China Lied About the Outbreak. Is China Lying About the Science of COVID-19? Citizens Commission on National Security

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from Citizens Commission on National Security.

Anyone who, at this juncture, states categorically that COVID-19 is a naturally-occurring disease that mutated in animal populations, acquiring the ability to infect humans and did so via bats in the Wuhan Seafood Market, has not read or does not understand the scientific literature.
Yes, coronaviruses have previously jumped from animals to humans, but that does not mean that COVID-19 did.
First of all, it was already known by the end of January 2020 that the initial patients hospitalized between December 1-10, 2019 had not visited the Wuhan Seafood Market, and by the beginning of February 2020 a scientific report established that there were no bats sold in that market.
Those observations alone should have immediately raised doubts within the scientific community about the validity of a naturally-occurring theory for COVID-19.
There is also no evolutionary pathway that conclusively demonstrates that COVID-19 was the product of a natural process.
Questioning the naturally-occurring theory for the origin of COVID-19 is especially warranted given the presence of the unique furin polybasic cleavage site that does not exist in any of the yet-identified coronavirus close relatives.
There are, however, other reasons for scientists to doubt the naturally-occurring theory.
Viruses can change naturally or artificially through mutation, recombination events or both. Given the sophistication of modern techniques, the two can be indistinguishable. Nevertheless, sometimes clues are left behind.
The claim that COVID-19 is naturally-occurring is based nearly entirely on a single, but widely-cited Nature Medicine article entitled The Proximal Origin of SAR-CoV-2, which compares the structure of COVID-19 to what the authors consider its closest relative found in animal populations, specifically, the bat coronavirus RaTG13.
RaTG13 was isolated by Wuhan Institute of Virology scientists from Yunnan Province bats in July 2013, but, strangely, its sequence was not submitted for publication until January 2020 and was unknown to the scientific community before then.
It does not appear that anyone outside of China has verified the sequence of RaTG13, nor have any independent laboratories had an opportunity to conduct experiments on a strain critical to the naturally-occurring theory. One author suggests the RaTG13 sequence might be fabricated.
For the sake of argument, lets consider the sequence accurate.
The naturally-occurring theory for the origin of COVID-19, which is based entirely on comparing its structure to RaTG13, begins to unravel when the genome of RaTG13 is examined more closely compared to the amino acid sequence.
Comparing the sequences in the S2 portion of the critical spike protein, between positions 647 and 1124, which would ordinarily tolerate mutations, not a single amino acid changes. Yet, at the gene level, which codes for those amino acids, the two differ 79 times.
Stated simply, the statistical probability of that occurring is 1 in 9,526,094, suggesting either COVID-19 or RaTG13 is not natural.
It is clearly premature to say definitively that COVID-19 is naturally-occurring when we do not fully know about what coronaviruses China has isolated, what experiments have been done with them and if the conclusions published by Chinese scientists are accurate, in particular, those conclusions published in 2020.
Since the outbreak began, China has flooded the scientific literature with subtle and sometimes not so subtle messages supporting its narrative that COVID-19 is naturally-occurring.
Despite the enormous number of comments made by Western media and the amount of digital ink expended by its so-called experts, the main evidence presented so far supporting the naturally-occurring theory of the origin of COVID-19 may be, at best, circumstantial or, at worst, completely wrong.

Chinas narrative about the origin of COVID-19 is starting to unravel, Opinions & Blogs News

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from DBatVir update (2020/03).

The narrative promoted by China as to the origin of COVID-19 and the one quickly adopted by the scientific establishment and the media has always been that COVID-19, while circulating in a bat population, mutated, acquiring the ability to infect humans, which was then transmitted to people either visiting or working in the Wuhan Seafood Market
On February 3, 2020, Chinese researchers led by Zheng-Li Shi of the Wuhan Institute of Virology published an article in the prestigious journal Nature, which became the basis of the naturally-occurring narrative by identifying a previously unknown bat coronavirus, RaTg13, as a close relative to COVID-19.
A month later, using RaTG13 as a linchpin of its argument, Western scientists published The Proximal Origin of SAR-CoV-2, which became the single most widely-cited article by scientists and the media to support the contention that COVID-19 came from nature.
Thus, originated the wide scientific consensus claimed even by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in the United States in its April 30, 2020 statement that COVID-19 was not manmade or genetically modified.
It did not take long for doubts about the validity of the RaTG13 argument or even its existence to appear, as the April 25, 2020 article Is Bat Coronavirus 4991 a Smoking Gun in Chinas COVID-19 Cover-up? will attest.
We have now learned that RaTG13 existed only on paper. RaTG13 and BtCoV/4991 are the same virus.
How long has this been known by the scientists involved and has it been part of a deliberate deception?
"Although sequenced earlier, the entire RaTG13 genome was later uploaded to the National Institutes of Health GenBank with an updated timestamp of March 24, 2020 and an accession number MN996532.1."
In that filing, there is no mention of BtCoV/4991.
Yet, in a Chinese virus database, dated March 7, 2020 in the source code, RaTG13 and BtCoV/4991 are listed as equivalent and links to the NIH GenBank.
What else has China been hiding?
The numerous inconsistencies in the theory that COVID-19 is naturally-occurring are well-documented.
A thorough, objective investigation of the true origin of COVID-19 is long overdue.

