3:22 AM 10/28/2019 - M.N. - My Memo to the FBI:

Go get the Mob, this is the alpha and omega of everything; and most importantly, get the analysis of the root causes right.

"Trump presidency is metastasizing rapidly into a right-wing authoritarian regime, with distinctly fascist characteristics..." M.N.: This appears to be the correct observation. But the analysis of causes is the habitual socialist theorizing, unscientific and non-convincing.

Attention, FBI: It is necessary to analyse, determine and define the true root causes. And in my opinion, these causes although complex, can be expressed in just one term: TOC, the Transnational Organized Crime, in its various forms and ways; and very likely, the New Abwehr behind them, also in my opinion, as novel and unconventional this thought may be.

This area, subject, and the opponent, the TOC, is the direct concern and the focus of the FBI work for the last several decades. This phenomenon, in its historical, cultural, military, and intelligence services perspectives, has to be understood correctly, to be dealt with it efficiently.

The $18 mil figure in the FBI budget, if I understand it correctly, is for the anti-Mob activities. Is this amount adequate, considering that the Mob spends billions in their fight against the state structures?

This area needs cardinal reassessment, again, in my humble opinion.

How killing a terrorist affects the impeachment inquiry into Trump

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

Far from shying away from criticism of Trump as he announced the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pointed out the President didn't officially brief Congress as is the custom, but did tell the Russians something was coming.
This will do nothing to ease tensions.
Donald Trump now vs. Barack Obama in 2011
We'll hear a lot in the coming days about whether Trump should have done more to keep Congress in the loop and what the law actually requires. Before the Osama bin Laden raid, key members of Congress
knew about surveillance of the al Qaeda leader
and knew something might be coming, but did not know specific details as the raid was happening.
The difference now is that impeachment has poisoned any kind of relationship Trump has with Democrats, meaning two branches of government essentially aren't talking to each other.
Some Republicans were informed
It emerged that Republicans in the Senate knew the operation was coming, including Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a key Trump ally who gave a press conference at the White House Sunday.
Trump has faced criticism in his own party for his strategy of pulling US forces from Syria and giving space to Russia and Turkey. The Baghdadi killing likely won't fundamentally change the US retreat from its Kurdish allies or the growth of Russian control in Syria. But it might, for now, quiet some of the Republican frustration with Trump. Graham, who had been extremely critical of Trump on Syria, was all in as a cheerleader during his press conference from the White House briefing room Sunday.
Other Republicans, like Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, were praising Trump over the weekend.
The Russians were also informed
The President said the following:
"We spoke to the Russians. We told them we were coming in. And they said thank you for telling us. They were very good."
He said the US did not tell the Russians WHY the special operators were coming in.
"We did tell them, we think you're going to be very happy because, you know, again, they hate ISIS as much as we do. You know what ISIS has done to Russia. So, no, we did not tell -- they did not know the mission, but they knew we were going over an area that they had a lot of fire power. "
Democrats were not informed
Trump on telling Congress:
"We were going to notify them last night, but we decided not to do that because Washington leaks like I've never seen before. There's nothing -- there's no country in the world that leaks like we do. And Washington is a leaking machine. And I told my people, we will not notify them until the -- our great people are out. Not just in, but out. I don't want to have them greeted with fire power like you wouldn't believe. So we were able to get in. It was top secret."

Former official challenges impeachment subpoena in court

The White House has made clear that it won't be cooperating with the impeachment inquiry. That hasn't stopped current and former officials from complying with congressional subpoenas.
That's about to change.
Charles Kupperman
, the former acting national security adviser scheduled to testify Monday, has been subpoenaed by House Democrats, who are threatening to find him in contempt of Congress. But he's been instructed not to testify by White House lawyers.
Kupperman filed a lawsuit essentially asking courts for guidance.
The arguments -- Is he "immune from congressional process" as White House lawyers contend or can he testify and avert a "contempt of congress" citation?
Test case for John Bolton -- The implications are bigger than Kupperman. He shares a lawyer with John Bolton, the former national security adviser who compared Trump's shadow foreign policy operation to a "drug deal."
Democrats shot back in a legal filing over the weekend that Kupperman was trying "to delay and obstruct the lawful constitutional functions of Congress and conceal evidence about his conduct from the impeachment inquiry."

The upshot of this weekend's investigative moves

Who's on deck?

