WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — The public could soon see new information about the origins of the counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign and Russia.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump issued a memorandum authorizing Attorney General William Barr to declassify material related to his inquiry into whether the government used improper surveillance techniques against the 2016 Trump campaign.

In a statement to reporters Friday, Trump described the investigation of his campaign as "an attempted coup" and said he expects the public will learn a lot from the documents the attorney general decides to declassify.
"Everything that they need is declassified and they'll be able to see how this hoax...or witch hunt started and why it started," Trump said. Underscoring the breadth of Barr's authority to release documents, Trump added the attorney general can "do whatever he wants to do with them."
Trump invoked an authority granted in December 2009 executive order signed by President Barack Obama. The order was aimed at improving government transparency by reducing the amount of material that could be classified and streamlining the process for declassifying or downgrading classified material as soon as it was deemed possible.
The move was somewhat ironic because it is widely expected that the declassified materials will be used to target former members of the Obama administration.
The president has repeatedly accused former officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Justice, Central Intelligence Agency and others of spying on his campaign. In a tweet last week, Trump broadly accused unnamed officials of "treason" and warned of "long jail sentences."
Asked Thursday who he believes committed treason, Trump named former FBI Director James Comey, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and "probably people higher than that."

Trump also named former FBI special agent Peter Strzok, who helped lead the agency's Trump-Russia counterintelligence investigation and Lisa Page, a former FBI lawyer who was romantically involved with Strzok. The two exchanged anti-Trump text messages which spawned the Republican investigation into potential bias at high levels of the FBI and DOJ.
In a recent interview with Fox News, Attorney General Barr suggested he was looking into the conduct of top Obama officials who played a role in the Trump-Russia investigation. "This was handled at a very senior level of these departments. It wasn't handled in the ordinary way that investigations or counterintelligence activities are conducted," Barr continued. "It was sort of an ad hoc small group and most of these people are no longer with the FBI or the CIA or the other agencies involved."
The Democratic Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee reacted to the declassification announcement warning that the attorney general would use his new authority to target political opponents. "Trump and Barr conspire to weaponize law enforcement and classified information against their political enemies," said Rep. Adam Schiff. "The coverup has entered a new and dangerous phase."
President Trump denied the accusation. "This is about finding out what happened," he told reporters at the White House. "It's not payback. I don't care about payback. I think it's very important for our country to find out what happened."
Trump's decision to give Attorney General Barr broad declassification authorities has also raised concerns that he will selectively release information that supports the administration's conclusion that the Trump campaign was the subject of improper or politically motivated surveillance.
The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner of Virginia argued that the attorney general "has already shown that he has no problem selectively releasing information in order to mislead the American people."
It is not yet clear what information the attorney general will declassify first. There is speculation that he may release transcripts of one or more Trump campaign associates being secretly recorded by the FBI.
On Capitol Hill, Trump's allies have been clamoring for him to declassify transcripts related to secretly recorded conversation or information obtained through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court order. Trump said Friday that his decision was based on people asking him "for over a year" to declassify certain materials.
Earlier this week, Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., told Sinclair Broadcast Group's Eric Bolling that he had been working with the president to declassify the FBI transcripts and was confident it was going to happen. "I think the president would be well-served to declassify any transcripts that are out there and let the American people judge for themselves," he said Wednesday.