Did This Nobel Prize Winner Say COVID-19 Was Created in a Lab?

And, please, follow the CDC or WHO for guidance on protecting your community from the disease.

Since the outset of the COVID-19 coronavirus disease pandemic, weve fielded a number of questions about the origins of this strain of coronavirus. While the general consensus of the scientific community is that COVID-19 evolved naturally, there have been some outliers who have proposed other theories about this diseases origins.
Luc Montagnier, for instance, a French virologist who won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2008 for his discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), said during an appearance on Frances CNews that COVID-19 was not natural and suggested that this disease actually resulted from work done by molecular biologists who were attempting to create an AIDS vaccine.
Montagnier said (translation via European Scientist):
We came to the conclusion that there was manipulation around this virus. [] To a part but I do not say the total [] of the coronavirus of the bat, someone added sequences, in particular of HIV, the virus of AIDS. [] It is not natural. Its the work of professionals, of molecular biologists. [] A very meticulous work.
Heres the video of Montagnier claiming that COVID-19 was artificially created in a lab by scientists working on an AIDS vaccine:
While Montagnier truly made these statements, his theory that COVID-19 was artificially created in an attempt to create an AIDS vaccine has been widely disputed by scientists.
Virologist Etienne Simon-Lorière from the Pasteur Institute in Paris called the theory absurd, saying:
That does not make sense. These are very small elements that are found in other viruses of the same family, other coronaviruses in nature These are pieces of the genome that actually look like lots of sequences in the genetic material of bacteria, viruses and plants.
If we take a word from a book and that word resembles that of another book, can we say that one has copied from the other? Its absurd.
European Scientist also published an article debunking Montagniers claim.
During his appearance on CNews, Montagnier noted that his theory was supported by a paper published by a group of researchers in India. While its true that a paper claiming that HIV-1s genetic code could be found in COVID-19, this paper, as the Cnews presenters noted, was not published in a peer-reviewed journal. Furthermore, the paper was subsequently withdrawn by its authors.
We addressed that paper in another article concerning various conspiracy theories about the origins of the coronavirus:
Does the Novel Coronavirus Contain HIV-Related Genes?
Another line of pseudoscientific reasoning concerns claims that the virus is just too perfectly built to infect humans to be a virus of natural origin. A big talking point in this space stems from a paper that was later retracted by the authors themselves. On Feb. 2, a team of Indian researchers released a non-peer-reviewed preprint of a paper asserting to have found uncanny similarities between amino acid structures in SARS-CoV-2 and HIV. The finding, they argued, is unlikely to be fortuitous in nature, seemingly implying a level of human engineering behind the virus.
The paper was swiftly retracted by the authors, according to STAT News, with commenters noting the studys rushed methods and likely coincidental, if not entirely incorrect, conclusion. A Feb. 14 paper, this one peer-reviewed, demonstrated no evidence that the sequences of these four inserts are HIV-1 specific or the [SARS-CoV-2] viruses obtain these insertions from HIV-1.
Speaking to Snopes by email, Robert Garry, an infectious disease expert at Tulane University who has published on the origins of SARS-CoV-2, told us by email that the so-called HIV sequences are very short nothing more than random chance.
Such a reality has not stopped pseudoscientific internet personalities from incorporating these already discredited results into misinformed conspiracy theories while pushing vaccine skeptical content.
While many of the medical professionals responding to Montagniers statements tended to focus on scientific issues with his claim, CNews noted Montagniers history of wading into pseudoscience territory. Montagnier, for instance, is a proponent of water memory, an unproven theory at the center of many homeopathic remedies, which, according to Richard Sachleben, a retired chemist and member of the American Chemical Societys panel of experts, doesnt hold up to scientific scrutiny.
Nobel Prize-winner Montagnier truly said that COVID-19 was created in a lab by researchers who were attempting to make an AIDS vaccine. However, that doesnt mean what he said was accurate. In fact, a peer-reviewed study from the Scripps Research Institute that was published in the journal Nature in March 2020 found no evidence that the virus was made in a laboratory or otherwise engineered.
National Institute of Health Director Dr. Francis Collins provided his thoughts on this study from the Scripps Research Institute in a blog post, writing that a new study debunks such claims by providing scientific evidence that this novel coronavirus arose naturally. Collins went on to say that there is still much to learn about the origins of COVID-19, especially on how it was initially transmitted to humans. For this, Collins provides two scenarios:
No matter where you go online these days, theres bound to be discussion of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Some folks are even making outrageous claims that the new coronavirus causing the pandemic was engineered in a lab and deliberately released to make people sick. A new study debunks such claims by providing scientific evidence that this novel coronavirus arose naturally.
[]
In the first scenario, as the new coronavirus evolved in its natural hosts, possibly bats or pangolins, its spike proteins mutated to bind to molecules similar in structure to the human ACE2 protein, thereby enabling it to infect human cells. This scenario seems to fit other recent outbreaks of coronavirus-caused disease in humans, such as SARS, which arose from cat-like civets; and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), which arose from camels.
The second scenario is that the new coronavirus crossed from animals into humans before it became capable of causing human disease. Then, as a result of gradual evolutionary changes over years or perhaps decades, the virus eventually gained the ability to spread from human-to-human and cause serious, often life-threatening disease.
Either way, this study leaves little room to refute a natural origin for COVID-19. And thats a good thing because it helps us keep focused on what really matters: observing good hygiene, practicing social distancing, and supporting the efforts of all the dedicated health-care professionals and researchers who are working so hard to address this major public health challenge.
This isnt the first time weve been asked about comments a Nobel Prize winner supposedly made about the coronavirus. Another Nobel laureate, Tasuku Honjo, was also rumored to have said that COVID-19 was man-made. While the scientific community disputed the accuracy of Montagniers comments, Honjos alleged comment was dismissed because he simply didnt say it. That quote was entirely fictional

