“Network” («Сеть») allegedly was an anti-government anarchist organization active in Russia in 2015–2017. Its members were arrested in 2017 and sentenced on February 10, 2020 by the Russian military court in Penza to prison terms from six to 18 years.
According to Amnesty International's representative, the organisation itself had never existed;[1] earlier Amnesty International expressed concern about tortures and other ill-treatment used by FSB to extract confessions from the defendants.[2] Memorial Society from Moscow also claimed that the whole case was fabricated and politically motivated, and designated the accused as political prisoners.[3] The case of “Network” caused the wide protest movement in Russia.[4] Andrei Kolesnikov from the Carnegie Moscow Center went on to label the story of the “Network” as “the return of Stalinist Show Trials”.[5] | ||

 Russian President Vladimir Putin, who dreams of revenge for the collapse of the Soviet Union, will not hold in deep crisis Russia, where the population is more and more not quite the power. Единственное желание российского президента Владимира Путина и его близкого окружения – остаться у власти. Ради этого в турборежиме запущены изменения в Конституцию. Какую спецоперацию готовит Кремль – в интервью OBOZREVATEL рассказал политик и полковник ФСБ в отставке Геннадий Гудков.
– В России новые репрессии – пятерых молодых людей обвинили в терроризме, дав по 8-18 лет тюрьмы. Что это за маркер? – Российская правоохранительная система уже давно вышла за границы права, а с делом "Сеть" (дело об организации под названием "Сеть", арестовано 11 человек, которых признали участниками террористического сообщества и обвинили в подготовке волнений в России. – Ред.) пробила очередное дно. Я всегда говорю, что путинский режим, несмотря на его достаточную жесткость в применении силы против мирных митингов и уличных шествий, все-таки соблюдал какой-то минимальный баланс. Pussy Riot получили двушечку, как говорил Путин, Удальцову, которого обвиняли чуть ли не в подготовке революции, дали 4,5 года, плюс возможность работать в библиотеке. Но в июле-августе 2019 года жестокость резко возросла. Ребятам в Ростове за единичный пикет дали 6,5 колонии строгого режима, где сидят самые тяжкие преступники за самые тяжкие преступления. Теперь следующая ступенька дна – это дело "Сеть", высосанное из пальца и сфальсифицированное. Может быть, не все его герои белые и пушистые, но они точно непричастны ни к какому террористическому подполью и тем более не готовили никаких терактов. Лишь бы не было боли и издевательств. От судорог и сжатых челюстей крошатся зубы. Любая судорога – это маленькая часть боли для человека, которого пытают электрическим током. Я специально говорю об этом, чтобы люди понимали, что это такое.

Поэтому этих ребят из Пемзы показательно отправили в тюрьму на десятилетия, чтобы показать всем остальным, как жестоко будут расправляться даже с мыслью о создании чего-то против режима. Похожее происходило в 37-м году. Так что Россия идет к мрачной диктатуре и полицейскому режиму. Моральный уровень режима упал до плинтуса и будет падать дальше, скоро его все будут просто ненавидеть. Все видят несправедливость, жестокость, расправы над невинными, и в конечном итоге это приведет к серьезнейшему противостоянию. Путин и его группировка избрала путь – держаться до последнего, опираться на силу, жестокость, бесправие и произвол. Это очень опасный путь как для самого Путина, так и для 145 миллионов россиян. – Так Путин уходит или остается? – Думаю, что он никуда не уходит. – Для чего же тогда в таком бешеном темпе вносят непонятные изменения в Конституцию? Реальный турборежим. – Впервые за 20 лет я не понимаю Кремль. Что-то у них там произошло и потребовало таких быстрых действий. И это конституционная реформа – ошибка, которая загоняет Путина в капкан. Кремль каким-то кривым путем хочет изменить какие-то другие части Конституции, а послушная раболепская Дума все это утвердит. Не прописано ни одного законного основания, не проработано ни в одном нормативном акте – какая-то абракадабра. Проблема Путина этими поправками не решается. Все эти изменения притянуты за уши, понятно, что все будет нарушением клятвы президента, закона и президент, продливший себе срок таким образом, станет нелегитимным. Царь ненастоящий, как в фильме "Иван Васильевич меняет профессию". Чем кончается ненастоящий царь, мы тоже видели. Этим все в конечном итоге может закончиться и для Путина. – Так почему такая спешка-то? – Вот этого понять не может никто. Версий много. Мол, Путин готовится к 75-летию со Дня победы, чтобы мировые лидеры приехали к нему на праздник и легитимизировали эти его поправки в Конституцию. Или же намечается какая-то другая