It looks like the story with "Covid-19" will repeat HIV-AIDS: no efficient vaccine will be found, it will drag for years as the instrument of Terror, only the larger one. No wonder: it also looks like they came out from the same secret labs, inherited from the Nazi Germany. - M.N.

Sen. Ron Johnson subpoenas FBI over Russia, defends Biden probe

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican Sen. Ron Johnson said Monday that he has subpoenaed the FBI to produce documents to his committee related to the Trump-Russia investigation.
The Wisconsin senator also defended a separate investigation he is leading into Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and Ukraine, even as Democrats say the probe has the effect of amplifying Russian propaganda and as U.S. intelligence officials say they have assessed that Russia is working to denigrate Biden ahead of the November election.
CLICK HERE to read the subpoena.
Johnsons Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is one of multiple Republican-led Senate panels scrutinizing the FBIs investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Another, the Judiciary Committee, has released a series of documents in recent weeks aimed at discrediting the probe, including material on Sunday that the chairman, Sen. Lindsey Graham, said raised questions about whether the FBI had misled Congress about the accuracy of information it received during the investigation.
The subpoena demands that the FBI produce by Aug. 20 the records that it gave to the Justice Department inspector generals office, which concluded in a report last December that the Russia investigation had been opened for a valid reason but that the FBI had made significant errors during its surveillance of a former Trump campaign adviser.
The FBI said in a statement that it had received the subpoena and that the bureau had already been producing documents and information for Johnsons committee. As always, the FBI will continue to cooperate with the Committees requests, consistent with our law enforcement and national security obligations, the statement said.
In a separate statement on Sunday, the FBI said that it was continuing to cooperate with the Judiciary Committees investigation.
Johnson publicized the subpoena along with a more than 5,000-word open letter in which he sought to explain the basis for his scrutiny of the Russia investigation and to defend his Biden probe against allegations that he was amplifying Russian disinformation.
I felt it was important to provide this explanation of my investigations because of the concerted and coordinated attacks on my efforts that I have interpreted as a brush back pitch to deter my actions and preemptively marginalize my committees findings, Johnson wrote in an email.
He said he was concerned that the media was preparing to taint his committees findings as an extension of Russian propaganda. Democrats in recent weeks have expressed alarm about the probe, and a statement Friday by William Evanina, the governments chief counterintelligence official, called out by name a pro-Russia Ukrainian lawmaker who has spread leaked recordings about Biden meant to be pejorative.
Johnson denied Monday ever receiving information from that lawmaker, Andrii Derkach, or being part of a Russian disinformation effort.
As always, almost all of the documents we are seeking and will make public are from U.S. sources, Johnson wrote in the letter.
The Biden-Ukraine issue is a politically freighted one, particularly after President Donald Trump urged his Ukraine counterpart in a July 2019 phone call to investigate Biden and his son Hunter, who was a paid board member of a Ukraine gas company called Burisma Holdings. That phone call formed the basis of Trumps impeachment by the House in December. He was acquitted by the Senate in February.
Hunter Biden has denied using his influence with his father to aid Burisma, and Biden has denied speaking with his son about his overseas business dealings.
Trump and his allies, including Johnson, have raised questions about Bidens move as vice president in 2016 to pressure the Ukrainian government to fire its top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, who had previously led an investigation into Burismas owner.
Biden was representing the official position of the U.S. government, a position that was also supported by other Western governments.

From real estate to businesses, signs the pandemic is boosting wealth concentration: Don Pittis

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

A strong surge in the price of Canada's most desirable houses seems to fly in the face of an economy facing a record wave of bankruptcies and a sharp loss in jobs.
But as we try to disentangle the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact, we may be observing a powerful economic force exacerbated by the promise of a long stretch of low-interest loans.
Effectively what we are seeing is that while parts of the economy weaken, the weakness is not shared equally. A similar process applies to people who have kept their jobs and thus their incomes flowing and to businesses, both able to profit from their short-term budgetary advantage.
While many smaller corporations and even more small businesses, such as corner stores and restaurants, go under, companies and individuals with a solid base and a strong cash flow can borrow at historically low rates allowing them to stock up on assets they expect will keep their value once the crisis is over.