Impeachment investigators are
 set in the coming
days to hear from several State Department officials and, later in the week, Alexander Vindman, the National Security Council's top expert on Ukraine, and Tim Morrison, the National Security Council's top adviser on Russian issues.

John Kelly says he tried to prevent all of this

Former White House chief of staff John Kelly told the Washington Examiner he gave Trump an important piece of advice before leaving his old post.
"I said whatever you do, don't hire a 'yes man,' someone who won't tell you the truth -- don't do that," Kelly said. "Because if you do, I believe you will be impeached."
Kelly's successor, acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney is at the center of Trump's decision to freeze US funding to Ukraine in exchange for launching political investigations that could benefit Trump.

How's it polling?

CNN's Harry Enten writes:
The bottom line is that the electoral implications of impeachment are currently far less favorable to Democrats in the swing states that are likely to determine next year's presidential election than the national polls indicate. For Trump, this is good news. For the Democratic presidential candidates, it suggests more caution may be needed in articulating an impeachment position than the national polls indicate.

14 October 2019
President Donald Trump’s response to the impeachment inquiry initiated by Congress has assumed an openly fascistic character. In his speeches last week in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Lake Charles, Louisiana, Trump appealed openly to xenophobia, racism and anti-Semitism. He incited his audience of police and other rightwing forces against his political opponents, whom he denounced as “far left” and “socialist” politicians who “hate America.”
In a manner unprecedented in American history, Trump is seeking to utilize the power of the presidency to create a dictatorial regime. Contemptuous of all constitutional restraints, Trump is making it clear that he is prepared to use criminal and violent methods to hang on to power. In his Minneapolis tirade, he shouted that he intends to remain in office for “16 more years,” which would not be possible without the overthrow of the US Constitution. He has made no secret of the violent implications of his illegal claims to personal dictatorship, declaring that any moves to displace him will lead to “civil war.” Trump’s statement that his political opponents are guilty of “treason” evokes the specter of arrests and murderous proscriptions.
In a particularly ominous passage of his speech on Thursday, Trump defended his decision to remove troops from Syria by declaring, “We’re bringing the soldiers home. We may need them for something else, and they’ll be ready.” In the context of his assertion of dictatorial powers, this “something else” is a clear threat to use the military against domestic opposition within the United States. The White House has already begun to do this by mobilizing troops to enforce its brutal attacks on immigrants along the US-Mexico border.
To downplay, let alone deny, the fact that the Trump presidency is metastasizing rapidly into a right-wing authoritarian regime, with distinctly fascist characteristics, is to close one’s eyes to political reality. The old refrain, “It can’t happen here”—i.e., that American democracy is eternally immune from the cancer of fascism—is hopelessly out of date. The very fact that a thug like Trump ascended to the White House testifies to the terminal crisis of the existing political system.
Trump’s administration is the product of the deep-rooted economic and social contradictions of American capitalism. The massive concentration of wealth within the richest one percent of the population and the unprecedented level of social inequality are incompatible with traditional democratic forms of rule. Over the past four decades, the United States has evolved into an increasingly oligarchic society. Isolated from the great mass of the population, viewing every demand for an improvement of conditions of life as a threat to its wealth, the oligarchy is increasingly hostile to democracy.
Trump, the product of New York’s financial underworld, articulates, with the necessary crudity and vulgarity, the authoritarian impulses of the oligarchy. His hysterical denunciations of socialism and communism voice the growing fear of the rich that demands for social reform will lead inevitably to a massive redistribution of wealth, culminating in the expropriation of capitalist property.
In its very foundation, the Trump administration has epitomized the negation of democracy. His presidency has been, from the very beginning, illegitimate. Through the anti-democratic mechanism of the Electoral College, Trump was elected despite having lost the popular vote by nearly three million ballots. Far from acknowledging the minority status of his administration, Trump acts as if he was swept into office in a landslide. But he knows full well that his policies—for all his cynical populist demagogy—evoke massive popular opposition.