операция. Все это конспирологические версии и нет ни одного мало-мальского ответа, откуда такая спешка. Почему так быстро сменили правительство и это не дало рейтинга ни ему, ни Путину. Говорят, Медведеву сказали за день до этого: "Дима, ты больше не работаешь премьер-министром". А министры-то вообще узнали из сообщений… – Так это правда? – Да, это абсолютная правда. Некоторые узнали уже постфактум. Решение принимал Путин и еще несколько человек, которые и писали эти проекты. Наверняка, накануне все собрались у него на даче на Рублевке и в режиме отключенных телефонов принимали изменения в Конституцию. До того ежегодное послание Путина готовилось с гигантской помпой. Все утюги, паяльники, холодильники и прочие электроприборы должны были транслировать его на всех экранах домов и сараев. Но вдруг на кануне вечером 14 января объявили, что половина трансляций отменена. Почему все так быстро поменялось – никто не знает, даже мои знакомые, вхожие в кабинеты власти. Об этом знают на самом деле человек 5.

– Безусловно, за этим стоят силовики. Наиболее продвинутый из них – это Патрушев. Говорят, Вайно сейчас близок к Путину. Именно Путин тасует всю эту колоду и такими действиями он уже стал походить на позднего Ельцина и Брежнева. У Ельцина тоже не было никакого кадрового резерва, поэтому он брал поваров, охранников и всех, кого помнил лично в данный момент. Что-то похожее происходит с Путиным. – Вам не кажется, что эти изменения в Конституцию похожи на спецоперацию КГБ – запустить шум в одну сторону, а тем временем заниматься другими делами. – Думаю, начата другая спецоперация. На референдум должно прийти 50-70% людей и проголосовать как из ружья. Вот тогда Путин скажет: "Ну все отлично, пипл схавал, давайте теперь второй этап конституционной реформы. Назовите меня там верховным правителем, а в условиях переходного периода и вражеского окружения президентский срок может быть продлен еще на 6 лет. А дальше как понравится". Общество уже смирилось, протестующих сажают, плющат и дают непонятные сроки – в таких условиях можно принять все, вплоть до пожизненной власти. – Объединение России и Беларуси не получилось? – Думаю, нет и уже не получится. Был еще один вариант объединения России, Украины, Беларуси и Казахстана. Это была историческая мечта Путина, с которой он хотел войти в историю, как Бисмарк. Путин хотел стать выдающимся собирателем земель русских. Но с Украиной не получилось, и он решил создать единое государство с Лукашенко. Тот перепугался, ведь хочет сам царем быть, пусть и в 10-миллионном государстве. Первый парень на деревне лучше, чем второй или третий в России. Александр Григорьевич перепугался, побежал в другие места, тут его пригрел Помпео, мол, не волнуйся, вот тебе нефть пробная, мы тебя готовы обеспечить. И вообще, ты хороший парень, если будешь себя правильно вести. После этого хитрый Лукашенко поехал к Путину, они покатались на лыжах, но так ни до чего и не договорились. Я проезжал Беларусь несколько раз вдоль и поперек и я понял одно, что белорусы совершенно не готовы к союзу с Россией. Им это не надо, они ментально ближе в Европе. Думаю, как только Лукашенко уйдет, белорусы станут быстрее членами ЕС, чем Украина. Лукашенко прекрасно понимает, он может и согласиться на общее государство, но тогда как бы народ его не сковырнул. Так что объединения не будет. Лукашенко уже дал возможность людям собраться на площадях и люди открыто сказали: "Мы не хотим в Россию". А он включил дурака, мол: "Видите, я бы рад с вами, Владимир Владимирович, но народ у меня подымается, что я могу сделать?" Вариант с Беларусью накрылся, так что Путину нужно что-то придумывать. После первых поправок в Конституцию последует второй этап. – Почему все это делается за четыре года до окончания полномочий президента? – Ответа на этот вопрос не знает никто, кроме 5-6 человек в окружении Путина. Но они молчат. – Верхушка Кремля на самом деле очень жестокие и циничные? – Да, они мелочные, злобные, жестокие, мстительные, думают только о сохранении власти ради обогащения. У них две забавы: править вечно и купаться в роскоши, в деньгах и чтоб никто не посягал на их власть. Вот собственно это все, что решает путинское окружение на сегодняшний день. – К сожалению, пока все идет по негативному сценарию. Каждый год с Путиным, хуже предыдущего. Если раньше репрессии носили относительно мягкий характер, они были точечными, то сейчас речь уже идет о секторальных. Критики, активисты, блогеры подвергаются жестоким репрессиям. Все идет к массовым репрессиям и теперь ключевой вопрос: а будет ли власть стрелять в народ? – И что, будет? – Думаю, что да. Другими способами они народ в стойле не удержат. Все уже подготовлено: законодательство изменено, права силовых служб при применении боевого оружия расширены, суды готовы к штамповке приговоров. Власть готовится стрелять в народ и рано или поздно это произойдет. Вот тогда никакой мирной трансформации власти в России не будет. Думаю, Путин это очень хорошо понимает, пример Николая II еще не успел обрасти легендами. С момента, как семья императора была расстреляна, после того как он дал команду стрелять в народ, прошло всего лишь сто лет. Русский народ не выходит на разум, он выходит на эмоциях. For apparently the first time in modern history, a rabbi met with the king of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh last week.