Yea they definitely have an agenda in the way this is written. By giving a specific date for the interaction then stating a vague it took till the end of January for the WHO to announce they are trying to smear WHO and imply China successfully manipulated them. The 21st is the end of January.
And they announced on the 22nd that there were human to humans transmissions.

A virus wrapped in mystery

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

In support of public health, were continuing to keep our vital coronavirus content available to all readers online.

The coronavirus has killed so many people in Iran that the country has resorted to mass burials, but in neighboring Iraq, the body count is fewer than 100.
The Dominican Republic has reported nearly 7,600 cases of the virus. Just across the border, Haiti has recorded about 85.
In Indonesia, thousands are believed to have died of the coronavirus. In nearby Malaysia, a strict lockdown has kept fatalities to about 100.
The coronavirus has touched almost every country on earth, but its impact has seemed capricious. Global metropolises like New York, Paris and London have been devastated, while teeming cities like Bangkok, Baghdad, New Delhi and Lagos have, so far, largely been spared.
[CORONAVIRUS: Click here for our complete coverage » arkansasonline.com/coronavirus]
The question of why the virus has overwhelmed some places and left others relatively untouched is a puzzle that has spawned numerous theories and speculations but no definitive answers. That knowledge could have profound implications for how countries respond to the virus, for determining who is at risk and for knowing when it's safe to go out again.
There are already hundreds of studies underway around the world looking into how demographics, preexisting conditions and genetics might affect the wide variation in impact.
Doctors in Saudi Arabia are studying whether genetic differences may help explain varying levels of severity in covid-19 cases among Saudi Arabs, while scientists in Brazil are looking into the relationship between genetics and covid-19 complications. Teams in multiple countries are studying if common hypertension medications might worsen the disease's severity and whether a particular tuberculosis vaccine might do the opposite.
Many developing nations with hot climates and young populations have escaped the worst, suggesting that temperature and demographics could be factors. But countries like Peru, Indonesia and Brazil, tropical countries in the throes of growing epidemics, throw cold water on that idea.
Draconian social distancing and early lockdown measures have clearly been effective, but Burma, also known as Myanmar, and Cambodia did neither and have reported few cases.
One theory that is unproven but impossible to refute: Maybe the virus just hasn't gotten to those countries yet. Russia and Turkey appeared to be fine until, suddenly, they were not.
Time may still prove the greatest equalizer. The Spanish flu that broke out in the United States in 1918 seemed to die down during the summer only to come roaring back with a deadlier strain in the fall and a third wave the following year. It eventually reached far-flung places like islands in Alaska and the South Pacific and infected a third of the world's population.
"We are really early in this disease," said Dr. Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Research Institute. "If this were a baseball game, it would be the second inning, and there's no reason to think that by the ninth inning the rest of the world that looks now like it hasn't been affected won't become like other places."
Doctors who study infectious diseases around the world say they do not have enough data yet to get a full epidemiological picture, and that gaps in information in many countries make it dangerous to draw conclusions. Testing is woeful in many places, leading to vast underestimates of the virus's progress, and deaths are almost certainly undercounted.
Still, the broad patterns are clear. Even in places with abysmal record-keeping and broken health systems, mass burials or hospitals turning away sick people by the thousands would be hard to miss, and a number of places are just not seeing them -- at least not yet.
Interviews with more than two dozen infectious disease experts, health officials, epidemiologists and academics around the globe suggest four main factors that could help explain where the virus thrives and where it doesn't: demographics, culture, environment and the speed of government responses.
Each possible explanation comes with considerable caveats and confounding counterevidence. If an aging population is the most vulnerable, for instance, Japan should be at the top of the list. It is far from it. Nonetheless, these are the factors that experts find the most persuasive.
POWER OF YOUTH
Many countries that have escaped mass epidemics have relatively younger populations.
Young people are more likely to contract mild or asymptomatic cases that are less transmissible to others, said Robert Bollinger, a professor of infectious diseases at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. And they are less likely to have certain health problems that can make covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, particularly deadly, according to the World Health Organization.
Africa -- with about 45,000 reported cases, a tiny fraction of its 1.3 billion people -- is the world's youngest continent, with more than 60% of its population under age 25. In Thailand and Najaf, Iraq, local health officials found that the 20-29 age group had the highest rate of infection but often showed few symptoms.