Rep. Mark Meadows says he spoke to Trump about declassifying FBI transcripts. (SBG)
On Sunday, former Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Trey Gowdy told Fox News that there were transcripts of secretly recorded conversations between FBI informants and former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos. Gowdy claimed the transcript "has the potential to be a game changer" and could alter the public's perception of the basis for the government surveillance of the Trump campaign.
Papadopoulos was first contacted during the 2016 campaign by Stefan Halper, a Cambridge University professor and Azra Turk, a woman posing as Halper's assistant. Both were working as informants with the FBI which had launched a counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign, code-named "Crossfire Hurricane," based on Papadopoulos' suspicious contacts with Russians and a Maltese professor, Joseph Mifsud who reportedly promised to provide dirt on Hillary Clinton.
Papadopoulos was sentenced to 14 days in prison for lying to the special counsel about his contacts with Mifsud.
If the FBI acted improperly, it would be evident in transcripts of the informants' conversations with Papadopoulos, explained Jeff Danik, a retired FBI supervisory special agent. "If your target starts exculpating himself on your wire early on, that's a problem," he said. If a transcript shows that Papadopoulos refused to work with the FBI informants, was actively pushing back or failed to provide any useful information, it would be "devastating" to those who used it as a basis to build a broader investigation.
There are other possible transcripts that could emerge related to the FISA Court-ordered surveillance of multiple Trump campaign associates. Carter Page, who worked for the campaign briefly as a foreign policy aide, is the only confirmed target of FISA surveillance, but Papadopoulos believes he was targeted as well.
Among Republicans, there is a widespread belief that the FBI abused the FISA process and submitted incomplete and flawed material to the FISA Court in order to justify surveillance on Page. Specifically, there are concerns that the FBI submitted, as part of a FISA application, a dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele, who was paid by the Hillary Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee.
In response to concerns about how the Steele dossier was used to justify surveillance on Carter Page, the president ordered the declassification of hundreds of pages of the original FISA application, despite concerns from his intelligence community and U.S. allies.
The FISA Court authorized the surveillance on Page in October 2016 and it was reauthorized three times by different judges based on new evidence.
The issue of FISA abuse is the subject of an internal investigation by the Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz. Horwitz is expected to issue his final report on FISA abuse next month.
Former general counsel for the National Security Agency and public policy professor at George Mason University, Robert Deitz raised concerns that the administration is using declassification for partisan advantage.
"Barr, to the disappointment of many of his friends, has appeared to become a shill for the president in his conduct related to the Mueller report," he said. "I think this is likely to politicize the process in a way that it would not be politicized if you let declassification issues rest with those competent to handle them."
Barr confirmed the launch of a formal inquiry into "the genesis and the conduct of intelligence activities directed against the Trump campaign" earlier this month after telling Congress that "spying did occur." John Durham, the U.S Attorney for Connecticut, was tapped to conduct the inquiry.
According to reports and Barr's statements, the inquiry will cover the period before the election through Trump's inauguration. It will probe the FBI's use of informants, alleged surveillance abuse under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and consider whether top officials in the previous administration improperly disclosed information about the Trump-Russia probe to the press.
"There's a misconception out there that we know a lot about what happened," Barr told Fox News last week. "As far as I'm aware, no one has really looked across the whole waterfront."
The special counsel looked into the allegation that Trump colluded with Russia to interfere in the election and could not prove there was a conspiracy. Robert Mueller did not investigate the origins of the government's conduct of the investigation or the origins of the charges against Trump.
"I thought when I came in from the outside that all the questions I had, that many other people had that would be readily answered once I got in but I haven't found that to be the case," Barr said.

Barr Got More Power to Review the Russia Inquiry. Here’s What We Know About Its Origins. The New York Times
The attorney general has the power to declassify intelligence agencies' secrets as he examines the investigation into Russia's election interference and ties to ...
A new talking point parroted by Fox News and conservatives these days is that Democrats aren’t interested in governing and have zero accomplishments since they retook the House in January. This is just a little bit odd, because the House of Representatives have passed more than one hundred bills since the 116th Congress was sworn in. The majority of them were blocked in the Republican Senate by Mitch McConnell who not only refuses to allow a vote on them, he’s actually campaigning on his own obstruction – promising he’ll be the Grim Reaper if Trump loses in 2020.
Neither move from McConnell is all that surprising – as he’s called his blocking of Merrick Garland’s SCOTUS nomination one of his proudest moments in Congress. Now, one of his fellow Republicans is having second thoughts on the idea. Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana tends to keep a fairly low profile in Congress, last making headlines when he highlighted his own ignorance of the internet during a hearing with Mark Zuckerberg last year. Giving a speech yesterday, Kennedy openly admitted that the GOP has accomplished nothing, short of rushing to confirm a number of unqualified right wing federal judges.
“Other than the nominations, which are important, we have done nothing. Zero. Zilch. Nada,” Kennedy said in his speech. It’s not that he’s suddenly concerned about bipartisanship as he pretended to be in his address, but he knows that the Republican Party will have to play defense in 22 states next year if they want to keep the Senate, and they’ll need to point to some legislative accomplishments – especially when it comes to issues as non-controversial as election security or infrastructure.
The post GOP Senator admits just how dysfunctional the Republican Senate is appeared first on Palmer Report.