King Salman hosted Jerusalem-based rabbi David Rosen in his royal palace in the Saudi capital, in a move indicative of the monarchy’s desire to further open itself up to the Western world. Rosen was born in England but moved to Israel years ago and is a member of the Israeli Chief Rabbinate’s Commission for Interreligious Dialogue. He spent two and a half days in the Saudi capital to attend a meeting of the King Abdullah International Center for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, where he is a member of the board of directors. Get The Times of Israel's Daily Edition by email and never miss our top stories Free Sign Up The Vienna-based center, known as KAICIID, was established eight years ago by the previous Saudi king, Abdullah, but no Saudi monarch has ever invited its board to the royal palace in Riyadh. “It was amazing. The experience was really something special,” Rosen told The Times of Israel this week. “And it was not just the meeting with the king. The most exciting thing was meeting young people and their sense of the transformation their country is undergoing.” Last week’s meeting was in fact the first-ever interfaith group hosted by King Salman, Rosen said. Just two years ago, the Saudi authorities “would not have contemplated inviting us, and primarily me as a rabbi. This would have been too much for then,” Rosen said. In this sense, the reception at the royal palace was a “revolutionary moment,” he added. Rosen, who serves as the American Jewish Committee’s director of interreligious affairs, was one of nine KAICIID board members who attended the meeting with King Salman, and the only one representing Judaism. The other eight represented Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. “The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques welcomed the board members, who were holding their first meeting in Riyadh, and stressed the importance of KAICIID’s role in consolidating the principles of dialogue and coexistence among different religions and cultures, promoting the values of moderation and tolerance, and combating all forms of extremism and terrorism,” the organization said in a press release. While his meeting with the king would likely not have been possible without the covert rapprochement between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Israel, the possibility of establishing bilateral ties was not discussed, Rosen said. “On the contrary: from the Saudi point of view, there was a desire to present me as a religious representative, a representative of the Jewish world and of the Jewish religion, and not as a representative of any specific political current,” he said. “I was presented to the king as representative of Jewish people and of Judaism, not in any particular national identity.” Rosen, who also served as communal rabbi in South Africa and as chief rabbi of Ireland, said that he got the impression that for the Israel-Saudi relationship to grow more formal, tangible progress needs to be made in the Israel-Palestinian peace process. “In all my conversations, there was the emphasis that there is still a glass ceiling. In other words: things can warm — and people want things to warm — but the symbolism of the Palestinian issue is still so significant that if there is no movement on that track, there always is going to be a limit to how much warming there can be,” he said. The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem declined to comment for this article. But its Arabic-language Twitter account tweeted a photo of the meeting. Joel C. Rosenberg, a Jerusalem-based Israeli Christian interfaith activist who traveled to Saudi Arabia in September, welcomed Rosen’s invitation to Riyadh. In September, Rosenberg, a dual US-Israeli citizen, led a delegation of American Evangelicals on a three-day tour to Jeddah, the second group of high-profile church figures he has brought to the conservative kingdom in recent years. The Conference of Presidents said the “very productive” visit was a “big step forward” in terms of Jerusalem-Riyadh relations. It declined to say who received the delegation.