By contrast, the national median age in Italy, one of the hardest-hit countries, is more than 45. The average age of those who died of covid-19 there was around 80.
Younger people tend to have stronger immune systems, which can result in milder symptoms, said Josip Car, an expert in population and global health at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
In Singapore and Saudi Arabia, for instance, most of the infections are among foreign migrant workers, many of them living in cramped dormitories. However, many of those workers are young and fit, and have not required hospitalization.
Along with youth, relative good health can lessen the impact of the virus among those who are infected, while certain preexisting conditions -- notably hypertension, diabetes and obesity -- can worsen the severity, researchers in the United States say.
There are notable exceptions to the demographic theory. Japan, with the world's oldest average population, has recorded fewer than 520 deaths, although its caseload has risen with increased testing.
The Guayas region of Ecuador, the epicenter of an outbreak that may have claimed up to 7,000 lives, has one of the youngest populations in the country, with only 11% of its residents over 60 years old.
And Jha of Harvard warns that some young people who are not showing symptoms are highly contagious for reasons that are not well understood.
CULTURAL DISTANCE
Cultural factors, like the social distancing that is built into certain societies, may give some countries more protection, epidemiologists said.
In Thailand and India, where virus numbers are relatively low, people greet one another at a distance, with their individual palms together as in prayer. In Japan and South Korea, people bow, and long before the coronavirus arrived, they tended to wear masks when feeling unwell.
In much of the developing world, the custom of caring for the elderly at home leads to fewer nursing homes, which have been tinder for outbreaks in the West.
However, there are notable exceptions to the cultural-distancing theory. In many parts of the Middle East, such as Iraq and the Persian Gulf countries, men often embrace or shake hands on meeting, yet most are not getting sick.
What might be called "national distancing" has also proven advantageous. Countries that are relatively isolated have reaped health benefits from their seclusion.
Far-flung nations, such as some in the South Pacific and parts of sub-Saharan Africa, have not been as inundated with visitors who carry the virus with them. Health experts in Africa cite limited travel from abroad as perhaps the main reason for the continent's relatively low infection rate.
Countries that are less accessible for political reasons, like Venezuela, or because of conflict, like Syria and Libya, have also been somewhat shielded by the lack of travelers, as have countries like Lebanon and Iraq, which have endured widespread protests in recent months.
The lack of public transportation in developing countries may have also reduced the spread of the virus there.
HEAT AND LIGHT
The geography of the outbreak -- which spread rapidly during the winter in temperate-zone countries like Italy and the United States and was virtually unseen in warmer countries such as Chad or Guyana -- seemed to suggest that the virus did not take well to heat. Other coronaviruses, such as ones that cause the common cold, are less contagious in warmer, moist climates.
But researchers say the idea that hot weather alone can repel the virus is wishful thinking.
Some of the worst outbreaks in the developing world have been in places like the Amazonas region of Brazil, as tropical a place as any.
"The best guess is that summer conditions will help but are unlikely by themselves to lead to significant slowing of growth or to a decline in cases," said Marc Lipsitch, director of the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics at Harvard University.
The virus that causes covid-19 appears to be so contagious as to mitigate any beneficial effect of heat and humidity, said Dr. Raul Rabadan, a computational biologist at Columbia University.
But other aspects of warm climates, like people spending more time outside, could help.
"People living indoors within enclosed environments may promote virus recirculation, increasing the chance of contracting the disease," said Car of the Nanyang Technological University.
The ultraviolet rays of direct sunlight inhibit this coronavirus, according to a study by ecological modelers at the University of Connecticut. So surfaces in sunny places may be less likely to remain contaminated, but transmission usually occurs through contact with an infected person, not by touching a surface.
No scientist has proposed that beaming light inside an infected person, as President Donald Trump has suggested, would be an effective cure. And tropical conditions may have even lulled some people into a false sense of security.
"People were saying, 'It's hot here; nothing will happen to me,'" said Dr. Doménica Cevallos, a medical investigator in Ecuador. "Some were even going out on purpose to sunbathe, thinking it would protect them from infection."
EARLY LOCKDOWNS
Countries that locked down early, like Vietnam and Greece, have been able to avoid out-of-control contagions, evidence of the power of strict social distancing and quarantines to contain the virus.
In Africa, countries with bitter experience with killers like HIV, drug-resistant tuberculosis and Ebola knew the drill and reacted quickly.