Trump’s appearances before police, security personnel and military audiences, as well as his carefully staged mass rallies designed to attract politically disoriented and backward elements, are all part of a calculated effort to create a political constituency upon which he can base an authoritarian regime, operating outside all of the traditional legal boundaries of the US Constitution.
American democracy has come to a historic crossroads. As it seeks to maintain power, the Trump presidency will assume an increasingly illegal, authoritarian and violent character.
The removal of this administration from power is a political necessity. But by whom and through what methods this objective is achieved is a life-and-death question.
Up until now, the official opposition to Trump has been dominated by the Democratic Party. The impeachment inquiry is the outcome of the increasingly bitter factional struggle within the ruling class. Basing itself on disaffected sections of the intelligence agencies, the military and the corporate-financial elite, the Democratic Party is employing the methods of a palace coup.
Trump’s opponents within the state apparatus are acutely conscious of the implications of the long-term decline in the global position of the United States. They view Trump’s foreign policy as erratic and unpredictable and, particularly with regards to Russia and Syria, in conflict with what they consider key geostrategic imperatives of American imperialism. It is for this reason that they have centered opposition on matters of foreign policy, first through the anti-Russia campaign and now on the basis of Trump’s telephone call with the Ukrainian president.
The social and political interests motivating the opposition to Trump within the state determine its methods. While Trump is responding to the impeachment by seeking to develop a right-wing movement, the Democrats are determined to avoid anything that would mobilize popular anger against Trump. In this sense, Trump displays a far greater grasp of political realities than his opponents, who are always looking over their shoulders, fearful of anything that will ignite the explosive social conflicts within the United States.
This is why the impeachment inquiry is being conducted entirely behind closed doors and is confined to conflicts over imperialist foreign policy. It also explains the schizophrenic and hypocritical character of the Democrats’ attitude to the Trump administration, which has alternated between hysterical denunciations of the president for undermining “national security” and functioning as an agent of the Putin government, with efforts to collaborate with Trump on critical elements of domestic policy.
However bitter their disagreements, all factions of the ruling class are agreed on the destruction of social programs, the assault on wages and benefits, the attack on immigrants, the destruction of democratic rights, and the massive buildup of the military. In the midst of their conflicts, the Democrats passed Trump’s record budget for defense spending and smoothed the way for his tax cuts for the wealthy.
So long as the conflict is confined to the divisions within the ruling class, there can be no democratic or progressive outcome. Should the impeachment drive of the Democrats fail, it will strengthen Trump’s political position. Should it succeed, it will elevate Trump’s factotum, Mike Pence, to the presidency. Moreover, impeachment will actually strengthen the political influence of the CIA and FBI over the White House. It will legitimize a foreign policy based on an anti-Russia hysteria that will justify a dangerous confrontation with a nuclear-armed power. Either outcome represents an immense danger to the working class.
The obsession of the Democratic Party and the media with former Vice President Joe Biden and Trump’s Ukraine phone call is a diversion. A mass movement for Trump’s removal requires that his real crimes be identified. Moreover, the defense of democratic rights must be clearly connected to the fight to advance the social interests of the working class, which comprises the overwhelming majority of the population.
Trump must be removed for the following reasons:
  • Trump is utilizing the power of the presidency to create an unconstitutional and illegal dictatorship.
  • Trump is using the military to carry out his domestic policies, including the construction of a wall along the border.
  • Trump is threatening to stay in power beyond constitutionally mandated term limits and has indicated that he will not accept as legitimate an election that leads to his defeat.