More often than not they have been bitter geopolitical foes rather than friends. The fledgling — and now increasingly fragile — alliance that Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have been building, irking in the process Ankara’s NATO allies, has been rubbing against the grain of the history, say analysts.
If the two countries end up fighting each other over the fate of northern Syria, it would in fact be a return to their traditional historical enmity — one which has seen them wage war against each other in every century since the 16th. The first erupted in 1569 when the Ottoman army besieged the Volga delta town of Astrakhan, but was forced to retreat by the Russia’s Ivan the Terrible. In all but one of a subsequent series of wars, which were fought over access to the Black Sea, the ownership of the steppe lands of Ukraine and control of the Balkans, has Turkey come off worse, losing territory and influence as a consequence. The clashes in the 19th century shrunk the Ottoman Empire, dubbed the “sick man of Europe,” hastening its collapse, say historians. History says odds against Turkey Only in the Crimean War of 1854 to 1856 did the Turks triumph — and that was in large part thanks to the support they received from France and a reluctant Britain. “I despise the Turks for I consider their government the most evil and most oppressive in all the World,” George Hamilton-Gordon, the 4th earl of Aberdeen, and Britain’s prime minister, told friends during the war. Russian Czars, including Peter the Great and Catherine the Great, eagerly took advantage of Ottoman decline to encourage Balkan and Slav nationalism and to expand Russian territory in Central Europe and the Caucuses. In the war of 1768–1774, another conflict that saw Russian arms largely victorious against the Ottomans, Moscow grabbed part of Moldavia and Crimea as well as the Pontic–Caspian steppe, a vast swathe of land stretching from the northern shores of the Black Sea as far east as the Caspian Sea. And Russia emerged from the war as one of Europe’s primary military powers. But if the history of defeats should make Ankara highly wary in its standoff in northwestern Syria with the nuclear-armed Moscow and its client Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Western powers should also worry about what the possible wider and longer-term ramifications could be of a 21st-century Russo-Turkish military clash. The Crimean War, made infamous by the hubristic Charge of the Light Brigade and other dreadful military blunders and blessed by the nursing of Florence Nightingale, “set in train the succession of European wars and power-struggles which dominated the second half of the nineteenth century,” writes the British military historian Trevor Royle in his book “Crimea.” Those conflicts “paved the way for the greater conflagration of 1914,” the first of the 20th century’s shattering worldwide conflicts, he adds. As with the Crimean War, so, too, one now between Moscow and Ankara would likely threaten the stability of Europe. Analysts say a war between Russia and Turkey could place NATO in a difficult and possibly terminal dilemma. The Article Five dilemma Ankara, they say, would likely invoke the principle of collective defense enshrined in Article Five of NATO’s founding treaty. The article says the alliance sees an attack on one member as an attack on all and is the very bedrock of the alliance and reason for the alliance’s existence. Doubts have already been cast in recent years by NATO members about their commitment to Article Five, leaving a cloud of ambiguity hanging over the principle of the bloc’s collective defense pledge. U.S. President Donald Trump has at times questioned whether he would be prepared to respond to an Article Five appeal, notably at a NATO summit in 2017 during which he refrained from explicitly endorsing the principle of mutual aid. Two weeks later, Mr. Trump reversed course, saying in impromptu remarks that the U.S. would indeed come to the defense of a NATO ally. But in an interview with Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson in 2018 the U.S. leader equivocated