Airport staffs from Sierra Leone to Uganda were taking temperatures (since found to be a less effective measure) and contact details, and wearing masks long before their counterparts in the United States and Europe took such precautions.
Senegal and Rwanda closed their borders and announced curfews when they still had few cases. Health ministries began contact tracing early.
All that happened in a region where health ministries had come to rely on money, personnel and supplies from foreign donors, many of which had to turn their attention to outbreaks in their own countries, said Catherine Kyobutungi, executive director of the African Population and Health Research Center.
"Countries wake up one day, and they're like, 'OK, the weight of the country rests on our shoulders, so we need to step up,'" she said. "And they have. Some of the responses have been beautiful to behold, honestly."
Sierra Leone repurposed disease-tracking protocols that had been established in the wake of the Ebola outbreak in 2014, in which almost 4,000 people died there. The government set up emergency operations centers in every district and recruited 14,000 community health workers, 1,500 of whom are being trained as contact tracers, even though Sierra Leone has only about 155 confirmed cases.
It is not clear, however, who will pay for their salaries or for expenses like motorcycles and raincoats to keep them operating during the coming wet season.
Uganda, which also suffered during the Ebola contagion, quickly quarantined travelers from Dubai after the first case of the coronavirus arrived from there. Authorities also tracked down about 800 others who had traveled from Dubai in previous weeks.
The Ugandan health authorities are also testing about 1,000 truck drivers a day. But many of those who test positive have traveled from Tanzania and Kenya, countries that are not monitoring as aggressively, leading to worries that the virus will keep penetrating porous borders.
Lockdowns, with bans on religious conclaves and spectator sporting events, clearly work, the World Health Organization says. More than a month after closing national borders, schools and most businesses, countries from Thailand to Jordan have seen new infections drop.
In the Middle East, the widespread shuttering of mosques, shrines and churches happened relatively early and probably helped stem the spread in many countries.
A notable exception was Iran, which did not close some of its largest shrines until March 18, a full month after it registered its first case in the pilgrimage city of Qum. The epidemic spread quickly from there, killing thousands in the country and spreading the virus across borders as pilgrims returned home.
As effective as lockdowns are, in countries lacking a strong social safety net and those where most people work in the informal economy, orders closing businesses and requiring people to shelter in place will be difficult to maintain for long. When people are forced to choose between social distancing and feeding their families, they are choosing the latter.
Counterintuitively, some countries where authorities reacted late and with spotty enforcement of lockdowns appear to have been spared. Cambodia and Laos both had brief spates of infections when few social distancing measures were in place, but neither has recorded a new case in about three weeks.
Lebanon, whose Muslim and Christian citizens often go on pilgrimages respectively to Iran and Italy, places rife with the virus, should have had high numbers of infections. It has not.
"We just didn't see what we were expecting," said Dr. Roy Nasnas, an infectious disease consultant at the University Hospital Geitaoui in Beirut. "We don't know why."
ROLL OF THE DICE
Finally, most experts agree that there may be no single reason for some countries to be hit and others missed. The answer is likely to be some combination of the above factors as well as one other mentioned by researchers: Sheer luck.
Countries with the same culture and climate could have vastly different outcomes if one infected person attends a crowded social occasion, turning it into what researchers call a superspreader event.
That happened when a passenger infected 634 people on the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan, when an infected guest attended a large funeral in Albany, Ga.; and when a 61-year-old woman went to church in Daegu, South Korea, spreading the disease to hundreds of congregants and then to thousands of other Koreans.
Because an infected person may not experience symptoms for a week or more, if at all, the disease spreads under the radar, exponentially and seemingly at random. Had the woman in Daegu stayed home that Sunday in February, the outbreak in South Korea might have been less than half of what it is.
Some countries that should have been inundated are not, leaving researchers scratching their heads.
Thailand reported the first confirmed case of coronavirus outside of China in mid-January, from a traveler from Wuhan, the Chinese city where the pandemic is thought to have begun. In those critical weeks, Thailand continued to welcome an influx of Chinese visitors. For some reason, these tourists did not set off exponential local transmission.
And when countries do all the wrong things and still end up seemingly not as battered by the virus as one would expect, go figure.
"In Indonesia, we have a health minister who believes you can pray away [the virus], and we have too little testing," said Dr. Pandu Riono, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Indonesia. "But we are lucky we have so many islands in our country that limit travel and maybe infection.
"There's nothing else we're doing right," he added.

