimbrough said he, along with many other parents, went to pick up their children at the end of school around 3:15 p.m., but got a call from school officials about the lockdown. Many parents circled the block waiting for an all-clear.
Kimbrough said he could see a "stream of police cars," ambulances and fire trucks. He felt good that the kids were safe inside.
"I'm more worried about how they feel," Kimbrough said. "They must be kind of freaking out."
A worker who answered the phone at Highland Educational Academy, a private group child care center at 4212 W. Highland Blvd., said around 3 p.m. that they released children as normal.
"Thank God, it's not us," she said.

Other mass shootings in Wisconsin

In the last 20 years, Wisconsin has been the scene of 11 mass murders.
The worst was in 2005, when seven people were killed and four wounded at a Living Church of God service at the Sheraton Hotel in Brookfield. The shooter, a 44-year-old computer technician, then killed himself.
A year earlier, a Minnesota man killed six people while deer hunting in northern Wisconsin.
In 2007, two mass shootings happened just months apart. In June, five people were killed in Delavan when a man shot his twin sons, his wife, her sister, a friend, and then himself. In October, six were killed when a Forest County Sheriff's Deputy went on a rampage at his ex-girlfriend's apartment.
Two mass shootings also happened in 2012. In August, six were killed at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek by a shooter who committed suicide. And in October, three were killed at Azana Salon & Spa in Brookfield.

About Molson Coors

“Miller Valley” features a 160-year-old brewery, with a packaging center that fills thousands of cans and bottles every minute and a distribution center the size of five football fields. A massive red Miller sign towers over the complex and is a well-known symbol in Milwaukee, where beer and brewing are intertwined in the city’s history.
The facility is also home to corporate customer service, finance, human resources and engineering. Tours take people to underground caves where beer was once stored, a saloon with intricate woodwork, a stein hall with stained-glass windows, a champagne room meeting hall with leaded-glass windows, and an outdoor beer garden that can hold 300 people.
Molson Coors Beverage Co., which operates MillerCoors, on Oct. 30 announced plans to close a Denver office and Opinion | The Real Trump-Russia Quid Pro Quo - The New York TimesMike Nova's Shared Newslinks

Trump Campaign Sues New York Times for LibelMike Nova's Shared Newslinks

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

“A publisher cannot be held liable for commentary based on public facts,” said Brian Hauss, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union.
Frederick Schauer, a law professor at the University of Virginia, said public figures who sue for libel must show that a publisher either “knew it was false before publishing, or had actual suspicion of falsity and went ahead anyway.” Proving that in court, he said, “is virtually impossible.”
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the Trump campaign by Charles J. Harder, a lawyer with a reputation for waging aggressive legal battles against prominent news organizations.
Mr. Harder is best known for representing Terry G. Bollea, the former professional wrestler known as Hulk Hogan, in a lawsuit against Gawker Media that was secretly underwritten by the tech investor Peter Thiel. The suit, which concerned the publication of a sex video, resulted in a $140 million decision that led to Gawker Media’s bankruptcy and forced the site’s sale.
Mr. Harder also represented Melania Trump, Mr. Trump’s wife, when she sued The Daily Mail, a British tabloid, in 2016 over what she said were “false and defamatory statements,” including that a modeling agency she worked for in the 1990s was also an escort service. The Daily Mail ultimately apologized, retracted the article and paid damages in a settlement.
This is not Mr. Trump’s first time going to court against a journalist. In 2006, he sued Timothy L. O’Brien for libel after the publication of Mr. O’Brien’s biography, “TrumpNation: The Art of Being the Donald.” The case was dismissed three years later. (Mr. O’Brien, who previously worked as a reporter and editor at The Times, is a senior adviser to Michael R. Bloomberg’s presidential campaign.)
The Times is also defending itself in a defamation suit brought by Sarah Palin, the former Republican vice-presidential nominee, over an editorial published in the Opinion pages that incorrectly linked her to a 2011 mass shooting that severely wounded Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona. Ms. Palin’s case was dismissed by a Federal District Court, but an appellate court reinstated the suit last year.

In First Interview Since Departure, Russia's Former 'Gray Cardinal' Questions Existence Of Ukraine