House prices not falling

National figures on house prices from the Canadian Real Estate Association are out a week from today. But early speculation that property prices would fall has certainly not been borne out in Canada's hottest markets.
And that comes despite new figures on Friday that show 1.3 million Canadian jobs have disappeared since the pandemic struck.
Even while rental properties face a glut, sales and prices for homes in Vancouver and Toronto are both up sharply. In Toronto, real estate board figures show detached home prices in July rose more than 25 per cent year over year increases similar to the biggest boom years, from 2010 to the spring of 2017, of what many described then as a growing real estate bubble.
"We're seeing the results today of pent-up activity, from both homebuyers and sellers, that had been accumulating in our market throughout the year," Colette Gerber, chair of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, said last week. "Low interest rates and limited overall supply are also increasing competition across our market."
Mortgage brokers report that banks have tightened their requirements for who can get a loan, but for those eligible, five-year fixed mortgages can be two per cent or lower.
And of course that's the trouble with cheap money, especially at times when people are in danger of losing their jobs and businesses: It tends to go to those who need it the least in other words, those most certain to pay it back.
Research in the United States shows that while small businesses owned by Black people failed at an astounding rate of 41 per cent almost double the still very large decline of 22 per cent for all small businesses  there is evidence that government support did not go to the areas of greatest need. The smallest businesses received less support, as did businesses owned by people of colour.
In those cases, poorly designed aid programs that were rushed out the door to stave off a crisis may have been part of the problem, wrote Gillian Tett in the Financial Times.

'Exacerbating inequity'

"The more the pandemic spreads, the more it risks exacerbating inequity in unexpected ways, particularly, but not exclusively, in the U.S.," Tett suggested.
There are increasing signs the same thing is happening in the corporate world. There were reports that mergers-and-acquisition activity, as company takeovers are called in the business world, slumped early in the pandemic when fears for the economy were highest.
But last week as Microsoft made a bid to buy TikTok, the U.S. news site Axios declared, "Mergers and acquisitions make a comeback," citing a list of deals underway, many of them from tech giants that have prospered during the pandemic downturn.
"COVID-19 could further exacerbate concentration, with many larger incumbents able to purchase distressed companies cheaply as we've seen with the U.S. tech giants, which continue with their mergers-and-acquisition activity, even while under investigation for antitrust violations," said Denise Hearn, co-author of The Myth of Capitalism, writing in Canada's Hill Times last week.
Corporate (or capital) concentration, a well-known Marxist critique of capitalism, is not a conspiracy but a natural free-market effect that is in many respects benign and part of the process of creative destruction.
When businesses whose finances have been stretched too far go broke during a downturn, some die and disappear. But other companies with stronger cash flow or deeper pockets step in to pick off the companies or portions of companies they think will be worthwhile following the crisis effectively preserving value to the economy created by the previous owner.
Just as in the housing market, low interest rates matter because stable companies with cash flow and deep pockets have access to all that cheap money created by central banks. Quite reasonably, for lenders, bankrupt companies already deep in debt are not such good prospects.
While this capital concentration may be natural, fulfilling the proverb "them that has, gets" which traces its origins at least as far back as the New Testament (Matthew 25:29) making the rich richer and big companies bigger is not necessarily politically desirable.
There was speculation early in the pandemic that the crisis might be the catalyst for a move away from wealth polarization. But just as they did after the 2008 crisis, lower-for-longer interest rates have once again flowed straight into the pockets of the wealthiest.
As governments brainstorm on how to phase out support for the financial victims of the coronavirus, it appears they may not be able to depend on low rates alone to solve the long-term trends toward greater inequality and capital concentration.

The Corona chart: the pandemic thunders back into Europe, at full speed - Innovation Origins

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from Comments on: The Corona chart: the pandemic thunders back into Europe, at full speed.

Covid-19 returned to Europe in the first week of August. After a relatively quiet month of June and a July that was dominated by new waves, the figures for the first week of August most resemble those of last spring.
Whether you call this a second wave or an extension of the first wave, doesnt matter: the pandemic is back in Europe. This started in the first weeks of July in Spain and later also in Belgium, but is now spreading almost everywhere. Already last week we noticed the return of the virus, now the pace is increasing as well.
New peaks have also been reached now by France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Denmark, Austria, and the Czech Republic. This weeks subnational corona map of Europe, therefore, leaves little to the imagination.

Unlike the United States?