M.N.: Explanation, again: Coronavirus from this German "Patient 1" sample traveled most likely, from Munich to Wuhan, and not the other way around. Or these were two independent cases with two different, unrelated to each other by origin, viruses.

"Pass the salt", but the other way around: from Germany to China! (Or vice versa!) - Was coronavirus spreading in Europe last year? - Google Search

On Tuesday, 5 May, Britains chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, told MPs that genome sequencing suggests that the UK got many of its coronavirus cases from Europe, rather than China.
"One of the things that it looks like, very clearly, is that early in March the UK got many, many different imports of virus from many different places," he said.
"And those places were particularly from European countries with outbreaks.
"And so we see a big influx of cases, probably from Italy and Spain, looking at the genomics of the virus in early March, seeded right the way across the country, and so whether that was people returning from half-term, whether it's business travellers or not we don't know, but a lot of the cases in the UK didn't come from China and didn't come from the places you might have expected.
"They actually came from European imports and the high level of travel into the UK around that time."
Questions have been raised about a Champions League match with Atletico Madrid in Liverpool in March and whether it increased the spread of coronavirus in the city.
Liverpool and the greater region have suffered disproportionately from coronavirus.
On 11 March, 3,000 fans travelled from Madrid for the clash with Liverpool, at a time when they were not permitted to watch their own team play at home, as all La Liga matches were ordered to be played behind closed doors, without fans present.

According to Alessandro Vespignani, a professor at Northeastern University in Boston, the novel coronavirus was already circulating in major US cities in January.

The version of the coronavirus now gripping the UK and Europe is more infectious  than the one that triggered the pandemic in China, according to scientists.

PUBLISHED: 14:53 EDT, 5 May 2020 | UPDATED: 02:25 EDT, 6 May 2020

Believed to have originated in China or Europe the version of the virus, dubbed G614, is now 'the dominant pandemic form in many countries', the scientists said.
They said it was first found in Germany in February and had since become the most common form of the virus in patients worldwide - it appears to force out the older version whenever they clash.

The newer strain named G614 (blue) appeared later on in the pandemic but, since then, has dominated the older, slower-spreading strain D614 (orange) in most areas of the world. It was the only one recorded in England but all the patients sampled were taken from one city - Sheffield

M.N.: My interpretation of this phenomenon. (I hypothesized it earlier, before this study, which appears to confirm it).

The Epidemic in China was introduced first (either by the Germans - the New Abwehr, or by the Russian GRU, or both, which is most likely) as the cover and the diversion: to create the element of confusion and to make the true detection and understanding more difficult, in order to give the pandemic more time to develop and to spread around.

After the Epidemic developed in Wuhan, Germany evacuated 150 of its citizens, on a special military plane; and Russia evacuated 600, most of whom, very likely, were their agents, who possibly started the Epidemic there. The effects of the strict surveillance in China and South Korea can be explained not by the "social distancing" and tracing the cases so much, as by the putting the stop to the intentional criminal spread, by whatever means it was done.

Furthermore, the patterns of the new cases in China and South Korea appear to be very different from the rest of the world, as it was described in the previous post. I named this pattern as the "Preliminary Wave".

Note the February 14-16 spikes on China, and March 1 on South Korea graphs. I call them the Valentine  and the Ides of March greeting cards. They probably were the messages, predicting the future Pandemic.

The real Epidemics, from Europe, with G614 strain followed soon, most likely via air travel from the Oktoberfest and the other "Karnevals".

It looks like these are the different illnesses, with practically the different pathogens and different clinical picture, more severe and more transmissible in the case of G614 (the "European") strain.

This also poses the questions about the validity and usefulness of the antigen tests if they were based on the Chinese samples.

The preponderance of this strain in Italy indicates that it was imported more easily and more readily from Germany.

A certain skepticism regarding the B. Korber's - Los Alamos study were expressed.

Military World Games in Wuhan in focus: We are all sick

Matteo Tagliariol on the World Military Games in Wuhan

Fencing Olympic champion Matteo Tagliariol already suspects the military world games held in Wuhan, China last October, as a hotspot of the corona pandemic. When we arrived in Wuhan, we were all sick. All six people in my apartment were sick, including many athletes from other delegations, the 37-year-old Italian told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.
The Military World Games were held in Wuhan from October 18-27, 2019. The first case of infection was officially reported in China in December. However, there is speculation that the coronavirus has already spread.
I had a severe cough, many other athletes had a fever, said Tagliariol, who won gold in epee fencing in Beijing in 2008. The worst awaited him when he returned to Italy.
I had a very high fever and could not breathe. Antibiotics did not help either. I was sick and very weak for three weeks. Then my two-year-old son Leo fell ill. He coughed for three weeks. My partner also got sick, but in When I started talking about the virus, I thought: I was infected. I recognized the symptoms of COVID 19. I am an athlete, I was very bad for my standards, said Tagliariol.
Almost 10,000 athletes from more than 140 countries had participated in the Military World Games in Wuhan, from Germany there were 243 athletes. More than 230,000 volunteers were involved in the competitions.
According to LEquipe, French pentathlete Elodie Clouvel and Valentin Belaud are also likely to have been infected at the Wuhan games. The World Military Games have been held every four years by the Military World Sports Association since 1995, modeled on the Olympic Games in summer and every four years in winter since 2010. The Summer Games always take place one year before the Summer Olympics, the Winter Games are held in the same year.