Vladislav Surkov was once "the man" in the Kremlin -- the "gray cardinal" and ideologist and who oversaw Ukraine policy during the now six-year war that has killed more than 13,000, displaced more than 1 million, and ruptured ties between Moscow and the West.
Beginning with the February 2014 street protests that forced Ukraine's president to flee to Russia and leading to what is widely considered the worst war in Europe in decades, Moscow has consistently suggested that the government that assumed power in Kyiv was illegitimate. Ukrainian sovereignty over separatist-controlled areas of the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions was in question.
Surkov was central to this thinking before his surprise departure from the Kremlin was officially announced on February 18.
In an interview published on February 26, his first since leaving, to his mind the very idea of a Ukrainian state is open for debate. "There is no Ukraine. There is Ukrainian-ness," Surkov said. "That is, it is a specific disorder of the mind, sudden passion for ethnography, taken to its extremes."
"Local history there is so bloody. It's a muddle instead of a state...there is no nation. There is only a pamphlet: 'The Self-Styled Ukraine,' but there is no Ukraine. The only question is, is Ukraine already gone, or not just yet?" he was quoted as saying.
The interview was conducted by Aleksei Chesnakov, a longtime confidant of Surkov, and published on February 26 on the little-known Russian news site Actual Commentaries.
The comments elicited anger in Ukraine, whose forces have been pitted against Russia-backed separatist fighters.
"Surkov, with his pearls about Ukraine, looks like a self-hating 'strategist' who thinks more about himself than is wise, like that mutt trying to bark at an elephant, feeling his greatness in it," Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said in a response posted to Twitter. "Do not make noise, sir. Ukraine lives on, regardless of the idea of a retired chauvinist."
Kremlin Talking Points?
It's unclear to what extent Surkov's comments reflect an official Kremlin position, particularly considering that Surkov's departure from the Kremlin took place under a cloud. Some analysts suggest he may have been forced out as part of an informal deal with Ukraine's government in a bid to reinvigorate peace talks.
His replacement, with oversight of Kremlin's Ukraine policy, is Dmitry Kozak, a deputy head of administration under Putin and a longtime aide to the Russian leader.
But while Surkov is purportedly no longer speaking from the inner circle, his comments echo past remarks by Putin and other Russian government officials who have dismissed or mocked the idea of a fully sovereign and independent Ukraine, in part to undermine the aspirations of Ukrainians wanting closer relations with NATO and the European Union.
In 2008, Putin told U.S. President George W. Bush that "Ukraine is not a country," according to a memoir published years later by Bush's national-security adviser, Condoleezza Rice.
As recently as February 21, Putin suggested that Russia and Ukraine should unify. "Any integration of Russia and Ukraine, along with their capacities and competitive advantages would spell the emergence of a rival, a global rival for both Europe and the world," he told the state news agency TASS in an interview.
Moscow has long denied direct involvement in the Ukraine conflict, including supplying or equipping the militia fighters, despite substantial evidence to the contrary gathered by journalists, independent monitors and Ukrainian officials.
When Surkov's e-mail inbox was hacked and its contents leaked in 2016, the correspondence showed Surkov had direct hands-on involvement in the minutiae of how the separatist authorities tried to administer the territories under their control.
In November 2019, Dutch prosecutors investigating the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 released audio intercepts of phone calls, purportedly between local officials in eastern Ukraine. Surkov's name is mentioned repeatedly.
Managed Democracy
Surkov, who has dabbled in gangster-fiction novels and hip-hop lyrics, served as a close aide since the early part of Putin's term, when oversight of domestic politics was among his main duties. During that time, he adopted the term "sovereign democracy" or "managed democracy" to describe Russia's political system.
Domestic politics were shifted from his portfolio following Putin's return to the presidency in 2012, but analysts believe he's kept Putin's ear on many internal political matters.
In January, Putin unveiled proposals for a substantive change in the country's political system, shifting some presidential powers to parliament, and giving new legal authority to an advisory body called the State Council.
Putin also proposed eliminating language regarding consecutive presidential terms, sparking speculation on whether he might be angling to stay in power beyond the end of his final, six-year term in 2024.
In the interview, Surkov suggested that the constitutional amendments Putin proposed would reset the clock on presidential terms, meaning he could stay in power until 2036. "If, as a result [of the amendments], the powers of the president are somehow clarified...then the legal logic leads to the need to restart the countdown of the presidential terms. Because with new powers it will be like another institution of the presidency," he was quoted as saying. "The restrictions of the current presidency will not be able to apply to him."
"This is my private opinion, of course. But based on the experience of lawmaking," he said.
I'm A 'Ukro-Optimist'
Despite casting doubt on Ukraine's current sovereignty, Surkov said he considered himself optimistic for Ukraine' future. "Oddly enough, I'm an 'Ukro-optimist.' That is, I think that Ukraine does not yet exist. But over time, it will. Ukrainians are stubborn folks, they will make it happen," he said.
"However, what kind of Ukraine it will be, what its borders will be, and even, maybe, how many Ukraines there will be, these are open questions. And one way or another, Russia will have to participate in resolving these issues."
And he suggested that Ukrainians historically were upstarts who needed to be restrained by force. "Relations with Ukraine were never simple, even when Ukraine was part of Russia. Ukraine has always been troublesome for the imperial and Soviet bureaucracy," he was quoted as saying. "Forceful coercion for brotherly relations, this is the only method that has historically proven effective when it comes to Ukraine. I do not think that any other will be invented."
Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who was elected Ukraine's president last year in a landslide vote, has made resolving the conflict with Russia a priority. In December, he met in Paris with Putin for the first time to try and advance a peace framework known as the Minsk accords. The talks did not yield substantial progress, however.
Asked what he thought the prospects were for the eastern Ukrainian regions -- known as the Donbas and controlled largely by Russia-backed separatists -- Surkov signaled it was unlikely anytime soon.
"My imagination is not strong enough to imagine this," he was quoted as saying. "The Donbas does not deserve such humiliation. Ukraine does not deserve such an honor."