again on whether Washington would come to a NATO ally’s defense, if attacked, citing as an example the Balkan country of Montenegro, which has recently joined the military alliance, and worrying aloud that Montenegro might unleash a third world war. Not just Trump But President Trump isn’t the only Western leader to question Article Five, which has only been invoked once, in 2001 after the September 11 terror attacks. In November, France’s Emmanuel Macron sounded less than enthusiastic about the collective-defense pledge. When asked in an interview with Britain’s The Economist magazine whether he believed in the effectiveness of Article Five, he replied: “I don't know,” adding, but what will Article Five mean tomorrow?” In a poll conducted this month by the Pew Research Center, many in alliance member countries expressed reservations about fulfilling collective-defense obligations. The Center reported that despite NATO’s largely favorable ratings among member states, there is widespread skepticism about Article Five. When asked if their country should defend a fellow NATO ally against a potential Russian attack, a median of 50% across 16 NATO member states say their country should not, compared with 38% who said their country should abide by Article Five. Ankara would likely threaten to open the refugee floodgates once again, if NATO failed to leap to Turkey’s defense, say analysts, risking further intolerable strain on EU solidarity. But there is little enthusiasm for Erdoğan among Europe’s leaders, who have chafed at Turkey’s slide towards authoritarian rule and bristled at the Turkish leader’s playing habit of playing Europe off against Russia and vice versa in his efforts to get what he wants. The rising tensions between Moscow and Ankara is not a surprise to Jonathan Schanzer, analyst at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, a Washington-based think tank. Last month, in an interview with VOA, he predicted that the Russian-Turkish relationship is weighted with geopolitical conflicts that risked undermining it. “The Turks have been gravitating to the Russians, even as their vision of Syria directly conflicts with that of Putin,” he said. He forewarned that the fledgling partnership risked collapse because of the grandness of the geopolitical ambitions of the two key players, Putin and Erdoğan, with one wanting to revive Russia as a superpower, and the other envisaging restoration of Ottoman greatness. | ||

The Carnival of Aalst (Dutch: Carnaval Aalst, local dialect: Carnaval Oilsjt) or Aalst Carnival is a yearly three-day event in the Belgian city of Aalst. It was formerly recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The carnival is celebrated in the days preceding Ash Wednesday. It is mainly a street happening; the celebrants dance on the city squares and visit café after café.
In December 2019, the mayor of Aalst, Christoph D'Haese (N-VA), applied to UNESCO to have his city's carnival removed from the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, pre-empting its expected removal for ongoing use of anti-Semitic stereotypes.[1] On 13 December 2019, UNESCO withdrew its recognition of Aalst Carnival as part of the cultural heritage of humanity.[2][3] | ||

WASHINGTON, Feb 23 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Sunday he is looking for a new ambassador to Germany after tapping current diplomat Richard Grenell to serve as acting U.S. intelligence chief. “I’ll be appointing an ambassador to Germany,” Trump told reporters at the White House before departing on a trip to India. A senior administration official told Reuters last week that Grenell would remain as ambassador even as he took up the post of acting director of national intelligence, a position that oversees the 17-agency U.S. intelligence community. It is unclear how long Grenell will serve as the top intelligence official. Trump said on Sunday he was considering five candidates to take on the role on a permanent basis, and Grenell said on Thursday he would not be taking the job. “At a certain point in the not too distant future, we’ll be announcing who they are,” Trump said.