"Third, with modern biotechnology it becomes possible to create completely new biological weapons. And for technical and/or moral reasons, they might be more likely to be used than classical biowarfare agents. These possibilities have generated new military desires around the world, including within those countries that have publicly renounced biological weapons in the past. This paper deals predominantly with the last two factors, and with the use of real-life examples, we shall discuss the possibilities for such military abuse of biotechnology."

Saved Stories - Blogs: Genetic Study Shows COVID-19 Was in France Weeks Before The First Case Was Reported
Thu, 07 May 2020 14:55:53 -0400
Michael_Novakhov shared this story from ScienceAlert - Latest.

China reported its first cases of the new coronavirus in December. But was COVID-19 already silently circulating? To find out scientists are looking for "patient zeros" by tracking the evolution of the virus itself.
This genetic detective work is tracing the family tree of the coronavirus that has killed tens of thousands in its relentless spread across the planet.
It could also help find out if the virus was spreading in other countries before the first infections were officially recorded.
In France, a cluster of cases was discovered in late January.
But a new study published in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents has suggested the virus was already in the country a month earlier.
A retrospective analysis of samples taken from 14 intensive care patients with influenza-like symptoms at the Avicenne and Jean-Verdier hospitals in Paris found one positive COVID-19 case - a 42-year-old French resident who had not visited China. He was hospitalised on December 27.
Olivier Bouchaud, head of the infectious diseases department at Avicenne said at first the virus spreads "quietly in the population, without anyone detecting its presence".
So evidence of earlier infections would only confirm what many scientists had suspected, he told AFP.
It might also help explain cases like that of Aicha, a 57-year-old medical secretary who was hospitalised in Marseille in mid-January with severe respiratory symptoms.
At the time the mysterious outbreak of pneumonia cases in the Chinese city of Wuhan was still seen as a faraway problem.
France did not have a single case and the World Health Organization was still weeks away from giving it the name COVID-19.
Aicha's husband Jacques, a doctor, said she had "all the clinical signs" of the disease, including loss of taste and smell. But her tests have been inconclusive.
Other countries are discovering they may have had earlier infections. In the United States, autopsies performed on suspicious deaths in California have revealed infections before the first official case on January 21.
But Samuel Alizon, of the French National Centre for Scientific Research at Montpellier University, has cautioned that it is important to distinguish between isolated cases and the origin of the "epidemic wave".

China origins

In China, Wuhan health authorities have spoken of an initial case on December 8.
A study published in The Lancet in January said the first patient identified in the city started showing symptoms on December 1.
The timeline has been roughly corroborated by research mapping out the genetic evolution of the virus.
So far the genomes of more than 15,000 samples of the new coronavirus have been sequenced. As it replicates it produces multiple mutations, although none has been found to change its virulence.
Alizon said that about twice a month a mutation happens that stays in the genetic sequence, giving researchers a trail to follow.
So "if you compare two viruses, you can count how many mutations separate them," he said. Following the chain we find the "ancestor common to all infections".
Using publicly shared genome sequences, Andrew Rambaut of the University of Edinburgh found that the "lack of diversity is indicative of a relatively recent common ancestor for all these viruses".
He estimated that this ancestor could have emerged around November 17 last year (with a range of uncertainty between August 27 and December 29).
Imperial College London, in collaboration with the WHO, has also traced the virus' family tree, estimating that it appeared in China on December 5 (with a margin of uncertainty between November 6 and December 13).
Erik Volz, an epidemiologist at Imperial College, said all of the very earliest genetic sequences of the virus collected in Wuhan in December and January "have almost identical genomes".
"And all viruses currently circulating elsewhere in the world are descended from these closely related lineages in Wuhan," he told AFP.
But experts do not think of an epidemic as having a single starting point in time, he added: rather, they are seeded "multiple times from multiple points of origin".
He said estimates of the dates of these "seeding events" suggests the epidemics in many European and North American cities began in mid-January or early February.

'We will never know'

Italian research suggests the virus arrived in Lombardy between the second half of January and the beginning of February - weeks before the first infections were confirmed on February 20.
Football players for Inter Milan have said they suffered symptoms of the virus at the beginning of the year. Could they have had it?
"We had a week off in December and then we went back to work and I swear that 23 out of 25 players were sick," Belgian Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku said in a recent radio interview.
The players were not tested for the virus at the time.
Even if they took serological tests now and antibodies were found in their blood, it would not confirm when they were infected.
"We will never know," said Lukaku.