  • Trump is instigating violence against his political opponents and politically encouraging fascistic individuals who have carried out acts of mass murder directed at immigrants and Jews.
  • Trump is persecuting immigrants and refugees, including through the erection of concentration camps on the US-Mexico border.
  • Trump is encouraging the violent actions of the police, which are responsible for the deaths of more than 1,000 Americans every year.
  • Trump is threatening countries that defy US dictates with “annihilation,” in violation of international and domestic law.
  • Trump is equating opposition to capitalism with treason, in violation of constitutionally protected freedom of speech.
The fight against the Trump administration and the defense of the most basic democratic rights is a fight against capitalism and American imperialism, which must be conducted completely independent of and in opposition to the Democratic Party.
The United States is at the epicenter of a global crisis. Everywhere, democratic forms of rule are breaking down. In Germany, 75 years after the fall of the Third Reich, fascism is again a dangerous political force. In France, the government of Emanuel Macron has instituted rule by decree against growing social unrest. Britain is ruled by the fascistic Boris Johnson. In Brazil and India, far-right and extreme nationalist governments are in power.
Democratic rights are not compatible with a social system based on extreme inequality and endless war. The lesson of 1930s is that the fight against fascism and authoritarianism can be based only on an anti-capitalist and explicitly socialist program.
The methods required in this fight are the methods of the class struggle, and its objective is the establishment of a workers’ government to radically redistribute the wealth, place the giant corporations and banks under the democratic control of working people, and implement a planned economy based on social need, not private profit.
Mass struggles are on the agenda in the United States. Protest rallies, demonstrations and strikes will tend to acquire a general nation-wide character. The political conclusion that flows from this analysis is that the fight of the working class against Trump and all that he represents will raise ever more urgently the necessity of a political mass movement, independent of and opposed to both the Republicans and the Democrats, against the capitalist system and its state.
Mass struggles are no longer “on the agenda.” They have already begun and are intensifying. The past two years have seen many expressions of popular anger and working class opposition, in the United States and internationally.
In the US, the wave of teachers’ strikes over the past two years has been followed this year by the month-long strike by 48,000 GM workers, the longest strike of autoworkers in decades. As the trade unions have sought to shut down the GM strike, new strikes have been launched by 3,500 Mack Truck workers in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida, and 2,000 miners in Arizona and Texas. More than 20,000 teachers in Chicago could go on strike this week.
Herein lies the social power that can bring down Trump and expose his reactionary demagogy for what it is. Mass demonstrations and protests must be organized by workers and student youth against the Trump administration. The logic of this movement is toward a political general strike, which will raise the question of political power. The organization of such a movement requires the formation of an interconnected network of popular workplace and neighborhood committees to unite all sections of the working class, in opposition to the efforts of the trade unions to isolate and suppress workers’ struggles.
The fight against the Trump administration must be connected to the fight against social inequality, the destruction of social programs and infrastructure, the attack on jobs and wages, the terrible conditions facing an entire generation of young people, the vicious persecution of immigrant workers, the degradation of the environment, and the consequences of unending and expanding war, which threatens all of humanity. The opposition of workers and youth in the United States must be connected to the eruption of social struggles among workers throughout the world, who share the same interests and confront the same problems.
This objective movement must be guided by a conscious socialist program and perspective. The Socialist Equality Party and its youth organization, the International Youth and Students for Social Equality, are spearheading this fight. We call on all those who agree with this perspective to make the decision to join and build the SEP and its sister parties in the International Committee of the Fourth International throughout the world.