That the pandemic would return to Europe so soon is a surprise to many. Unlike, for example, the United States, where the five millionth positive diagnosis was registered on Monday, there has been a pause here due to the restrictions of last spring. This is no longer the case.
Belgium and Luxembourg are the hardest-hit countries within the Benelux. Adjoining parts in the Netherlands and France are growing along with it. The way in which the virus spreads in two relatively densely populated small countries, the Netherlands and Belgium, differs enormously. In Belgium, it is spread relatively evenly across the country while in the Netherlands there is a huge difference between the west and east. It is difficult to say exactly why. In the spring this already happened in a similar way.
The east of Germany, Hungary, Finland, and Slovakia came through the week most intact. The Czech Republic has failed to extend last springs containment success. Especially around Prague, things are going fast now. The virus got a foothold in the Central European country after a wave in neighboring Poland.
How this came about is even more visible with the sliders below in which last week (upper slider) and four weeks ago (lower slider) were placed next to this weeks corona chart.

The Zuid-Holland summer hearth

Sweden, that in the months May and June mainly played a negative leading role on these maps, is now hardly noticeable anymore. Spain and Romania are the most active Covid-19 hotspots at the beginning of August. In Spain, this is even so fierce that the legend had to be changed. Aragon, in the northeast of the country, registered such an increase that the maximum value on the map had to be adjusted from 220 to 470.
In seven days time, no less than 6,185 people were diagnosed with Covid-19 in the Spanish region. This comes down to 468.8 per 100,000 inhabitants. More than doubling the highest increase ever seen on this series of maps, which has been running since the beginning of May.
The Flemish province of Antwerp is in the top ten fastest climbers for the first time. With a seven-day increase of 38.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, Zuid-Holland (in the Western part of the Netherlands) is in 23rd place. This means that the most densely populated province of the Netherlands has risen twelve places compared to last week. The neighboring province of Zeeland, which peaked earlier, dropped slightly this week. This does not apply to Noord-Holland, which recorded its 39th highest corona increase in the first seven days of August with a growth of 29.6 per 100,000.
To put the figures in context: in Germany, an alarm value of 50 per 100,000 inhabitants is used to implement local lock-down measures. These are the places where SARS-CoV-2 was at its strongest in relative terms.

Fryslân boppe?

As you can clearly see on the maps, its not a pandemic forest fire everywhere. Nevertheless, the green areas, that did not exhibit any new diagnoses, have become scarce. Only the small Swiss canton Appenzell and the dwarf state of San Marino kept the zero this week. Northern and Eastern Finland did not do badly either, with just one more. This now seems to be the most corona-free area of the whole continent.
In the 25 parts of the continent with the least growth per 100,000 inhabitants between 1 and 7 August, there is also a Dutch province: Friesland occupies the eighteenth position in the whole of Europe with only eight new cases. However, the new infections of last weekend in Dokkum have not yet been added. Fryslân boppe, as they say in their local language? It is unlikely that the Frisians will once again be among the most corona-free areas in Europe next week.
Groningen, which was also high on this ranking for a long time, has fallen back with 6.8 new diagnoses per 100,000 inhabitants. Drenthe (2.8) and Limburg (3.3) are still in the top 100.

20 million contaminations on earth

The fact that Europe has not been affected by the coronavirus for a while is exceptional on a global level. Only East Asia and Oceania can say the same. The first wave is still spreading in Latin America, Russia, India, and the Middle East. In the United States, the five millionth coronavirus infection was detected on Monday night. The total number of Covid-19 infections is more than 20 million. More than 733,600 of them died.
Is Europe chasing the United States? Thats hard to predict. Probably not, because most countries have chosen a strategy. With regional lock-downs, more extensive mouthguard obligations or mandatory quarantines for incoming travellers from at-risk countries, things should be prevented from getting as out of hand as they did last spring.
Below the proportion of positive tests in relation to the total is visualized. According to the WHO, countries that are above 10 percent have the most cause for concern.

Containment or ignition?

The increase of recent weeks will most likely continue for the rest of the month. This will have consequences for care capacity and mortality, but how much exactly remains to be guessed. Hospital admissions are already increasing in Spain, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
In countries where the pandemic is most pro-actively dealt with, these figures are generally the lowest. In Greece, Hungary, and Slovakia, for example, Covid-19 has caused very little misery. These countries already locked up society after a handful of infections.
Norway, Switzerland, and Germany are relying on their reputable healthcare system and have great confidence in thorough contact research and an operational tracing app. However, the Norwegians seem to have a problem after their app went off bounds, as far as privacy violations are concerned.

Its not a matter of wait & see

In any case, what doesnt seem to help is waiting and relying too much on the common sense of the population. After all, things have been going wrong in the United States for months with this kind of approach. Very wrong.