Saved Stories - Blogs: Poor methods weakened FBI investigation of 2001 anthrax attacks, report concludes | Science
Thu, 07 May 2020 14:55:37 -0400
Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

FBIs investigation of the 2001 anthrax letter attacks that killed five people in the United States was marred by weak scientific practices and analytical gaps, a report by Congresss watchdog agency has concluded. The findings, released 19 December, mirror those reached by a similar study conducted in 2011 by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).
In 2008, FBI concluded that microbiologist Bruce Ivins, who worked for a U.S. Army research laboratory in Maryland, was responsible for the letter attacks. Ivins committed suicide shortly before the FBI released its findings. But the governments case was largely circumstantial and rested in part on genetic analyses of anthrax spores used in the attacks and in Ivinss laboratory.
The 2011 NAS review concluded that the science behind the investigation could not rule out the possibility that someone other than Ivins committed the crime. Last weeks study, from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), comes to a similar conclusion. In particular, GAO found that contractors hired by FBI to test and evaluate the anthrax spores relied on poorly designed sampling and statistical methods. [T]he FBI lacked a comprehensive approachor frameworkthat could have ensured standardization of the testing process, the report states. As a result, each of the contractors developed their tests differently, and one contractor did not conduct verification testing, a key step in determining whether a test will meet a user's requirements, such as for sensitivity or accuracy.
FBI also failed to conduct research to provide a full understanding of the methods and conditions that give rise to genetic mutations used to differentiate between samples of B. anthracis, the report states. Similarities between the strains used in Ivinss laboratory and in at least four attack letters were a key element in FBIs case, but a failure to understand how the bacteria mutate over time could complicate efforts to compare samples. Several government agencies are now sponsoring research aimed at filling this gap, and FBI has taken steps to improve its scientific practices, the report notes.
FBI needed better science and measurement in order to be more conclusive, GAOs chief scientist, Timothy Persons, told The New York Times. It sounds nitpicky, but thats important in building up the scientific evidence for an important case.
The GAO report confirms what I have often saidthat the F.B.I.s definitive conclusions about the accuracy of their scientific findings in the Amerithrax case are not, in fact, definitive, Representative Rush Holt (DNJ), who requested the report in 2010, told the Times. (Holt is retiring this month from Congress and in February will become the CEO of AAAS, publisher of ScienceInsider.)
GAO was careful to note, however, that it did not review and is not taking a position on the conclusions the FBI reached when it closed its investigation in 2010.

Saved Stories - Blogs: New evidence on French COVID-19 patient suggests virus may not have started in China
Thu, 07 May 2020 14:55:21 -0400
Michael_Novakhov shared this story from 7NEWS.com.au.

Theres new evidence that the first case of coronavirus may not have started in China at all.
Doctors at a Paris hospital say theyve found evidence that an ill patient admitted in December was already infected with COVID-19, with no known association or recent travel to China.
Watch the video above
Speaking to The Latest on Wednesday, Associate Professor Sanjaya Senanayake, an infectious diseases expert at the Australian National University, said the patient had the illness a month before the first case was confirmed in Wuhan.
In this particular case, scientists looked at people who (had tested) negative for flu, but they never had an answer for why they had an infection, he said.
They found that this particular man had COVID-19 - this was in late December.
Theyve questioned him and he had no obvious associations with travel to or from China, or close associations with China.
This suggests that COVID-19 might have been around for longer than we think.

Wuhan wet markets

The French case may put paid to the popularly held theory that coronavirus originated in the wet markets of Wuhan.
Even the cluster in Wuhan wet market that we all know about, that may not have been the start of the outbreak, Associate Professor Senanayake said.
That may have been when the outbreak and the virus announced itself to the world, but it may have been circulating for a little bit longer.
COVID-19 might have been around for longer than we think.
The finding would also show that the virus was already circulating in Europe well before the first known cases were diagnosed in France or hotspot Italy.
COVID-19 was already spreading in France in late December 2019, a month before the official first cases in the country, the team at Groupe Hospitalier Paris Seine in Saint-Denis wrote in a study published Sunday in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents.
The first official reports of COVID-19 in France were on January 24 of this year, in two patients who had a history of travel to Wuhan, China.
But the French team looked at people admitted to the hospital with flu-like illness between December 2 and January 16 who were not ultimately diagnosed with influenza.

Trip to Algeria

They tested frozen samples from those patients for coronavirus.
One sample was taken from a 42-year-old man born in Algeria, who lived in France for many years, and worked as a fishmonger, the team wrote.
His last trip was in Algeria during August 2019.
More on 7NEWS.com.au
The researchers said identifying the first infected patient could change what we know about the origins of the virus.
Identifying the first infected patient is of great epidemiological interest as it changes dramatically our knowledge regarding SARS-COV-2 and its spreading in (France), they wrote.
Moreover, the absence of a link with China and the lack of recent travel suggests that the disease was already spreading among the French population at the end of December 2019.
Europe did not start reporting cases of coronavirus until January.
In Italy, the European country hit hardest by the virus, the first two cases were reported on January 31, in two Chinese tourists in Rome.
The first known community transmission was recorded at the end of February in Codogno, northern Italy.