Court ruling declares House impeachment inquiry to be legal

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from World Socialist Web Site (en).

By Patrick Martin
28 October 2019
On Friday, the senior federal district judge in Washington D.C. upheld the legality of the House impeachment inquiry into President Trump and ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to turn over grand jury material that was redacted from the report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
The ruling by Judge Beryl A. Howell, an Obama appointee and the former counsel for the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, will very likely be appealed to the Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia and then to the Supreme Court. But it lays down, in occasionally sharp language, a rebuttal of the arguments made by the White House and congressional Republicans against the constitutionality of the impeachment inquiry.
Howell’s 75-page opinion refutes White House claims that the president is effectively above the law: that he cannot be subject to investigation or prosecution in state or federal courts (citing impeachment as the only legal avenue for addressing presidential misconduct), while at the same time refusing to cooperate with an impeachment investigation by the House of Representatives.
Howell wrote that the DOJ position “leaves the House as the only federal body that can act on allegations of presidential misconduct. Yet, under DOJ’s reading of Rule 6(e), the Executive Branch would be empowered to wall off any evidence of presidential misconduct from the House by placing that evidence before a grand jury.”
She cited in particular the letter sent October 8 by White House Counsel Pat A. Cipollone to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats declaring that executive branch officials would not provide testimony or documents to the impeachment inquiry because it was “illegitimate.” The judge characterized this position as “stonewalling.”
“The White House’s stated policy of noncooperation with the impeachment inquiry weighs heavily in favor of disclosure,” Judge Howell wrote. “Congress’s need to access grand jury material relevant to potential impeachable conduct by a president is heightened when the executive branch willfully obstructs channels for accessing other relevant evidence.”
Trump is unquestionably guilty of illegal and unconstitutional actions that justify his removal from office. These include the setting up of a network of concentration camps for immigrants, the deployment, in violation of the posse comitatus statute, of active duty troops to help police the border with Mexico, the enactment of a declaration of emergency to defy congressional control over spending and use Pentagon funds to build the border wall, and repeated defiance of judicial and congressional oversight powers on the presidency.
However, the Democrats are excluding these very real attacks on democratic rights from their impeachment inquiry. Instead, they are limiting it to allegations that Trump threatened U.S. national security, i.e., the international interests of American imperialism, in his July 25 telephone call to the president of Ukraine. In that call, Trump pressured Kiev to announce a corruption investigation involving his potential Democratic opponent in the 2020 election, former Vice President Joe Biden, while withholding $391 million in military aid to the country.
The Democrats are presenting this as yet another supposed capitulation to Russia, which is backing pro-Russian separatist forces in eastern Ukraine. They are carrying out their impeachment inquiry on the same right-wing basis on which they have opposed Trump from the outset, speaking for factions of the intelligence establishment and the military that demand a more aggressive military posture in Syria and the rest of the Middle East and a more belligerent confrontation with Moscow.
At the same time, they have up to now insisted that all impeachment hearings be held behind closed doors, highlighting the palace coup character of their opposition to Trump. The White House and congressional Republicans have seized on the secretive character of the proceedings to denounce the impeachment inquiry as illegitimate.
Friday’s ruling arises from the efforts by the House Judiciary Committee (HJC) to obtain grand jury material that was either redacted from the 448-page Mueller report or served as the basis for the report but was not included in its text and footnotes. This material could run to tens or hundreds of thousands of pages of sworn testimony by current and former Trump administration officials.
The committee sued after Attorney General William Barr refused to turn over the material, citing Rule 6(e) of federal court procedure, which makes grand jury material secret as a matter of standard practice. The committee’s lawyers argued that there was a longstanding exception to Rule 6(e) for congressional investigations leading to the impeachment of a president, because these would culminate in a Senate trial which was indisputably a “judicial proceeding.”
This exception was codified in the famous 1974 decision in Haldeman v. Sirica, in which the Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rebuffed efforts by President Nixon’s chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman, to block the handover of grand jury materials by Judge John J. Sirica to the House Judiciary Committee, which was considering articles of impeachment against Nixon.
In her ruling, Judge Howell said that the decision in the Haldeman case, and in a recent decision by the same court in McKeever v. Barr, upheld the principle that grand jury material had to be made available to a congressional impeachment inquiry.
She wrote: “Together, Haldeman and McKeever hold that an impeachment trial is a ‘judicial proceeding’ under Rule 6(e), and these decisions bind this Court…
“These decisions alone require ruling in HJC’s favor on the threshold requirement that an impeachment trial is a ‘judicial proceeding’ within the meaning of Rule 6(e). Indeed, in addition to Chief Judge Sirica and the Haldeman Court, every other court to have considered releasing grand jury material to Congress in connection with an impeachment investigation has authorized such disclosure.”
Howell suggested, in a particularly stinging footnote, that the Justice Department argument that its views on grand jury material had “evolved” was in bad faith because “in McKeever itself DOJ successfully argued—just last year—that the DC Circuit has treated Haldeman as standing only for the proposition that an impeachment proceeding may qualify as a ‘judicial proceeding’ for purposes of Rule 6(e).” She concluded, “The DOJ position has had a speedy evolution indeed.”
Judge Howell also rejected the argument made in a brief supporting the Trump administration position, filed by Representative Doug Collins, the ranking Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, that the impeachment inquiry was illegitimate because it had not been formally authorized by a vote of the House of Representatives.
“Even in cases of presidential impeachment, a House resolution has never, in fact, been required to begin an impeachment inquiry,” Howell wrote. “No governing law requires this test—not the Constitution, not House Rules, and not Rule 6(e), and so imposing this test would be an impermissible intrusion on the House’s constitutional authority.”
She noted that in 1998, during the impeachment inquiry begun by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives against Democratic President Bill Clinton, the House Judiciary Committee obtained grand jury material in July 1998, while the full House did not vote for an impeachment proceeding until three months later. So no such resolution was required, nor could the courts make such a determination, which was reserved to Congress by the text of the Constitution.
House Democrats immediately hailed the ruling, while the Justice Department said only that it would review the decision before any further action. The Trump administration has until October 30 to either hand over the grand jury material or file an appeal.
The ruling gives a green light to expand the House impeachment inquiry to include charges against Trump stemming from the Mueller investigation, either in relation to alleged collusion with Russia or obstruction of justice directed against the preliminary FBI investigation or the Mueller probe itself.

Then in October, users found that you could unlock a Pixel 4's facial unlock technology while you had your eyes closed, and a couple found that they could unlock Samsung S10 devices using fingerprint protection with any user's finger if the device was protected by a silicon case. The gaping hole in Democrats’ impeachment case and other commentary

Impeach watch: The Hole in the Dem Case
The Washington Examiner’s Byron York writes: “There’s no question House Democrats are determined to impeach President Trump. Some have been trying since shortly after his inauguration.” Yet their Ukraine-based case for removing him suffers from the same problem as “their case against the president in the Russia matter” — to wit, “they are accusing Trump of attempted crimes that never actually came to fruition.” For example, “in the Russia affair, Democrats hoped to show that the Trump campaign” colluded with the Kremlin to steal the 2016 election — only have the claim debunked by special counsel Robert Mueller. Likewise, Dems are now touting a lawless “quid pro quo” with Kiev: military aid in exchange for Ukrainian dirt on Joe Biden. But even assuming Trump offered such an exchange, “it wasn’t done,” and “he dropped it.” An attempted quid pro quo isn’t the same thing as an actual one, which means “the Democratic case is perhaps not as strong as they would have you believe.”

Defense desk: Missile Defense Now
“Missile technology is advancing fast,” warns Christian Josi at The American Spectator, “but we can’t afford to simply wait for the next generation to deploy new and improved defenses.” To successfully protect “the United States from missile attack,” the nation needs a complicated, layered missile-defense system, and America has already made significant progress. Defense bureaucrats who are “taking steps that would slow down the development of the existing” system are thus making “a mistake.” The Pentagon, Josi argues, “needs to keep experimenting” to “help the program keep improving.” Or else the risk leaves the “country vulnerable at a time when countries such as Iran, North Korea, and even the recent wild card Turkey, are developing nuclear weapons that could threaten the homeland.”
Culture beat: Kanye Comes to Jesus
Kanye West has found God, opening up “about his porn addiction and why he banned his ‘Jesus Is King’ crew from engaging in premarital sex,” reports Andy Sahadeo at Fox News. The rapper came face-to-face with his porn habit a year after his mother’s death in 2017. As he told an interviewer, “some people drown themselves in drugs. And I drown myself in my addiction. . . . That’s what fed the ego, too. Money, clothes, cars, accolades, social media, paparazzi photos, going to Paris Fashion Week, all of that.” That is, until the “power of God” and “religion” helped him overcome the weight of sin.
Conservative: How America Became the Knicks
National Review’s Jim Geraghty thinks presidential candidate Andrew Yang “has a point” when he cites New York Knicks owner Jim Dolan’s “abysmal decisions” as a metaphor for the “arrogant, dismissive and incompetent brand of leadership flourishing in American life.” Many Americans would like to trust the “leaders and cultures” of America’s big institutions — the Catholic Church, the military, police and the like, “to say nothing of our faith in government at all levels.” Yet the “leaders of those institutions have betrayed that faith far too often in recent years and decades” — much like Dolan and his feckless team. No, the hyper-educated Yang is “probably not going to be the next president,” but his Knicks metaphor is both smart and something even “non-Ph.D.s can relate to.”
Energy wonk: Who Hyped the Electric Car?
The electric vehicle “is central to the notion that we’re on the cusp of a grand shift to a ‘new-energy economy,’ ” observes Mark Mills in City Journal. Each day brings new euphoric claims: that the cars are “easier to manufacture,” for instance, or that they “use less labor and will eventually cost less.” But not so fast. Yes, there are more of these cars on the road than ever before, but a lot of this growth is due to “mandates” to reduce fossil fuels and government subsidies to dealers to encourage sales of these “expensive” cars. Plus, electric cars aren’t even as green as the hype suggests. The 1,000-pound batteries require an “array of primary materials” like lithium, so producing them at “automotive scales would lead to an unprecedented global expansion in mining, with all the accompanying negative environmental effects.” Bottom line: “Rarely have so many claims about a product been so wrong.”

More weekend headlines

What are we doing here?

The President has invited foreign powers to interfere in the US presidential election.
Democrats want to impeach him for it.
It is a crossroads for the American system of government as the President tries to change what's acceptable for US politicians. This newsletter will focus on this consequential moment in US history.
